Alan Alexander Milne was born in London on January 18, 1882. He was the youngest of three brothers named, David Barret Milne and Kenneth John Milne. His father, John Vine, was a school teacher and his mother, Sarah Maria, was a homemaker. They married August 27, 1878. And to no surprise, Alan Alexander could read at the age of two. Alan Alexander first attended the Henley House, then at Westminster School, and then Cambridge on a mathematics scholarship. In 1903, Milne went to London to write. In 1906, he became the editor of Punch magazine. He continued on with this position for eight years. Within this time he wrote his first book; three collections of his contributions to the magazine were also published. In 1913 he married Dorothy deb Selincourt, known to friends as Daphne. In 1915, during World War I, he enlisted in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment and served in France. During his military service he wrote three plays, all of which were seen on the London stage.

45. A.A. Milne
AA Milne 18821956 The man whose fame now rests on a Bear of Very Little Brain was actually something of a literary man-about-town in postwar London.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/railway/age/milne_bio.html
The man whose fame now rests on a "Bear of Very Little Brain" was actually something of a literary man-about-town in postwar London. In 1919 A.A. Milne's play, Mr. Pim Passes By, was staged to great acclaim, redeeming the disastrous publication of his first novel 14 years earlier and solidifying his contemporary reputation. A pacifist who fought in France during World War I (and who published Peace with Honour, a denunciation of war, in 1934), Milne was characterized by contradiction in his literary output as well. His worldly plays and novels, which were encouraged by his teacher and friend H.G. Wells, met with success in their day, but their names register now not at all in relation to the name of the stout golden bear with the "hunny" pot who was inspired not by a great thinker like Wells but rather by a collection of stuffed animals in the nursery of Milne's son. Winnie-the-Pooh first appeared publicly in 1924, with Milne's publication of When We Were Very Young, a collection of children's verse that had already appeared in Punch

Seventy-five years ago, that most beloved of "silly old bears," Winnie-the-Pooh, came down the stairs, "bump, bump, bump," on the back of his head, behind Christopher Robin. And now, after generations of children have grown up on stories about Pooh's adventures with his forest friends, the four all-time children's classics from A.A. Milne and Ernest H. Shepard have been collected in one hefty, handsome volume for another multitude of generations to enjoy. Gathered together are the poems and tales that celebrate heffalumps, Eeyore's birthday, the unbouncing of Tigger, Disobedience, Buckingham Palace, and sneezles. The stories about Pooh getting stuck in Rabbit's doorway, Piglet doing a "Very Grand Thing," and Eeyore losing a tail (and Pooh finding one) are timeless favorites for childrenand grownupsof all ages. Four original classics are here, in all their glory: Winnie-the-Pooh The House at Pooh Corner When We Were Very Young , and Now We Are Six . This beautiful edition features complete, unabridged text and all of Shepard's original illustrations, each hand painted in watercolorsthis is a true collector's gem. (All ages)

http://www.rakkav.com/homeworlds/greendoor/pages/alan.htm
Who Was Alan Alexander Milne? A.A. Milne was much more than a children's author. The American Heritage Dictionary (1971 edition) describes him thus: " Milne...A(lan) A(lexander) , 1882-1956. English author of children's books, novels, plays and poems." Yet even this statement hardly summarizes the man or even the writer, for A.A. Milne won considerable fame and fortune long before he started writing the first of the "Pooh Books", the book of poems called When We Were Very Young
Alan Alexander Milne (b. January 18, 1882) was the son of John Vine (J.V.) Milne, a dedicated and talented schoolmaster, and Maria Milne, herself a highly competent and talented woman and dedicated Victorian mother. Alan had two brothers, David Barrett (the oldest, generally called Barry) and Kenneth John (Ken). Alan was the youngest (and most precocious) of the three. As he said of himself years later, "In Papa's house it was natural to be interested; it was easy to be clever." Later, Alan would attend classes in the school administered by his father, and be taught there by none other than H.G. Wells (who later wrote The War of the Worlds , among many other works).
