Thanks for your more detailed reply. I agree that in effect, history books in
all countries are written by the victors of past conflicts. As R. Coates points
out, "Only when lions have historians will hunters cease being heroes". However,
if all history books are written by the victors, it is noteworthy that God
marches with the strongest army. For example, the spread of Christianity and
Islam (the world's two largest religions) was accomplished not through
educational programs or reports of miracles but by wars of conquest. In
addition, religions also produce their own self-serving history books, written
by people known as theologians and apologists. PSN'rs might find the following recent events in religious history suggestive (from Hill and Cheadle's book): SOME RECENT HISTORICAL EVENTS INVOLVING RELIGION [] In June 1995, the Southern Baptist Convention formally apologized for its

Exposing the Second Amendment:
Federal Preemption of State Militia Legislation
J. NORMAN HEATH "Upon the subject of the militia. Congress has exercised the powers conferred on that body by the constitution, as fully as was thought right, and has thus excluded the power of legislation by the States on these subjects, except so far as it has been permitted by Congress . . . ." United States Supreme Court, Houston v. Moore 18 U.S. (5 Wheaton)
I. Introduction
In 1814 a Pennsylvania militiaman failed to muster when called to federal service. He was then tried, convicted, and fined by a military tribunal convened under authority of the state of Pennsylvania. This simple exercise of military authority in wartime raised federal issues of sufficient complexity that after six years of legal wrangling, the matter arrived before the United States Supreme Court. The case upholding the validity of the conviction was Houston v. Moore

He was born in 1802 , the next to youngest son of Amerton Yale, who had servedwith the Connecticut Militia, and Mercy Scoville Yale, his second wife.

About 1941, Dr. Yale's granddaughter Julia Milton (Yale) Cornwell wrote about her grandfather, Dr. Leroy Milton Yale Sr. in The Island Doctor, Dr. Leroy Milton Yale , reproduced here:
The Island Doctor, Dr. Leroy Milton Yale
by Julia Milton (Yale) Cornwell
My first memory of my Grandfather Yale is the recollection of an argument with my mother. How could she mean what she was telling me about the young man up there over the headboard of her bed, she must mean the other man with the beard. Grandpas were older, they had beards, so did Papa have a big white beard, and yet she seemed to expect me to believe his father had only a twinkle in his eye and where a beard should grow, just a hint of the same dimple I had myself. Papa had that last too, though he was lucky enough to conceal it. Grandpa Yale was a pleasant inhabitant of the bedroom, never quite smiling, but always ready to do so, always with that twinkle in his eyes, and that upspringing dark hair. Oh yes, I felt well acquainted with him from the start. I could not say how many years went before he was more than a twinkle from the wall. Certainly he kept that position through all the years until I was fourteen, but during those years I had gathered more details of his life - how he had been the doctor on the Vineyard, - the only doctor as I understood it. Can I have been right? Can it ever have been possible for one doctor to cover only the town of Tisbury leaving the inhabitants of Edgartown, Chilmark, and Gay Head to be born and buried by themselves? For his sake, I hope so, but I really do not know.

