George Meredith (1828-1909)
George Meredith, son of a Portsmouth tailor, was educated in Germany and studied law in England, but preferred a literary career. He began by writing for the periodicals. In 1859 after having written the somewhat- flimsy The Shaving of Shagpat (1856) and Farina (1857) he published The Ordeal of Richard Feverel, which immediately placed him in the front ranks of the English novelists of his time, though the public was slow to recognize his merit. For over thirty years he acted as reader of manuscripts for the publishing firm of Chapman and Hall.

And we drop like the fruits of the tree,
Even we,
Even so."

GEORGE MEREDITH
MEREDITH, GEORGE Merediths first appearance in print was in the character of a poet, and his first published poem Chillian Wallah, may be found in Chamberss Journal for the 7th of July 1849. Two years later he put forth a small volume of Poems (1851), which was at least fortunate in eliciting the praise of two judge~ whose opinion was of the first importance to a beginner. Tennyson. was at once struck by the individual flavour of the verse, and declared of one poem, Love in the Valley, that he could not get the lines out of his head. Charles Kingsleys eulogy was at once more public and more particular. In Frasers Magazine he subjected the volume to careful consideration, praising it for richness and quaintness of tone that reminded him of Herrick, for completeness and coherence in each separate poem, and for the animating sweetness and health of the genera] atmosphere. At the same time he censured the laxity 01 rhythm, the occasional lack of polish, and the tendency to MERCURY mercury compounds; it is the principal ore, occurring in nature as the mineral cinnabar (q.v.), and is extensively used as a pigment, vermilion (q.v.). It is obtained as a black powder by triturating mercury with sulphur, the compound thus formed being known in pharmacy as Aethiops mineralis, and also by precipitating a mercuric salt with sulphuretted hydrogen. It is only slightly acted upon by nitric acid; it dissolves in aqua regia; chlorine gives a yellow compound, sHgS . HgCU; and it dissolves in potassium sulphide solutions to form double salts of variable composition.

George Meredith
Meredith was from a working-class background which he later tried to hide. He was educated rather sporadically in England and at a Moravian school in Germany, and did not attend university. He worked as a reader for the publishers Chapman and Hall, in which capacity he rejected such authors as George Bernard Shaw and manuscripts such as Ellen Wood's East Lynne , one of the best-selling novels of the Victorian period. He married young and in 1857 his wife, the daughter of Thomas Love Peacock, left him for a member of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. After her death in 1861 he remarried. Modern Love takes the poetic sequence, so often used like Barrett Browning's Sonnets from the Portuguese to express passionate desire for a beloved or to chart a romantic relationship, in new directions as it dissects the disintegrating relationship between a man and his wife. Like Meredith's fiction, it presents a sympathetic but ultimately ambiguous view of the confining situation of marriage for intelligent women, as well as being a poignant reflection on the complex changes taking place in relationships between middle-class men and women in Victorian society. From Modern Love (written 1861-2, published 1862)

George Meredith
George Meredith was born in Portsmouth where his father and grandfather were naval outfitters. At the age of 14 he went to the Moravian School at Neuwied, Germany, and was afterwards articled to a London solicitor. He soon gave this up, however, in favour of journalism and writing, working for the Ipswich Journal and as a reader for a publishing company. In 1849 he married Mary Ellen Nicholls, the widowed daughter of Thomas Love Peacock , but she left him for the painter Henry Wallis. He lodged for a time with Swinburne and Rossetti in Chelsea and following the death of his wife, he married Marie Vulliamy in 1864 and they moved to a cottage in Box Hill in Surrey, which was to become his permanent home. In 1866 he acted as a war correspondent in Italy. His first volume of verse, Poems , dedicated to Thomas Love Peacock , was published in 1851 and his second, Modern Love (1862), established him as a successful poet. A third volume of poetry, Poems and Lyrics of the Joy of Earth appeared in 1883, followed by Poems and Ballads of Tragic Life A Reading of Life (1909), and
