Search all of Lucy Maud Montgomery Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) , Canadian writer, who became famous for her children's classics, especially for Anne Of Green Gables (1908) with its seven sequels. The main character is a spirited orphan girl, who finds a home with an elderly brother and sister. Montgomery produced more than 20 novels and short-story collections.
L.M. Montgomery was born on November 30, 1874, at Clifton (now New London), Prince Edward Island. When she was two, her mother died. Her father, who was a merchant, remarried, moved away, and she was raised by her maternal grandparents in Cavendish. At an early age Montgomery read widely. She started to write in school and had her first poem published in a local paper at the age of fifteen. During the 1890s she worked as a teacher in Bideford and at Lower Bedeque, both on Prince Edward Island.
In 1895-96 Montgomery studied literature at Dalhousie University, Halifax. In 1911 she married Ewan MacDonald, the Presbyterian minister, and moved with him to rural Ontario.

22. Picturing A Canadian Life: L.M. Montgomery's Personal Scrapbooks And Book Covers
This exhibition invites you to explore LM Montgomery s life (18741942) and visualimagination through a sample of her personal scrapbook pages and book covers
http://lmm.confederationcentre.com/english/welcome.html
This exhibition invites you to explore L.M. Montgomery's life (1874-1942) and visual imagination through a sample of her personal scrapbook pages and book covers, found in five Canadian archival and museum collections. For the first time, viewers may see in one place a sample of the images Montgomery collected, created, and inspired, including souvenirs, photographs, and cover art.
Known best for Anne of Green Gables and the Emily books, Montgomery is a person of national historic significance and a hero of the Twentieth Century: gifted author, diarist, photographer, letter writer, keeper of scrapbooks, and newspaper woman.
Her public and private works show Canadian culture as she reflected and imagined it; the book covers suggest how some of her imaginings were interpreted and marketed. The images in this exhibition may give you special insight into the Canada Montgomery has made famous around the world.
Dr. Elizabeth Rollins Epperly, founder of the L.M. Montgomery Institute at UPEI, is the curator of this virtual exhibition, which will be available on the world wide Web from August 2002 until August 2007.

Overview of L.M. Montgomery's Life Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874-1942) was born in Clifton (now called New London), Prince Edward Island, daughter of Hugh John Montgomery and Clara Woolner Macneill. Her mother died of tuberculosis when Maud was just twenty-one months old, and her maternal grandparents took over her care at the Macneill homestead in Cavendish.
Maud graduated from Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown in 1894 and received a first-class teacher's licence. She taught school altogether for some three years and attended Dalhousie University in Halifax for one year. When her grandfather died in 1898 she returned to Cavendish to take care of her grandmother and to work in the post office with her. Apart from a ten-month stint as a newspaper reporter in Halifax (1901-1902), she stayed with her grandmother until Lucy Woolner Macneill died in 1911. In July of 1911 Maud Montgomery married Presbyterian minister Ewan Macdonald (see photographs above), to whom she had been secretly engaged for five years, and moved to Ontario. Her first novel, Anne of Green Gables (1908), was an immediate international success.

L. M. Montgomery is not known today for her poetry, though she published approximately 500 poems during her lifetime . The majority of these poems are devoted to nature; in particular, they capture the landscape of Prince Edward Island and rural life on the sea shore. Her contributions as a Canadian poet were noted in Canadian Poets edited by Garvin, John William, in 1916 (available online)
Montgomery's respect for poetry as a literary form is clearly noted in her early literary ambitions and in the literary ambitions of her created characters. For instance, Captain Jim may speak for Montgomery as he says: " There are times in spring when I sorter feel that I might have been a poet if I'd been caught young,"...."I catch myself conning over old lines and verses I heard the schoolmaster reciting sixty years ago. They don't trouble me at other times. Now I feel as if I had to get out on the rocks or the fields or the water and spout them." Furthermore, the references to poetry in Montgomery's works of fiction are substantial. In the Anne series alone, there are numbers of poems that are quoted and referred to, many of which are documented at the

L.M.MONTGOMERY
Canadian author (1874-1942)
Biography:
Lucy Maud Montgomery was born at Clifton, Prince Edward Island, on November 30, 1874. Montgomery always knew she wanted to be a writer. She had various poems and stories published, but her most famous work would undoubtedly be Anne of the Green Gables , published in 1908. Later on, she wrote 8 sequels to this book, taking Anne from childhood to motherhood.
She achieved much in her lifetime, putting Prince Edward Island and Canada on the world map. Nineteen of the novels were set on Prince Edward Island, describing its landscape and people.
She wrote short stories, poems and about 20 novels. However, the charming story of an unconventional red-headed orphan girl, called Anne Shirley and adopted by the old Cuthberts, will always be considered as one of the best Canadian literary production.
"Anne is the dearest and most moving and delightful child of fiction since the immortal Alice Mark Twain

L. M. Montgomery
Returning to teaching, Maud continued to write for publication, even rising early on cold mornings to work wrapped in a heavy coat. When her grandfather died in 1898, she returned to Cavendish to help her grandmother at home. Writing when time permitted, she was able to report in 1901 that she could now make a living by her pen. She worked from 1901 to 1902 on a Halifax newspaper but found that she could still produce fiction in spare moments in the office. Back in Cavendish, she kept up her household duties and writing along with regular diary entries and lengthy correspondence. 1. Always concerned with life on Prince Edward Island, Montgomery's books were published all over the world,
translated into several languages and adapted to stage and film. In all, seven sequels to Anne would be written as
well as an autobiographical Emily trilogy. Her legacy also includes hundreds of poems, many short stories, dozens
of books of fiction, and personal diaries 2. This photo of L. M.Montgomery was taken circa 1904-5 while she was writing Anne of Green Gables which was rejected by publishers five times before its publication in 1908 [University of Guelph]
In 1904 Montgomery began her first book. About a girl sent to an elderly couple who had applied to an orphanage for a boy, Anne of Green Gables was written with enthusiasm but put away with disappointment after five publishers' rejections. Another try succeeded, and Anne was published in 1908. It sold quickly and far beyond its anticipated audience of teenage girls. Older readers, men and women, responded to Montgomery's believable characters, lively plots, sense of humour, sensitivity to natural beauty, and message of an underlying goodness in life despite its darkness. Anne eventually was translated into many languages including Braille. Her author could record: "The dream dreamed years ago at that old brown desk in school has come true at last after years of toil and struggle."
