The best of H.L.Mencken, witty defender of liberty
During the first half of the 20 th century, Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) was the most outspoken defender of liberty in America. He spent thousands of dollars challenging restrictions on freedom of the press. He boldly denounced President Woodrow Wilson for whipping up patriotic fervor to enter World War I, which cost him his job as a newspaper columnist. And he denounced Franklin Delano Roosevelt for amassing dangerous political power and maneuvering to enter World War II. Amid the uproar, he ended up resigning his newspaper job. Although he was intensely controversial, Mencken earned respect as one of America’s foremost newspapermen and literary critics. He produced about 30 books, contributions to 20 more books, and thousands of newspaper columns.

Edited by S. T. Joshi No one ever argued more forcefully or with such acerbic wit against the foolish aspects of religion as H. L. Mencken (1880-1956). As a journalist, he gained national prominence through his newspaper columns describing the now-famous 1925 Scopes trial, which pitted Fundamentalists against a public school teacher who dared to teach evolution. But both before and after the Scopes trial, Mencken spent much of his career as a columnist and book reviewer lampooning the ignorant piety of gullible Americans.

American editor and critic
The urge to save humanity is almost always only a false-face for the urge to rule it.
H. L. Mencken , quoted in the table of contents for Impact Press (October-November 2000) People say we need religion when what they really mean is we need police.
H. L. Mencken , quoted in Jim Versluys, "The Right-Wing Case Against Religionism" (May, 2001) The most curious social convention of the great age in which we live is the one to the effect that religious opinions should be respected.
H. L. Mencken , in American Mercury (March, 1930) We must respect the other fellow's religion, but only in the sense and to the extent that we respect his theory that his wife is beautiful and his children smart.
H. L. Mencken Minority Report (1956), quoted from Jonathon Green, The Cassell Dictionary of Insulting Quotations The way to deal with superstition is not to be polite to it, but to tackle it with all arms, and so rout it, cripple it, and make it forever infamous and ridiculous. Is it, perchance, cherished by persons who should know better? Then their folly should be brought out into the light of day, and exhibited there in all its hideousness until they flee from it, hiding their heads in shame.
True enough, even a superstitious man has certain inalienable rights. He has a right to harbor and indulge his imbecilities as long as he pleases, provided only he does not try to inflict them upon other men by force. He has a right to argue for them as eloquently as he can, in season and out of season. He has a right to teach them to his children. But certainly he has no right to be protected against the free criticism of those who do not hold them. He has no right to demand that they be treated as sacred. He has no right to preach them without challenge. Did Darrow, in the course of his dreadful bombardment of Bryan, drop a few shells, incidentally, into measurably cleaner camps? Then let the garrisons of those camps look to their defenses. They are free to shoot back. But they can't disarm their enemy.

H.L. Mencken (1880-1956) was an opinionated and controversial columnist for the Baltimore Sun whose caustic wit and scathing political satire were legendary. He rose to national prominence, partly through his coverage of the Scopes Monkey Trial. It is unfortunate that our current public discourse lacks his sharp barbs which could easily puncture the piety that afflicts us.
H.L. Mencken is laudably clear and emphatic in his criticism of religion. His magnificent Treatise on the Gods (1946, available from Johns Hopkins University Press, ISBN 0-8018-5654-X) addresses the fundamental nature and origin of religion, how it evolved over time, and the many varieties of it. He provides a devastating look at the history and faults in Christianity, including a lucid and scholarly discussion of the gospels, apocrypha, and structure of the old testament. He concludes with a wonderfully direct assault upon apologists who attempt to reconcile the truths of science with religious mysteries. Some of Mencken's harshest observations: The priest, realistically considered, is the most immoral of men, for he is always willing to sacrifice every other sort of good to the one good of his arcanum - the vague body of mysteries that he calls the truth.

H. L. Mencken (1880-1956)
Henry Louis Mencken (1880-1956) was a famous American journalist, critic, and editor known for his irreverent social criticism and lively invective. His robust, often savagely witty style and his tremendous productivity as a writer brought him distinction in almost every literary form he attempted. From about 1910 to 1940, he was the most important literary figure in the United States. He began his journalism career at the age of 18 as a reporter with the Baltimore Morning Herald. By the age of 25, he had risen to editor in chief. After the paper closed in 1906, Mencken joined the Baltimore Sun as Sunday editor. He worked for the Sun for the rest of his career, except for leaves of absence during the two world wars. Mencken became famous for his newspaper columns, in which he enjoyed attacking American taste and culture, ridiculing a wide range of popular beliefs. From 1908 to 1923, Mencken wrote about 2,000 book reviews for the magazine Smart Set
