(Author Unknown)
A turkey is a funny bird,
Its head goes wobble, wobble,
All it knows is just one word,
"Gobble, gobble, gobble." Thanksgiving Time

And nuts and apples gathered in,
And cornstalks waiting for the cows,
And pumpkins safe in barn and bin

Christmas Greeting Sing hey! Sing hey!
For Christmas Day;
Twine mistletoe and holly,
For friendship glows
In winter snows,
And so let's all be jolly. Traditional A Christmas Hymn
(John Charles McNeill, 1874-1907) Near where the shepherds watched by night
And heard the angels o'er them,
The wise men saw the starry light
Stand still at last before them.
No armored castle there to ward His precious life from danger, But, wrapped in common cloth, our Lord Lay in a lowly manger. No booming bells proclaimed his birth, No armies marshalled by, No iron thunders shook the earth, No rockets clomb the sky; The temples builded in his name Were shapeless granite then, And all the choirs that sang his fame Were later breeds of men. But, while the world about him slept, Nor cared that he was born

Betts, Wicker and McGirt will be honored at the Weymouth Center in Southern Pines, NC on Sunday, October 17, 2004 at 2 pm. More details will be available soon. The North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame Inducts Five Authors in 2002 NC Poet Laureate, Fred Chappell presided at the 2002 induction of Reynolds Price and Elizabeth Spencer. Also honored posthumously were Glen Rounds, of Southern Pines, LeGette Blythe, of Charlotte, and Christian Reid (Frances Fisher), of Salisbury. The large upstairs room at Weymouth that houses the Hall of Fame was refurbished in time for the ceremony, thanks to a generous donation by the Women of Weymouth of recessed lighting, new paint, a refinished floor, and a re-hanging of the portraits of all thirty-six inductees.

John Shaw Collection Notes on Authors As he built his collection, John Shaw compiled a large number of notes concerning the authors of children's materials and poetry. These notes were primarily biographical in nature and were sometimes used to justify the inclusion of a certain author in the Collection. This finding aid is a valuable tool in identifying a large portion of the authors whose works are included in the Shaw Collection. The Shaw Collection is in the process of being cataloged, and many of the works of the authors listed below are at the present moment uncataloged. As works are cataloged, this finding aid will be updated to provide the user with the call number of materials representative of a certain author. Beside each author's entry below, a call number will appear preceded by "CL" The notes included in this collection are arranged alphabetically by author's last name or by subject. To find a particular author quickly, use the Find or equivalent command that is common in most web browsers. Shaw Box 1605 Folder 1
