Background Information
SIR THOMAS MORE

Sir Thomas More (1478 - 1535) was an outstanding public figure
in England during the reign of Henry VIII in Tudor England. He is
best known by students of literature as the author of Utopia, but he
is also known as a great diplomat of Henry VIII's court to history
students. Being a martyred hero and saint for refusing to acknowledge Henry VIII as the rightful head of the Church of England as well as his annulment to Catharine of Aragon, More is also a well-known figure to Roman Catholics. His parents were Sir John More and Agnes Granger, a relatively prosperous family in London. His father was a lawyer who rose to

Nay, tempt me not to love again:
There was a time when love was sweet;
Dear Nea! had I known thee then,
Our souls had not been slow to meet!
But oh! this weary heart hath run So many a time the rounds of pain, Not even for thee, thou lovely one! Would I endure such pangs again.

Why dost thou gaze upon the sky? O that I were yon spangled sphere! Then every star should be an eye, To wander o'er thy beauties here.

This hath not offended the king.

They wonder much to hear that gold, which in itself is so useless a thing, should be everywhere so much esteemed, that even men for whom it was made, and by whom it has its value, should yet be thought of less value than it is.

He received a Latin education in the household of Cardinal Morton and at Oxford. Through his contact with the new learning and his friendships with Colet Lyly , and Erasmus , More became an ardent humanist. As a successful London lawyer, he attracted the attention of Henry VIII , served him on diplomatic missions, entered the king's service in 1518, and was knighted in 1521. More held important government offices and, despite his disapproval of Henry's divorce from Katharine of AragOn , he was made lord chancellor at the fall of Wolsey (1529). He resigned in 1532 because of ill health and probably because of increasing disagreement with Henry's policies. Because of his refusal to subscribe to the Act of Supremacy, which impugned the pope's authority and made Henry the head of the English Church, he was imprisoned (1534) in the Tower and finally beheaded on a charge of treason. A man of noble character and deep, resolute religious conviction, More had great personal charm, unfailing good humor, piercing wit, and a fearlessness that enabled him to jest even on the scaffold. Thomas More was born in Milk Street, London, on February 7 of either 1477 or 1478. His parents were John and Agnes More. His father was a lawyer who desired for Thomas to follow in his footsteps. According to Peter Ackroyd, “Thomas More’s birth was noted by his father upon a blank page at the back of Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae; for a lawyer John More was remarkably inexact in his references to that natal year, and the date has been moved from 1477 to 1478 and back again” (6).
Thomas was sent to school at St. Anthony’s. Ackroyd tells that, at this school on Threadneedle Street, lessons began so early in the morning that Thomas needed to take a candle with him during the winter (17). Classes began at 6:00 am, and he was probably seven when he
began attending classes. St. Anthony’s had a reputation for being one of the best schools available and had the added plus of being free. Parents did not have to pay fees for their children to attend. The primary purpose of St. Anthony’s was to teach young boys Latin grammar. According to Ackroyd, Thomas attended St. Anthony’s for about five years (24).

    History of St Thomas More
More, Sir Thomas (1478-1535) More is best known for Utopia (1516), a satirical account of life on the fictitious island of Utopia. On this island the interests of the individual are subordinate to those of society at large, all people must do some work, universal education and religious toleration are practiced, and all land is owned in common. These conditions are contrasted with those of English society, to the substantial disadvantage of the latter. Utopia was the forerunner of a series of similar books. Among the best-known of these are Candide by the French author and philosopher Voltaire, Erewhon by the English novelist Samuel Butler, and A Dream of John Ball by the English poet and artist William Morris. Thomas More (c. 1478-1535)
    Brief Biography
Sir Thomas More (Born in London February 7, 1478; executed at the Tower of London, July 6, 1535) was Lord Chancellor of England under King Henry VIII and had a European reputation as a humanist author. His most famous work was the Utopia in which he created an imaginary island-kingdom in which some modern scholars have seen an idealized opposite of More's contemporary Europe and in which other modern scholars have seen a wicked satire of the same Europe. Desiderius Erasmus dedicated his The Praise of Folly to More - the word "folly" is moria in Greek . More was attached to Henry's court by 1520 and knighted in 1521.
Thomas Cardinal Wolsey, Archbishop of York, failed to bring about the divorce and annulment Henry had sought, and was forced to resign in 1529. More was appointed in his place, Henry evidently not realizing More's resistance to the matter. Being well-educated in canon law as well as deeply religious, More knew that the annulment of sacramental marriage was a case resolved to the Papacy, and the position of Pope Clement VII was clearly set against the divorce.
Henry's reaction was to put himself in charge of the church in England. Only the clergy was required to take the intial Oath of Supremacy? declaring the sovereign to be the head of the church. More as a layman would not have been subject to this oath; however, he resigned his chancellorship in 1532 rather than serve the regime.
