SIX HUMANITIES SCHOLARS RECEIVE FEDERAL GRANTS TO EXAMINE HEALTH ISSUES
National Endowment for the Humanities and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services agency form partnership to promote healthcare studies WASHINGTON, February 12, 2001Six humanities scholars have received fellowships to study the relationship between the humanities and healthcare through a new partnership between the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the two agencies announced today. Five of the fellowships, of 9 to 12 months duration, are for $35,000. The sixth, 6 to 8 months long, is for $24,000. The stipends are provided through equal contributions from the two agencies. "Humanities scholars bring important perspectives to bear on health issues," said NEH Chairman William R. Ferris. "NEH's partnership with HHS's Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality will help place contemporary healthcare in a broad historical and philosophical context." "We are pleased to collaborate with the National Endowment for the Humanities to support these studies and future research at the intersection between the humanities and health," said John M. Eisenberg, M.D., AHRQ's director. "This research offers the essential cultural and historical context needed to understand the important role that health and healthcare play in our society, and also provides an important framework for the contributions to understanding ways to improve healthcare that are made by the health services research supported by AHRQ."

(1.5 linear feet) B C163.1 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract A key spokesman for the medical establishment against the antivivisection movement, Walter B. Cannon was head of the Council for the Defence of Medical Research of the American Medical Association from 1908 to 1936. He and his colleague William W. Keen monitored antivivisectionist activity, mobilized the medical profession, lobbied politicians, testified in public hearings, and wrote tirelessly in defense of animal experimentation. Cannon was George Higginson Professor of Physiology at Harvard Medical School and head of its physiology department. Keen was a prominent surgeon and neurologist from Philadelphia. The Cannon Papers consist of over 1.5 linear feet of correspondence, 1905-1928, primarily between Cannon (1871-1945) and Keen (1837-1932) regarding their mutual opposition to the antivivisection movement.

Jean Frederic Herbart and Education by Instruction
Book By Gabriel Compayre
Book Description: Jean Frederic Herbart (1776-1841) was at once a schoolmaster and a profound philosopher; and if it could be said of him that he was "the father of modern psychology," he has no less a claim to be considered the founder of a scientific pedagogy, with psychology as its basis. Gabriel Compayré is the author of History of Pedagogy, Montaigne and the Education of the Judgment, Peter Abelard and the Rise of the Modern Universities and Jean Jacques Rousseau and Education from Nature.
The American Revolution: A Continuing Commitment
Book By Library of Congress
Book Description: "This fifth symposium ... does not deal directly with the history of the Revolution but is rather in the nature of a stocktaking. What has the Revolution meant to America? Have we achieved our dreams or fallen short of them? What new problems face us as we - still a young nation in many ways but a world leader with heavy responsibilities - observe our Bicentennial...?" These questions - posed by Assistant Librarian of Congress Elizabeth Harner Kegen in her introductory remarks - and many like them were discussed in sessions held at the Library of Congress on May 6 and 7, 1976, under a grant from The Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation. Departing from the approach taken in organizing the four previous symposia in this series, the Library of Congress invited representatives from disciplines other than history to evaluate America today in the light of the events of 200 years ago.
