...if the leaders of our planet
decided to wage a war...
and nobody pitches up.
Sit back and imagine that for a moment...
At the ll th hour
of the ll th day
of the ll th month
of the ll nd year
of the lll rd millennium...
let us remember...
This past week I received the following extract in an e-mail from the author of the Tradek Market Report . Touched by the truth, I decided to embellish on it a little. My thanks to the author - isn't the Internet a wonderful place? "An entire era ago, when traders used to do battle for their clients on the "Floor" of the Stock Exchange, which was unceremoniously cast aside by the advent of "online" trading, a dear Gentleman by the name of Harry Lane used to, for a few weeks leading up to 11 November, sell poppies at 50c a pop (weak pun). I recall as well my school years also remembering the importance of this day. But, as with many traditions and time, the poppy day theme seems to have fallen away. So, if over the weekend you come across someone peddling poppies for a few of your loose coins, take the time to stop and remember the fallen of the Great War! The tradition of "Remembrance" day is that on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month people, across the globe, stop and observe a moment's silence for those that perished (from all sides) on the fields of Flanders and died in a war that was both brutal and long!

IN FLANDERS FIELDS In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe: To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

as papoilas estão florescendo entre as cruzes
que em fileiras e mais fileiras assinalam
nosso lugar; no céu as cotovias voam
e continuam a cantar heroicamente,
e mal se ouve o seu canto entre os tiros cá em baixo.

John McCrae
John was born in 1872 and raised in Guelph, Ontario and is remembered as one of Guelph's most famous sons. McCrae was more than a poet, and was in fact a doctor, soldier, author and artist. The paternal grandparents of John McCrae, Thomas and Jean (nee Campbell) emigrated to Canada from Scotland in 1849 and settled in Guelph. Their son David married Janet Eckford and they had three children; Thomas (1870), John (1872) and Geills (1878). John's early education was received in Guelph, first at Central Public School and subsequently at Guelph Collegiate Institute. While at Guelph Collegiate, John joined the Highland Cadet Corps which was affiliated with the school. One year later, at the age of 15, McCrae became a bugler in the local militia regiment of artillery commanded by his father. He later joined this same regiment as a gunner. At the age of 16, John was awarded a scholarship to the University of Toronto (left photo) due to his academic achievement at Guelph Collegiate. McCrae attended classes at the University of Toronto until 1892-3, when he took a year off his studies due to recurring problems with asthma. During this break from university John was a resident master in English and Mathematics at the Ontario Agricultural College (O.A.C.) in Guelph. After returning to Toronto and completing his B.A., John commenced studies in medicine at the University of Toronto and did a medical residency at the Garrett Hospital, a Maryland children's convalescent home.

If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields. The red poppy has been part of Remembrance Day services since the early 1920's, and is now worn on other commemorative occasions, including ANZAC Day. During the First World War the battlefields were literally churned by high explosive shells, creating a surreal landscape of mud, entangled barbed wire and water filled craters. When given a brief chance to recover, and especially after the 1918 Armistice, the first flowers to bloom were the red poppies. In 1915, Canadian Brigade Surgeon, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae (1872-1918), was so moved by the sight of the fields of poppies stretching across the Ypres battlefield that he put pen to paper and wrote his moving poem, "In Flanders Fields."

During the second battle of Ypres the canal bank at this point formed the British front line, with the Germans on the opposite bank. Some concrete bunkers at the bottom of the bank were used as advanced dressing stations, and it was around these that the cemetery grew. One of the doctors working in the bunkers was the Canadian, John McCrae, and it was here that he wrote his famous poem 'In Flanders Field'. There are over 1,000 burials here including Rifleman Valentine Strudwick - one of several 15 year olds buried in Flanders. The youngest British casualty of the war was Private J Condon, a 14 year old who is buried nearby at Poelkapelle. (Although others suggest he was only 13 - see The Heritage of the Great War The Dressing Station Bunkers lie adjacent to the cemetery and the plaque to John McCrae is inside the cemetery entrance. Review by Lorraine Douglas. excerpt:
Ypres, a fourteenth-century town encircled by a moat, had been the home of a beautiful medieval cathedral and Cloth Hall. By the time John McCrae arrived in Flanders, however, the town, called "Wipers" by the soldiers, was ruined and refugees streamed from it. Troops were camped not far from the Yser Canal, where they cooked meals, wrote letters to loved ones, and strengthened friendships that, in some instances, began back in their homeland. This beautiful tribute to one of the most popular poems ever written presents the story of its creator against the background of the First World War. John McCrae was an idealistic Canadian doctor who wrote the poem in 1915 shortly after his friend Lieutenant Alexis Helmer had died at Ypres. The text of the poem and accompanying paintings are interwoven through the book. The artist visited Flanders and has recreated the dark landscape of the war in oil paintings filled with expressive brushstrokes.
Linda Granfield includes numerous interesting details and reproductions from archival sources in her well-balanced and thoughtful text. Her writing is clear and easy to understand, but does not treat the subject simplistically. The controversy of McCrae's call to arms in the poem is discussed in the context of the times in which he wrote the poem. The continuing symbolism of the poppy in remembrance of war is explained. Endpaper maps bordered with scenes from the war show the geography of the major battles in France. This elegantly produced book is a valuable resource.

Significance of the Poppy
The story of how the Poppy became an international symbol of remembrance is a remarkable one.
In Flanders Fields
Lt-Col John McCrae This connection between the red poppy and war dead was renewed over a century later on the Western Front during the First World War. It was verses by Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae (1872-1918), a Canadian Medical Officer, which began the intriguing process by which the Flanders Poppy became immortalised worldwide as the symbol of remembrance: The inspiration for the verses had been the death of a fellow officer, Lt Alexis Helmer, of the 1st Brigade Canadian Field Artillery on 2 May 1915, during the Second Battle of Ypres (Ieper) in western Belgium, for whom McCrae had performed the burial service. McCrae's verses, which he had scribbled in pencil on a page torn from his despatch book, were sent anonymously by a fellow officer to the English magazine, Punch , which published them under the title 'In Flanders Fields' on 8 December 1915.
