All I could see from where I stood
Was three long mountains and a wood;
I turned and looked another way,
And saw three islands in a bay.
So with my eyes I traced the line
Of the horizon, thin and fine,
Straight around till I was come
Back to where I'd started from;
And all I saw from where I stood
Was three long mountains and a wood.
Over these things I could not see; These were the things that bounded me; And I could touch them with my hand, Almost, I thought, from where I stand. And all at once things seemed so small My breath came short, and scarce at all. But, sure, the sky is big, I said; Miles and miles above my head; So here upon my back I'll lie And look my fill into the sky. And so I looked, and, after all, The sky was not so very tall. The sky, I said, must somewhere stop, And sure enough! I see the top! The sky, I thought, is not so grand; I 'most could touch it with my hand! And reaching up my hand to try

This is a poem that meant a lot to me long ago. I'm not sure why, but i think it influenced me and my writing.

Edna St. Vincent Millay
Edna St. Vincent Millay was born in Rockland, Maine, in 1892. When Edna was seven years old, her mother Cora asked Edna's father to leave. Cora was a nurse and always encouraged her daughters to pursue music and literature. Cora encouraged Edna to enter a poetry contest. In doing this, Edna won a scholarship to Vassar College after her poem "Renascence" won fourth place. She graduated from Vassar College in 1917, which is the same year Renascence and Other Poems was published. At one time, Edna was romantically involved with Wynne Matthison, a British actress. The two wrote passionate letters to each other. In one letter, Edna wrote, "You wrote me a beautiful letter,I wonder if you meant it to be as beautiful as it was.I think you did, for somehow I know that your feeling for me, however slight it is, is of the nature of love… When you tell me to come, I will come, by the next train, just as I am. This is not meekness, be assured; I do not come naturally be meekness; know that it is a proud surrender to you." Edna had many romantic relationships with women before her marriage to Eugen Boissevain in 1923. It is unknown if she continued to have relationships with women during her marriage. It is also unknown which of her poems were written about women and which were written about men. They were married all the way until Eugen's death in 1949.

Her mother, single and divorced, raised Edna and her sisters. Inheriting a tendency toward poetry and singing from her mother, she gained experience reciting poems on a table top at Kalloch Reunions. Her wonderful poetry is grounded in the Knox Co., Maine landscape and Edna returned often for the summer. In 1923 she became the first woman to be awarded a Pulitzer Prize, and in 1981 she was commemorated with a U.S. postage stamp See also: " About Edna St. Vincent Millay ", by Elinor Collemer Johnson, from the 1999 Kalloch Newsletter.

From The Publisher Thomas Hardy once said that America had two great attractions: the skyscraper and the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay. The most famous poet of the Jazz Age, Millay captivated the nation: She smoked in public, took many lovers (men and women, single and married), flouted convention sensationally, and became the embodiment of the New Woman. So quel che voglio e ho fatto la mia scelta;
nè a tradire. Vorrei che tu capissi
che nel mio più segreto desiderio sogno sempre il mio bacio; ma non chiesero di bere ancora quelli che languivano nei deserti del Sud; puoi benedirmi, ma non piegarmi dopo avermi amata.

It was followed by A Few Figs from Thistles Second April (1921), and The Ballad of the Harp Weaver (1922; Pulitzer Prize). She also was a member of the Provincetown Players , a group that produced several of her verse dramas, including Aria da Capo (1920) and Two Slatterns and a King In 1923 she married Eugen Jan Boissevain, a Dutch coffee importer, and moved to "Steepletop," a farm near Austerlitz, N.Y. Among her later volumes are Fatal Interview (1931), a superb sonnet cycle;

Return Edna St. Vincent Millay William Zorach's 1923 portrait of Edna St. Vincent Millay for Century magazine accompanied a laudatory article by Carl Van Doren on her poetry, which had just earned her the Pulitzer Prize. Zorach met Millay when both were working with the Provincetown Players in Greenwich Village. He depicts Millay's tiny frame and hands, her lovely features, and pensive, intelligent gaze. Through the subtly provocative opening of her loose jacket, he hints at her independent spirit and her charismatic personality. Others described her in similar terms—a pale, tiny girl with bright-red bobbed hair and sea-green eyes who dominated her surroundings.
One of the most widely read poets of her generation and an ardent feminist, Millay wrote of her adventures in poems published in 1920 as A Few Figs from Thistles . One of the verses for which Millay was most famous, " First Fig ," was in this collection: My candle burns at both ends;
It will not last the night
But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends—