THE MILITIA IMMACULATAE OF ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE The Militia Immaculatae, known In the USA. as the Knights of the Immaculata, seeks to captivate the masses for Jesus Christ and renew demoralized society through union with Mary Immaculate. Specifically they strive for: 1) the conversion of sinners and non-believers beginning with themselves; 2) the growth of all in holiness; 3) reparation for sin and building up the kingdom of the Sacred Heart of Jesus through consecration to Mary, and participation In the Mass, Holy Communion and Eucharistic Adoration. The Founder While still a student friar, not yet a priest, St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe, OFM CONV., founded the MI on October 16, 1917 in Rome, Italy. The MI today continues to follow the original charter he gave to it then. The Original Charter of the MI "She shall crush your head" (Gn 3:15). "You alone (Mary) have crushed all heresies in the whole world" (former Office of the BVM). "Modern times are dominated by Satan and will be more so in the future. The conflict with hell cannot be engaged by men, even the most clever. The lmmaculata alone has from God the promise of victory over Satan. However, assumed into heaven, the Mother of God now requires our cooperation. She seeks souls who will consecrate themselves entirely to her, who will become in her hands effective instruments for the defeat of Satan and the spreading of God's kingdom upon earth." St. Maximilian Kolbe, OFM Conv. I. Purpose of the Knights Pursue the conversion of every person living in sin, heresy, schism and especially Freemasonry, and the growth in holiness of all persons, under the sponsorship of the B.V.M. Immaculate. II. Conditions for Membership 1. Make a voluntary and total oblation of oneself to the B.V.M. Immaculate as an instrument in her most holy hands. 2. Carry or wear the Miraculous Medal. 3. Have one's name placed on the register of the Pious Union of Rome at the Primary Center or at some canonically erected Affiliated Center. III. Means of the Apostolate 1. Once a day if possible, beseech the Immaculata with the ejaculation: "O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you, and for all who do not have recourse to you especially for the Freemasons." 2. Use all the legitimate means that one's particular state in life, condition, and varying opportunities make possible, the choice of which is left to the zeal and prudence of each member, and especially, propagate the Miraculous Medal. The Meaning of the Initials "MI" "MI" is the monogram for Militia Immaculatae, the international Latin name of the Knights of the Immaculata movement. Militia Immaculatae literally means "The Immaculata's Troops." All of its members - men, women or youth - are called "Knights of the Immaculata." This title signifies gallant generosity and a readiness to fight hard and even to sacrifice our lives for the Immaculata's cause just as our founder did. Am I Ready to Consecrate Myself Totally to the Immaculata and Join the MI? The spirit of the MI is the spirit of continual progress in Marian consecration. Its members strive to become every day more and more the PROPERTY of the Immaculata and work as diligently as they can to win the hearts of their neighbors for her. Not everyone who enrolls as a knight understands perfectly in the beginning the excellence of this consecration, but when lived in the spirit of the MI, the Immaculata enlightens and strengthens us more and more and gradually leads us to growth in holiness and fruitful service within the Church. How Do I Go About Enrolling in the MI? A. Select the date on which you want your name recorded in the official register of the MI and send it with your name to the canonically established National Center (Marytown) or the center nearest you. The Address for the National Center is: Militia Immaculatae National Center - Marytown 1600 W. Park Avenue Libertyville, IL 60048 Dates on which to have your name recorded in the official register of the MI: January 1, Solemnity of the Mother of God February 11, Our Lady of Lourdes March 25, Annunciation May 13, Our Lady of Fatima May 31, Visitation May / June, Mary, Mother of the Church June, Immaculate Heart of Mary July 16, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel August 15, The Assumption August 22, Queenship of Mary September 8, Nativity of the B.V.M. September 15, Our Lady of Sorrows October 7, Our Lady of the Rosary November 21, Presentation of Mary December 8, IMMACULATE CONCEPTION December 12, Our Lady of Guadalupe B. Prepare yourself for the day of enrollment by daily Mass if possible, the Rosary, short meditation, and some spiritual readings. C. If at all possible, receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on or before the day of your enrollment, or at least within the week following. D. On the day of your enrollment, renounce all attachment to sin, even the least sin, and ask Jesus to give you the Plenary Indulgence the Church grants on the day of your enrollment. In this way you remove all the obstacles you can to our Lady's complete possession of you in the Holy Spirit. E. On this same day, attend Mass and receive our Lord in Holy Communion. After Mass, in front of an altar or statue of our Lady (in church if possible), recite the official act of consecration. Finally, pray for the Pope's intentions. This will be one of the most important days of your life. Therefore, take your time and ask our Lady and the Holy Spirit for enlightenment and ask St. Kolbe to pray for you. Official Act of Consecration for Knights of the Immaculata: O Immaculata, Queen of Heaven and earth, refuge of sinners and our most loving Mother, God has willed to entrust the entire order of mercy to you. I, N., a repentant sinner, cast myself at your feet humbly imploring you to take me with all that I am and have, wholly to yourself as your possession and property. Please make of me, of all my powers of soul and body, of my whole life, death and eternity, whatever most pleases you. If it pleases you, use all that I am and have without reserve, wholly to accomplish what was said of you: "She will crush your head, " and, "You alone have destroyed all heresies in the whole world." Let me be a fit instrument in your Immaculate and merciful hands for introducing and increasing your glory to the maximum in all the many strayed and indifferent souls, and thus help extend as far as possible the blessed kingdom of the most Sacred Heart of Jesus. For