L.M. Montgomery (1874-1942), one of Canada's most famous authors, is the subject of a virtual exhibit entitled "Picturing a Canadian Life: L.M. Montgomery's Personal Scrapbooks and Book Covers" that will be online from August 30, 2002, through August 2007 at http://lmm.confederationcentre.com and http://www.virtualmuseum.ca. This virtual exhibit, created in partnership with the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC), is the first online exhibit hosted by the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. Everyone is invited to go to http://lmm.confederationcentre.com on August 30, at noon (Atlantic daylight time) to view the exhibit and a live webcast of the launch. Internationally-renowned Montgomery scholar Dr. Elizabeth Rollins Epperly, curator of the exhibition, wrote a 40,000-word script that accompanies almost 800 images from Montgomery's personal scrapbooks and book covers, many of which have never before been seen by the public. Video and interactive components on the site help viewers to explore how Montgomery used her imagination to collect, create, and inspire images of Canadian life. By drawing on five archival and museum collections, the exhibit is significant in terms of size and content.

Montgomery, Lucy Maud Biography
Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) Canadian writer, who became famous for her juvenile books, especially ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (1908) with its six sequels. The main character is a spirited, orphan girl, who finds a home with an elderly brother and sister. Montgomery produced more than 20 novels and other books. Anne of Green Gables was rejected by several publishers. She was 34 when it was finally accepted. "I'm pretty hungry this morning," she announced, as she slipped into the chair Marilla placed for her. "The world doesn't seem such a howling wilderness as it did last night. I'm so glad it's a sunshiny morning. But I like rainy mornings real well too. All sorts of mornings are interesting, don't you think? You don't know what's going to happen through the day, and there's so much scope for imagination." (from Anne of Green Gables Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton (now New London), Prince Edward Island. When she was two, her mother died of tuberculosis. Her father, who was a merchant, remarried, and moved away. Montgomery was raised by her maternal grandparents in Cavendish. The place was isolated and her childhood was not particularly happy: she grew up in an atmosphere of strict discipline and punishment for the slightest reason. She joined her father briefly in Prince Albert, but then returned to Prince Edward Island. At an early age Montgomery read widely. She started to write in school and had her first poem published in a local paper at the age of fifteen. In 1895 Montgomery qualified for a teacher's licence at Prince Wales College, Charlottetown. During the 1890s she worked as a teacher in Bideford and at Lower Bedeque, both on Prince Edward Island.

Review by Deborah Mervold. excerpt:
If her novels contain hidden rebellion, her journals pulse with open resistance, resentment, and depression at the structures of daily life that caught her ambition in cobwebs. She felt trapped in her marriage, confined by motherhood, and bound by the need to present a smiling face of domestic happiness in accord with the romantic novels she was producing. She was fettered by her own popularity and by the need to maintain her success in order to supplement her husband's income as a poorly paid country parson. And she was caught, perhaps unawares, in another trap; her own facility in creating narratives. To keep her secret journal going, she unconsciously adapted her life to her narrative skill. Gradually she began to make life-choices shaped to fit the kind of story she was prepared to tell in that journal.
So Montgomery's gift for storytelling both twisted and reinforced the tangled threads of her life. She never undervalued that gift; it helped her endure considerable trials, which she was then able to convert into amusing anecdotes and engaging plots. For her writing was a refuge, a solace, and a joy. . . . Her words have brought pleasure to many, for through them Montgomery created a circle of friends, a ring of laughter, and a sense of place.

Literary landmarks-Prince Edward Island-Guidebooks. Grades 4 and up / Ages 9 and up. Review by Lisa Doucet. excerpt:
"What visitors seek and find at Green Gables is a smooth blend of reality and fiction; in fact the melding of the two elements is so seamless that many people still regard Anne as a real person, even after a thorough explanation of how the Green Gables house in Cavendish really belonged to Montgomery's relatives, David Jr. and Margaret Macneill, cousins of the author's grandfather, and served only as a model for the home of the fictional sister and brother, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, of make-believe Avonlea. In the end, the long-standing confusion between fact and fantasy is high tribute to the author." In this latest offering in the realm of literature that celebrates the adored creator of Anne of Green Gables The photographs used in this book are lovely and well-chosen to complement the text. The combination of old and new photos perfectly suits the book and its purpose and are again most appropriate in light of Maud's own passion for photography. They also help the reader to cope with the overly-precise descriptions. Unfortunately, I was annoyed with the layout and design on several occasions where the division between photographs was unclear. For example, page 26 seems to suggest, at a glance, that Marilla's dresser was photographed floating at the top of her bedroom window. Also, there are several instances where the text of the book, itself, flows right into the explanatory text accompanying the photographs. These design issues could have, and should have, been better addressed. Improved editing is also in order since there are numerous significant spelling errors and/or missing words or letters.

- Book Reviews, by L. M. Montgomery, Mary Rubio (Editor), Elizabeth Waterston (Editor), Elizabeth Waterson (Editor) From the Publisher
This eagerly anticipated third volume of Lucy Maud Montgomery's journals covers the period 1921 to 1929. In the 1920's, Montgomery is in mature mid-life, and her personal and professional lives are becoming even more complex. Montgomery juggles the demands of motherhood, parish obligations, indifferent household help, grief at the loss of older friends and family, appeals by her PEI clan for advice and assistance-everyday struggles to balance a woman's social and domestic duties.
