FAMOUS MERRIMANS
Below are listed some information I have on a few Merrimans who have found their way into historical documents. Last Updated: Thursday, September 18, 2003 MERRIMAN, Mansfield , son of Mansfield and Lucy Merriman, was born at Southington, Conn., on March 2, 1848. His father was a descendant of Captain Nathaniel Merriman, who came from England to Boston, Mass., in 1632, settled in New Haven, Conn., about 1640 and was, in 1670, one of the founders of Wallingford, Conn. His mother was a descendant of John hall, who came from England to Boston in 1632, settled in New Haven in 1639, and who also was one of the founders of Wallingford. Professor Merriman was elected a Junior of the American Society of Civil Engineers on May 12, 1875 and a Member on September 3, 1884. In 1906, the University of Pennsylvania conferred on Professor Merriman t he degree of Doctor of Science, and in 1913, the degree of Doctor of Laws was conferred on him by Lehigh University. He was instrumental in the design of the Manhattan Bridge as a member of the board of engineers appointed by the mayor. The total number of his books printed to 1925 was 340,000.