wherever you enter you obtain the grace of conversion and growth, in holiness, since it is through your hands that all graces come to us from the most Sacred Heart of Jesus. V. Allow me to praise you, O Sacred Virgin. R. Give me strength against your enemies. Who Is St. Maximilian? St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe (1894-1941) was born at Pabiance, in Russian Occupied Poland. He was baptized Raymond at the Parish Church. Already proficient in virtue, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to him in 1906 A. D., about the time of his first communion. She offered him the graces of virginity and martyrdom and asked him which he wanted. Filled with zeal, he begged for both, and was filled thereafter with the most ardent desire to love and serve this Immaculate Queen. He joined the Order of Friars Minor Conventual at Lvov in Austrian Occupied Poland, where he took the name Maximilian, and after finishing preliminary studies he was sent to the International Seraphic College in Rome to pursue doctorates in philosophy and theology. In 1917 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the conversion of Alphonse Ratisbon, renowned anti-Catholic and agnostic of Jewish lineage, St. Maximilian was moved by divine grace to found a pious association of the faithful known as the Militia of the Immaculate. The Militia was to be a loosely organized tool in the hands of for the conversion and sanctification of non-catholics, especially those inimical to the Church. Its members consecrated themselves to the Blessed Virgin Mary, invoked Her daily for the conversion of sinners, and strove by every licit means to build up the Kingdom of the Sacred Heart throughout the world. Ordained to the priesthood in 1918, St. Maximilian returned to Poland to teach Church History in Cracow, where he organized the first group of the Militia outside of Italy. Because of ill health he was freed to devote his time exclusively to the promotion of the Militia, whereupon he founded the "Knight of the Immaculate," a monthly Roman Catholic Magazine promoting the knowledge, love and service of the Immaculate Virgin, in the conversion of all souls to Christ Our Lord. The phenomenal growth of this apostolate led to the foundation of the first city of the Immaculate, Niepokalanow in 1929. This was a friary of Franciscan priests and brothers engaged in the use of all kinds of modern equipment so as to promote via the mass media the Militia through all parts of Poland. Two years later St. Maximilian, heeding the call of the Holy Father to all religious, to come to the aid of the missionary efforts of the universal Church, volunteered to go to the Orient to found another city of the Immaculate, Mugenzai No Sono. St. Maximilian returned to Niepokalanow, as it spiritual father, in 1936 and under his able direction the number of the friars there grew above 900 in the months preceeding World War II. Publishing apostolate was producing 1,000,000 magazines monthly as well all 125,000 copies of a daily paper for the 1,000,000 members of the Militia worldwide. After the invasion of Poland by the German Wermacht in September of 1939, the friars dispersed and Niepokalanow was ransacked. St. Maximilian and about 40 others were taken to holding camps, first in Germany, and later in Poland. By the mercy of the Immaculate they were released and allow to return home on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the same year. During the war the friars turned to caring for about 5,000 Jewish refugees of the Poznan district as well as providing a repair shop for the farming machinery of the locale. To incriminate St. Maximilian, the Gestapo permitted one final printing of the "Knight of the Immaculatae" in December of 1940. In February of 1941, they came to Niepokalanow and arrested St. Maximlian. He was taken to Pawiak Prision in German Occupied Warsaw, Poland, and later was transferred to Auschwitz. Over the entrance gate of this concentration camp was a sign in German, "Work makes free!". In reality, upon entering the prisoners were told that all Jews had the right to live only two weeks, Roman Catholic priests 1 month. At Auschwitz several million Roman Catholics were put to death along with another several million persons of Jewish lineage. The objective of Hitler, in his hatred for Jesus Christ, was both to remove all witness to the truth of the original revelation of the God of Israel (the Jewish nation), as well as all who came to believe in Him in His Incarnation by Mary (Roman Catholics). Thus, St. Maximilian, Knight of the Immaculate Virgin, was placed by Divine Providence at the very center of the ideologic and spiritual conflict of the century, and was destined by God to be the sign of contradiction to a nation given over to diabolic hatred of God and His people. St. Maximilian, in response to the vicious hatred and brutality of the prison guards, was ever obedient, meek, and forgiving. He gave counsel to all his fellow prisoners "Trust in the Immaculate!" "Forgive!" "Love your enemies and pray for your persecutors!" He was noted for his generosity in surrendering his food despite the ravages of starvation that he suffered, for always going to the end of the line of the infirmary, despite the acute turberculosis afflicting him. In the end, by the maternal mediation of the Virgin Mary, he received the grace to be intimately conformed to Christ in death. For on the night of August 3, 1941 a prisioner sucessfully escaped from the same section of the came in which St. Maximilian was detained. In reprisal, the commandant ordered death by starvation for 10 men chosen at random from the same section. One of the condemned, Seargent Franciszek Gajowniczek, shouted out, lamenting that he would never see his wife and children again. In his stead, St. Maximilian Mary, who had remained standing all night long during the selection of the condemned, stepped forward and offered his own life in exchange for this man. Ten days later, having led the other 9 in prayers and hymns, St. Maximilian was given a lethal injection of carbolic acid, and passed into eternal glory. Pope Paul VI beatified St. Maximilian in 1973 and Pope John Paul II canonized him in 1982 as a martyr of charity. - Provided courtesy of: Eternal Word Television Network PO Box 3610 Manassas, VA 22110 Voice: 703-791-2576 Fax: 703-791-4250 Data: 703-791-4336 FTP: EWTN.COM Telnet: EWTN.COM Email address: SYSOP@ EWTN.COM EWTN provides a Catholic online information and service system. -

