See-Saw
S HE was a harlot, and I was a thief: But we loved each other beyond belief: She lived in the garret, and I in the kitchen, And love was all that we both were rich in. When they sent her at last to the hospital, Both day and night my tears did fall. They fell so fast, that, to dry their grief, I borrowed my neighbor's handerchief. The world, which, as it is brutally taught, Still judges the act in lieu of the thought, Found my hand in my neighbour's pocket, And clapped me, at once, under chain and locket. When they asked me about it, I told them plain Love it was that had turned my brain: How should I heed where my hand had been, When my heart was dreaming of Celestine? Twelve friends were so struck by my woful air, That they sent me abroad for a change of air: And, to prove me the kindness of their intent, They sent me at charge of the Government.

The One Thing Needful

We may live without poetry music and art;
We may live without conscience and live without heart;
We may live without friends; we may live without books;
But civilized man cannot live without cooks.
He may live without lore - what is knowledge but grieving?
He may live without hope - what is hope but deceiving?
He may live without love - what is passion but pining?
But where is the man who can live without dining? From the narrative poem 'Lucile' (1860) by Owen Meredith, the pseudonym of Edward Robert Bulwer Lytton, 1st Earl of Lytton (1831 - 1891), British Statesman, Poet, and Novelist; nephew of Edward George Lytton Bulwer Owen Meredith Otherwise known as Lord Lytton, took his pseudonym from the names of two of his ancestors, Owen Gwynned ap Griffith , King of North Wales, and ap Meredith ap Tudor , great-grandfather of Henry VI of England. Once Meredith was termed "third among living poets." He won the qualified praise of the Brownings and George Meredith. Yet due to his prolixity, posterity remembers him but vaguely as a facile rhymester who drew a malicious parody by Swinburne and judged himself in the lines: ... Genius is the master of man, Genius does what it must, and talent does what it can."

Came across a great quote and was hoping that someone out there might be able to give me some history on it.
"We may live without poetry, music and art. We may live without conscience and live without heart. We may live without friends, we may live without books, but civilized man cannot live without cooks"
The quote is said to be from Athenaeus. I was hoping to find out if it was from a particular writing and time frame.
Thank you all

Mezzaluna Jim The quotation of which you speak is from Owen Meredith (1831–1891), British poet, diplomat. Athenaeus The quote belongs to Owen Meredith , indeed, but this particular quote is used as an Introduction in the edition of Athenaeus, The Deipnosophists, by Loeb Classical Library, translated by C.B.Cullick!
That's why many people attribute this quote to Athenaeus. Not me, the original :)

CULINAIRE MANUALS Dr Bill Gallagher is the Chairman of the South African Chefs Association and the President of the World Association of Cooks Societies

It is my pleasure to write a short foreword for this excellent work.
Kevin Gericke has taken his many years of experience in both the kitchen and the classroom to produce a very thorough set of training material that will assist many young culinarians in their quest for knowledge.
The content is well researched and practical to follow, with the emphasis on good culinary techniques that are still required in the modern age of kitchens, together with a down to earth approach to the basic principles of cookery.
South Africa has some of the finest ingredients at its disposal and the great news is we can produce some of the world's finest chefs - all we need is proper instruction and a sense of self-discipline. Was it Owen Meredith (1831 - 1891) who wrote: "You may live without poetry

What’s in Store
Goodness what a busy 1998 we have had! And as I write we still have 3 major events to come: The Young Peoples Concert (Sunday 6 December), The Katona twins (Friday 11 December) and our Christmas club night (Sunday 13 December), all of which promise to be very enjoyable. I couldn’t resist mentioning some of the activities we are lining up for next year. The Society will be organising a full programme of concerts, including Laurence Tendler and Amanda Cook. South Hill Park is also expected to have a full complement of big name concerts, and if 1998 is anything to go by we are in for an excellent year. There are also a number of special club evenings and events to look forward to:-
  • A Latin American evening, with the emphasis on folk and dance music e.g. tangos and rhumbas, with a quiz and hopefully some tasty tit-bits and appropriate beverages (!). A "Guitar plus" evening where the music will be mainly guitar + singer, or guitar + another musical instrument, e.g. recorder, flute, bassoon (!), piano, violin, washboard . . . etc.
