Il est presque de l'âge des grands romantiques, mais il a l'air d'appartenir à la génération suivante, celle qui ne s'émerveille pas des premiers tumultes. Il est à peine l'aîné des Jeune-France, pourtant, qui furent de la bataille d'Hernani ; et il y a en lui quelque chose de plus moderne, à notre sens du mot, que chez Musset, Gautier, Borel ou Nerval." Louis Aragon La Lumière de Stendhal Prosper Mérimée est né à Paris, en 1803. Son père et sa mère sont des peintres de talent. Elevé dans un milieu bourgeois et artistique, Prosper Mérimée suit ses études au lycée Henri-IV, puis fait son droit, tout en fréquentant les salons littéraires de l'époque. Il fait bientôt figure de jeune homme cynique et libertin. The Rus [Ukrainians] , and especially the Cossacks, claimed to have driven away the infidels [invading Europe from the East] by themselves, and that their efforts had brought them no greater benefit than a change of masters. The Polish gentry, owners of almost the entire country, were viewed by the villagers as foreigners and usurpers. They spoke a language different from their vassals, and professed a different religion. Full of contempt for the Rus and for their beliefs, they treated them, in effect, with the utmost harshness. Some among them, animated by religious fervor, destroyed Orthodox churches, and attempted by violence to produce conversions. On all sides sprang up Catholic monasteries; Catholic priests, supported by soldiers, scoured the countryside to bring back apostates to the bosom of the church, and very often added threats and assaults to their earlier pronouncements. Prosper Merimée (1803-1870) Mérimée utilise les mêmes procédés littéraires que son ami Stendhal.(justesse de l'observation, sobriété et précision dans la forme) dans un genre qui n'est pas le roman, mais celui, plus concis, de la nouvelle. Il marque l'évolution du romantisme vers le réalisme impersonnel. La vie : Fils d'artistes, Prosper Mérimée connaît une jeunesse de dilettante, et se mêle à la vie mondaine. Sa distinction contraste avec l'exubérance d'un Balzac. Devenu avocat, il se lie d'amitié avec Stendhal, et ses premières pièces lui valent une réputation d'écrivain à la mode. En 1830, il parcourt l'Espagne, qui l'enchante. À son retour il entre dans la haute administration du gouvernement de Louis-Philippe. Il subit la révolution de 1848, plus qu'il ne l'encourage, et se rallie à Napoléon III. Familier dé la cour parce qu'il connaît bien l'impératrice Eugénie, d'origine espagnole, il refuse pourtant un poste de ministre. Il meurt à Cannes, en 1870, en même temps que s'écroule le second Empire. Le caractère : Mérimée s'intéresse à tout : archéologie, histoire ancienne et moderne, langues, littérature, etc. Il a le goût du détail et se documente méthodiquement avant d'écrire une nouvelle. Sa devise était : " Souviens-toi de te méfier. " Elle traduit non seulement ses scrupules de savant mais aussi la fierté de son caractère. Il apparaît à beaucoup comme un personnage froid et distant, sans aucune spontanéité, attentif à se maîtriser et à ne montrer aucune faiblesse.
