No family can claim to have had a greater impact on local history. The better known family members include, John 1763-1799, President of "The Provisional Republic of Connaught", George Henry, 1811-1870, an avid promoter of the Tenant Right Movement. George, 1852-1933,a founder of the Abbey Theatre and a prominent novelist of his time.
Amid its rich history visitors to Moore Hall will learn how the outcome of a horse race in 1846 saved the lives of many local tenants.
Sadly Moore Hall was badly damaged by fire in 1923.
On a more positive note the restoration is the subject of a proposal presently with the Irish government and a positive outcome is expected.

Moore Family Name Origins Moore
Of the many Moores who have distinguished themselves in various phases of Irish life the most famous was, perhaps, Thomas Moore (1779-1852), the poet: he was of a Co. Wexford family. The Moores of Moore Hall, Co. Mayo, produced George Henry Moore (1810-1870), the politician, and his two sons George Moore (1852-1933) the novelist, and Col. Maurice Moore (1854-1939), author and ardent worker in the Nationalist cause in the present century. The Moores of Moore Hall descend from the Moores of Alicante, Spain, who were English in origin
The family name of the Earls of Drogheda is Moore: their ancestor came to Ireland under Queen Elizabeth I. The Moores of Barmeath have been settled there since the fourteenth century.

In 1795 Sir Charles Bingham , became first Earl of Lucan. One of his successors, the third Earl, Sir George Charles Bingham,(1800-88) whose portrait is shown here, was known as "The Famine Earl" because of harsh treatment of his tenants, including numerous evictions during the Famine. His son George, the fourth Earl was a more compassionate landlord and presented "The Mall", formerly the Lucan's cricket pitch, to the people of Castlebar. The seventh Earl, Richard John, achieved notoriety in 1974 when he disappeared after the murder of his family nanny. Lord Lucan , photo of painting,Wynne Collection.