On 14 November 1910 Eugene Ely a Curtiss pilot, was the first pilot to take off from a ship when he flew from an 83 foot wooden deck platform built over the ram bow of the U.S. Navy cruiser Birmingham at Hampton Roads in Chesapeake Bay. For that flight Ely had used a four cylinder, water-cooled 50 Horse power Curtiss gasoline engine. Ely was also the first pilot to arrested land on and take off from a ship's flight deck. This occurred on 18 January 1911 when Eugene Ely successfully landed on and took off from the cruiser U.S.S. Pennsylvania in San Francisco Bay.

For a week prior to Eugene Ely's arrival in Eureka the Humboldt Times newspaper ran a series of articles advertising the exhibition flights planned for the 27th and 28th of May 1911 including a 3" by 3" photograph of Ely's historic flight off the cruiser U.S.S. Birmingham. Some local Eureka businessmen had planned this exhibition as a moneymaking proposition, which in the end turned out to be a failure for the backers.

On the 26th of May 1911 Eugene Ely, in company with his wife, her young sister Mercy Hall, his manager Norman Devaux, and two mechanics: W. Hoff and P. J. Rooney arrived on the steamer Iaqua in Humboldt Bay. With them was a Curtiss pusher aeroplane crated and with at least 4 extra engines. This group was met at dockside by the Fifth Division California Naval Militia (Eureka), City dignitaries, businessmen and a crowd of over 100 people.

George Washington on the Problems of the Militia [Excerpted from American History Told by Contemporaries , Vol. II: Building of the Republic , Albert Bushnell Hart, ed. (New York, MacMillan, 1899), pp. 490-492] Upon the character and service of the various Masses of American soldiers no testimony is so good as that of the commander-in-chief. Yet out of these irregular levies came the armies which defeated Howe, Burgoyne, Clinton, and Cornwallis. There is every reason to believe, the War has been protracted on this account. Our opposition being less, made the successes of the enemy greater. The fluctuation of the army kept alive their hopes, and at every period of the dissolution of a considerable part of it, they have flattered themselves with some decisive advantages. Had we kept a permanent army on foot, the enemy could have had nothing to hope for, and would in all probability have listened to terms long since. If the army is left in its present situation, it must continue an encouragement to the efforts of the enemy; if it is put upon a respectable one, it must have a contrary effect, and nothing, I believe, will tend more to give us peace the ensuing winter. It will be an interesting winter. Many circumstances will contribute to a negotiation. An army on foot not only for another campaign, but for several campaigns, would determine the enemy to pacific measures, and enable us to insist upon favorable terms in forcible language; an army insignificant in numbers, dissatisfied, crumbling into pieces, would be the strongest temptation they could have to try the experiment a little longer. It is an old maxim, that the surest way to make a good peace is to be well prepared for war.

ACEH: Indonesian-backed militia behind terror?
BY LESLEY McCULLOCH In the remote area of Aceh Tengah (central Aceh) there is a new and growing problem for the civilian population: the presence of Indonesian-backed militia. The rarely visited area has experienced a devastating attack on its social and economic fabric. The enclave's economy has almost ground to a halt, many schools and clinics have been destroyed, and whole villages burned or deserted. The smell of fear is tangible. Official local government figures for 2001 state that more than 1900 houses were burned in this small district alone, and there were almost 400 conflict-related deaths. To the local population of only 300,000, this is a devastating blow. However, the real figures are substantially higher. A local journalist (whose identity must be protected for fear of reprisals) has been keeping his own tally of the death and destruction. He alleges that more than 2200 houses were burned and 450 died. In addition, many people have disappeared (presumed dead), many others have been tortured and several thousand have fled the area. The casual observer may be forgiven for assuming that this violence too, as elsewhere in Aceh, is the result of actions by the military and police. And to a degree it is. But there is a more sinister element in this remote area.

