Silas Weir Mitchell
American physician and author, born February 15, 1829, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; died January 4, 1914, Philadelphia.
Associated eponyms: Barraquer-Simons syndrome A rare childhood disease characterized by loss of subcutaneous fat from the face and trunk. Bernard-Horner syndrome (Claude Bernard) A syndrome mainly characterised by a trias of miosis, ptosis, and enophthalmos. Mitchell's rest cure Treatment for victims of nervous disorders, chiefly hysteria and neurasthenia. Mitchell's syndrome I An idiopathic paroxysmal vasodilation of peripheral vasculature marked by sudden onset of burning pain in the hands and feet, diminution of temperature sense, and occasional glossalgia and feeding difficulty. Biography: Silas Weir Mitchell was born in Philadelphia to a family of Scottish origin, the seventh physician in three generations. His father was John Kearsley Mitchell (1798-1858), a physician and lecturer at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia; his mother was Matilda Henry Mitchell (1800-1872). Weir Mitchell was accustomed to wealth and cultural pursuits, and was deeply religious. As a boy he was required to read a daily bible text and to attend church twice on Sundays where he wiled away his time reading novels such as «Midshipman Easy».When he first joined the University of Pennsylvania at the age of fifteen he had a poor record, preferring to play billiards, write poetry, and play truant rather than to deal with subjects such as mathematics, which he cordially disliked.

MOREHOUSE, M.D., AND WILLIAM W. KEEN, M.D. Silas Weir Mitchell (1829-1914) lived a long and productive life in Philadelphia, making his mark as a scientist, physician, and writer. A product of a medical family, seven physicians in three generations, he received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1850. Following graduation. he spent a year traveling and studying in Europe, where be attended the lectures of Claude Bernard. His early medical practice was scant, which allowed him time for his scientific experiments on snake venom, curare, and comparative physiology. Mitchell joined the army as a contract physician in 1862 and was assigned to a hospital in Philadelphia by his friend, William K Hammond, the Surgeon General.
In May 1863, Hammond set aside some wards in the U.S. Army Hospital. Christian Street, Philadelphia, for the treatment of diseases and injuries of the nervous system. This categorization and grouping or patients with similar problems in special hospitals greatly facilitated patient care and the study of their diseases. Mitchell and George R. Morehouse were assigned the care of patients on these wards. They were joined later by a young intern, W. W. Keen. One or the fruits of their work was a small volume
