Moliere; "Le Tartuffe ou l'Imposteur"
Description of the Art Work
Tartuffe portrayed a pious crook so firmly established in a bourgeois household that the master promises him his daughter and disinherits his son. At the time it was common for directors of conscience to be placed in families to reprove and reform conduct. When this "holy" man is caught making love to his employer's wife, he recovers by masterly self reproach and persuades the master not only to pardon him but also to urge him to see as much of his wife as possible.
Description of incident
1664, France: "Le Tartuffe ou l'Imposteur" banned from the public stage by Louis XIV who, nevertheless, read it aloud to an audience which included high dignitaries of the Church. 1667: While the King was away in Flanders, the play was given as "The Impostor."
Results of incident
1664, France: The first three acts were given repeatedly at court, but Moliere could not get permission for a public performance. During these years the church called him "a demon in human flesh," closed his theater, and tore down his posters. 1667: The theater was ordered closed by the Chief of Police, and the Archbishop of Paris laid a ban of excommunication on all who might act in the play, read it, or see it. 1669: Permission was granted by the King to perform the play in public.

Study Guide to Moliere's Tartuffe
Be sure to read the excellent introduction to the play by the translator of our edition, Richard Wilbur. Molière (1622-1673) was a younger contemporary of Gianlorenzo Bernini (1598-1680), though as an actor and manager of a theatre company his social status hardly compared with that of the Roman architect. Yet Molière enjoyed the patronage of most powerful monarch in Europe during the 17th Century Louis XIV of France (1638-1715). Louis' reign was extraordinarily long, lasting from the death of his father (Louis XIII) in 1643 until his own in 1715, although between 1643 and 1661 direct responsibility for the conduct of government fell to his mother, Catherine de Medici, who delegated it in turn to Cardinal Mazarin. Molière first performed before the king in 1658, and continued with at least an annual hit until his death, which occurred during a performance of his The Imaginary Invalid , while he was playing the title role. His greatest comedies were produced during the high point of Louis' career as "Le Rey Soleil"

Molière (Jean-Baptiste Poquelin)
Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, best known as Molière, (Paris, France, 1622 - 1673), French theatre writer, director and actor, one of the masters of satire. The son of a Parisian artisan, Poquelin lost his mother when still a child and entered the prestigious Jesuits' Collège de Clermont, to complete his studies. It is said that his father was very hard to him, or that in this college he met the prince of Conti, or that he was a pupil of the philosopher Gassendi, but these statements appear to be not really more than unverified hypothesis. In reality, Poquelin was a close friend of the abbé La Mothe Le Vayer, the son of the famous philosopher, in the years in which the abbé was reordering his father's works, and this allows to presume that Poquelin could be somehow influenced by them.
Among his first works, he wrote a translation of De Rerum Natura by Lucretius , now lost. At the age of 18, his father left him the title of Tapissier du Roi , and the annexed charge of valet de chambre by which he could be in frequent contact with the king. Poquelin is supposed having graduated in law at Orléans in 1642 (but some doubts however remain). In June 1643, together with his lover Madeleine Béjart and a brother and a sister of her, he founded the

http://mkassmi.free.fr/biograph/m/moliere.htm
