John Moody (1868—1958) laid the foundations for Moody's® Investors Service in 1900, when he published Moody's® Manual of Industrial and Corporation Securities. In 1909, Moody introduced the first bond ratings as part of Moody's® Analysis of the Railroad Investments. He used the Aaa-through-C symbols that have since become a world standard to rate some 1,500 individual securities. From the very beginning, Moody assigned independent rating opinions to help his investor readers manage credit risk. Then–as now–Moody's® ratings were based on public information and assigned without the request of issuers. Mergent Company Data and International Company Data blend an expansive database containing information on over 25,000 companies worldwide. Company Data Direct offers Internet access to U.S. public company information on more than 10,000 companies (including EDGAR® (SEC) filings) via the FISonline website. In 1776, 13 British colonies on the eastern seaboard of northern America declared their independence from Great Britain, joining in a "perpetual confederation of independent states, to be known as the United States of America". After Great Britain, by the Treaty of Paris of 1783, had recognised the independence of the new state, a federal constitution was adopted and a central government was established in 1789. (1) (1) The thirteen colonies which declared their independence in 1776 were : Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia With the exception of North Carolina and Rhode Island - who only did so later - they all ratified the federal constitution before its coming in to effect in 1789. In the course of the following years new states - carved out of territories or annexed to the U.S. after 1776 - were added to the Union.
