The History A.A. Milne
A.A Milne, the creator of Winnie the Pooh and his friends, was born Alan Alexander Milne in London on January 18, 1882. He was the youngest son of London schoolteachers, which is no surprise when he learned to read at 2. As a schoolboy, he wrote verses, parodies, and short humourous pieces for the school paper. Later, he went to Cambridge, where he edited the undergraduate paper. In 1903, he left school and went to London to write, and in 1906, he was offered a position at Punch Magazine, where he was the assistant editor for the next 8 years, during the time that he wrote his first book. He married Dorothy Daphne de Selincourt, god-daughter of Punch's editor, Owen Seaman, in 1913, and they moved to Chelsea, England. His play production in 1919, of Mr. Pim Passes By became a huge success, and on August 21, 1920, he had a son named Christopher Robin. Christopher Robin had many stuffed animals that all lived in the 100 Acre Woods, which Milne had based his stories on. He published When We Were Very Young (1924), a collection of verses illustrated by Ernest Shepard. Christopher Robin had an affection for a bear name Winnie at the London Zoo, which later inspired him to write children's books about Winnie and Christopher Robin's stuffed animals. Some titles of his children's books and verses include:

Alan Alexander Milne
Short biography
Milne, Alan Alexander (1882-1956), English author of a series of children's books that have become classics. Milne, who was born in London, was the author of several whimsical plays popular in the 1920s, including Mr. Pim Passes By (1919) and The Dover Road (1920), as well as a few novels of contemporary life and one detective story, The Red House Mystery (1922). He is best known, however, for the juvenile verses and stories he wrote for his son, Christopher Robin (1920- ). These delightful books include When We Were Very Young (1924), Winnie-the-Pooh (1926), Now We Are Six (1927), and The House at Pooh Corner (1928). Not only Christopher Robin himself, with his stuffed bear Winnie-the-Pooh and their constant companion Piglet, but also Kanga and Roo, Eeyore the donkey, the kittenish Tigger, Rabbit, and Owl—all the fanciful characters created by Milne—are beloved by both children and adults.
Extensive biography
Alan Alexander Milne was born January 18, 1882, the youngest of three sons to Sarah Marie and John Vine Milne. His father ran a school for young boys, Henley House, in which Alan, and his older brothers, David Barrett Milne (Barry) and Kenneth John Milne (Ken) grew up in. John Vine Milne was the eldest son of a Congressional minister and had served in many odd jobs before settling on teaching. He had been a clerk in the counting-house of a biscuit factory, apprenticed in an engineering firm, and was an usher in various schools before he finally earned his B.A. and became a school teacher. He married Sarah Maria Heginbotham on August 27, 1878. Alan was always close to his father, and more so to his brother Ken. en would remain Alan's closest friend up until his death in 1929.

~*~Alan Alexander Milne~*~ by Patricia Alan Alexander Milne was born in Hampstead, London, on January 18th, 1882 to John Vine and Sarah Maria Milne. His two older brothers were Ken and Barry. Alan was the youngest. Both his parents were school teachers, which was good for his academics as he enrolled in Henley House school in September, 1888. In 1893 he won a scholarship to Westminster where he joined his brother Ken. He then went to Trinity College, Cambridge in 1900. Whiled there he started writing when he became editor of "Granta," a magazine. Following that position, at age 24, he worked as editor assistant for the popular magazine "Punch." With an affirmative response from Daphne De Selincourt, Alan was wed, on June 24, 1913. However his happy love life, and wonderful job, had to stop with the start of World War I. He was sent to France in the Warwickshire Regiment. He was sent home after developing trench fever. Having his career cut right in the middle, he made a great recovery from the war and continued contributing to "Punch," and started writing plays. A popular debut came with "Mr. Pim Passes By." In August the birth of Alan's and Daphne's first and only son resulted in a move to Cotchford Farm, Hartfield, East Sussex, which is on the outskirts of Ashdown Forest. Alan continued writing, and wrote many famous books.

LIFE:

Alan Alexander Milne was born in London, the third son of a schoolmaster who ran his private school out of his own home. As a boy, he was close to his father and to his brother, Ken (his closest friend until Ken’s death in 1929), and appears to have been the favorite of his parents. He was aware of and seems to have experienced the privileged position third children are put into by fairy tales. Wullschlager describes his childhood as “idyllic,” unlike those of other children’s writers, and consequently Milne writes out of nostalgia for the actual past, rather than an idealized vision (177).
Milne won a scholarship to Westminster School at age 11, an unusually precocious accomplishment. His scholarship gave him access to the House of Commons terrace and exposed him to daily chapel services in the Poet’s Corner of Westminster Abbey ( SATA 178). He excelled at games and math and went on to study math at Cambridge
He wrote sketches for various magazines; his first book

"After a l l what a r e birthdays H e r e today and g o n e tomorrow." ~ A. A. Milne Writer Alan Alexander Milne (1882-1956) was born on this day in London, England and was the creator of Winnie-the-Pooh, the most famous bear in the world. Milne wrote Winnie-the-Pooh (1926) and The House at Pooh (1928), the charming tales of Pooh bear and his friends, Tigger (the original "Yahoo"), Piglet (a forever friend ), Rabbit (always rushing) and Eeyore (delightful Mr. Negative). Milne's words about life in the 100-acre woods, written for his son Christopher Robin, were brought to life by the line drawings of Ernest H. Shepard. Pooh is more popular today than ever before. Children ... and their parents... continue to be touched by the timeless wisdom and of the rich stories. The secret may be that as Milne wrote for his son, the tales revitalized his own boyhood memories and gave voice to the child in everyone. "A children's book ," he explained, "must be written, not for children , but for the author himself." "Nobody can be un-cheered with a balloon," said Pooh. Nobody can be un-cheered with Pooh.

"The Roaring Twenties"
As the world bid farewell to the 1910's, it was introduced to a decade that would be unlike any other. Separating two world wars, the 1920's followed events such as the sinking of the Titanic (1912), the invention of stainless steel (1913), and the completion of the Panama Canal (1914). The Roaring Twenties would have their own share of excitement and wonder as well - the Treaty of Versailles ended World War I, penicillin was discovered, and the Sultan of Swat hit 60 home runs. These events were and still are significant, but they reflect only a small portion of the full story.