East Timor militia intimidation continues
By Vannessa Hearman DILI Pro-independence forces and United Nations Assistance Mission in East Timor (UNAMET) workers are very confident that the referendum in East Timor on autonomy or independence, now scheduled for August 30, will go ahead without problems. The UN, headquartered in what used to be a teacher training college, is highly visible in Dili, but while there is broad agreement that its presence has resulted in less militia activity, the situation is still tense and the streets are deserted at night. Pro-independence activists, in particular, stay indoors after dark. On August 1, outside UNAMET's Dili regional office, Angelino Amaral, a 24-year-old bank worker, was shot three times by two masked men on a motorcycle. The gunmen were reported to be from the Aitarak militia. When Amaral died, local residents set alight the house of the suspected murderer. In regional areas, to which members of organisations such as the Student Solidarity Council have travelled to carry out voter education, the security situation is still bad. On the road between Dili and Ermera, villagers have deserted some hamlets, and houses and market stalls are being forced to fly the Indonesian flag.

A Reflection on East Timor ~ Carole McDonald rsm
A huge group of people gather together. It is the first anniversary of the massacre of priests, and people at Suai. There are many photos on a wall showing the place where the bodies were heaped together and then burnt. The Mass is over, but women , family and friends sit together weeping quietly at the very spot where their loved one was killed. Another place. This time Maliana. Again a Mass in the police office grounds where eleven men and one boy were lined up and murdered. The boy was in place of his father who had gone away hoping not to be caught, never dreaming that his 10 year old son would be forced to line up in his place, to be shot. A small stick held in place by a few rocks and a piece of white ribbon fluttering on top reminds us that there has been a death here. It is Afabubu near Luro and a woman of 23 yrs has died giving birth to her first child. The baby is perfect, but the young mother's body has been weakened by many bouts of untreated malaria, so that when there is bleeding at the birth of the baby, attended only by a mid-wife, her fragile body could not survive. She is buried in her wedding dress. A ten year old boy in the next village dies within twenty - four hours of this (in my eyes ) tragic death. He was sick for an hour and a half - couldn't get his breath, probably asthma or a cold, but probably he too had had malaria many times without any treatment and his little body was also weakened so it didn't take much to snuff out his life. There was no time even to call the ambulance. It would have taken about 4 hours anyway from the time of the call till they got him to hospital.

The Scottish Chiefs Until nine months ago I never even heard the word "militia." In the past few months, more & more people are asking me about it. Is their own rashness about to trap well-meaning people in a wicked government provocation? Whenever the popular media focuses on any controversial topic, it always makes me edgy, because the media operates a propaganda machine for the government and the Establishment. Ominously, two militia-related articles have appeared in national news magazines of late.
Militias in Montana
The 8/15/94 carried a gem entitled "The rise of citizen militias." The piece shredded the naive folks involved as it laid out their current concerns. According to extremist militia organizers claim that "a secret cadre of leaders hopes to rule the world through one global government" & are planning a takeover of the US with UN troops. Unmarked black helicopters have been spotted all over the country, part of a mysterious & secretive Multi- Jurisdictional Task Force (MJTF). Gurkhas and Royal Hong Kong Police are training in the Montana mountains. Observers have spotted hundred-car freight trains filled with UN equipment and Russian trucks. Urban black street gangs are being recruited and trained as shock troops to search house to house for guns under New World Order officers.

1st Sergeant John S. Poindexter
Company C, 14th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, U.S.
John S. Poindexter was born June 25, 1838 in Greene County, Illinois, the second son of Kentuckian Ambrose B. Poindexter and his wife, Virginia-born Polly (Clark). When he was a boy of about ten, the family moved to Missouri, first to Carroll Co. and soon thereafter to Lawrence Co. One assumes he grew into the vigorous life of all young men, learning to work hard, keep his word, and certainly to ride a horse amongst the green, wooded hills of southwest Missouri. And idealism, or at least an awareness of events beyond their local sphere, may have been instilled in him by his father, who served Lawrence County as a Justice of the Peace. John grew to a tall young man, two inches under six feet, with dark eyes that could reflect storms within. His youthful strength would soon meet its greatest test. With the election of a lanky Illinois lawyer to the presidency in November of 1860, the die of change was cast. The country held its breath as a new word found prominence in the national lexicon; succession. First one, then a half-dozen Southern states performed the pen-strokes severing the sacred ties of Union. Arsenals and other Federal property came under seizure by these states. On April 12, 1861, South Carolina troops fired upon and forced the surrender of a stubborn little garrison called Ft. Sumpter. Meanwhile, Missouri endeavored to remain clear of these entanglements, a resolution of neutrality initially being passed by the 1861 State Convention. Yet within Missouri, the coals of war dully smouldered.
