Sir Thomas More (1478-1535), Patron Saint of Politicians by Sylvia Lacoski. From THE REFORMER, March/April 2001 The Protestant Alliance, 77 Ampthill Rd., Flitwick, Bedford, MK45 1BD, England angelfire.com/ky/dodone When Thomas More and Bishop John Fisher were canonized (a declaration by a pope that a person is in Heaven and worthy of veneration) in 1935, the British press filled their columns with superstitious accounts of the lives of these men. Similarly, last year, when it was made known that the present Pope, John Paul II , was to make Thomas More "patron saint of politicians" it was given considerable coverage in the press, and of course, by the BBC! John Gummer, former Anglican who went over to Rome, was delighted and was reported as saying he could not think of any section of the community which needed one more, while the TIMES of 4th November 2000 gave a glowing report of the Rev. Cormac Murphy O'Connor, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, and his plans to attend the ceremony along with twenty-five (misguided) Members of Parliament. Letters too appeared in the press, not all favourable. One "learned" doctor of Magdalene College Cambridge, excused More's persecution of Protestants at his house at Chelsea as

    Authors:
Anthony Munday wrote the original script of Sir Thomas More between 1592 and 1595. However, the master of revels (censor) at that time prevented its performance because scenes showing Londoners rioting might set a bad example. Years before, in 1559, Queen Elizabeth I had issued orders banning the presentation of plays which, in the opinion of government authorities, disparaged the established religion (the Church of England) or the government. Other writers later revised the play, making it less politically provocative. Among those writers, according to strong evidence, was William Shakespeare.

This page, prepared by John F. Tinkler, is intended as a (growing) collection of links to Renaissance texts (and related resources), with a special emphasis on the English literature of the period. It is intended as an aid for my courses in Renaissance Literature in the English Department at Towson State University. The Continental Renaissance is here treated (very approximately) as stretching ca. 1300-1600, that is, beginning around Petrarch and ending around the death of Montaigne. The English Renaissance is treated as beginning with the period of Thomas More and John Colet, and ending around the generation of Miltonthat is, ca. 1500 to the mid 1600s. There are several major lists of links to English Renaissance texts: The most important is the collection of AUTHORS, WORKS, PROJECTS on the RENAISSANCE PAGE in the English section of Voice of the Shuttle. The most beautiful is the Homepage of Luminarium , which now combines collections of materials relating to the Middle Ages, sixteenth century, and early seventeenth century. This is a superb multimedia resource that attempts to give the browser a real feel for the historical context of the period's literature, complete with Background Information , and links to pictures A less visually impressive resource, but still very valuable, is the bookshelf of

  • Notes.
Introduction:- Bacon's real claim to fame is: not that he, as the lord chancellor, in 1621, was removed from office for accepting a litigant's bribe; nor, that he was the real writer of the Shakespearean plays (one of the controversies in English literature, the "Baconian controversy") ; but rather Francis Bacon is known as a philosopher, one of the first order. Bacon delineated the principles of the inductive method, which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science, even though philosophers and scientists of the day, - and seemingly today, yet - repudiated both his theories and methodology, alike. Bacon argued that the only knowledge of importance to man was empirically rooted in the natural world; and that a clear system of scientific inquiry would assure man's mastery over the world. He was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power." He was quite taken up by the "materialist" theories and the resultant discoveries of both Copernicus and Galileo . Bacon, along with Galileo are known in the literature as "the great anti-Aristotelians who created the 'modern scientific' view of Nature."
