John McCrae - In Flanders Fields

it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, thoughpoppies grow In Flanders fields. by John McCrae (18721918).

John McCrae "In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row..." - John McCrae, 1915. In what would become the best known poem from the "Great War", John McCrae was solemnly describing the horror, suffering and loss that he saw as he treated the wounded who had fought near Ypres, Belgium - an area known as Flanders. It was here that the Germans first used deadly chlorine gas in their attacks. Undoubtedly, John was not spared of its poison. According to some accounts, the death of a friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer of Ottawa, who was killed by a shell on May 2 1915, greatly affected McCrae. When Lieutenant Helmer was buried later that day, it was McCrae who performed the funeral ceremony in the chaplain's absence. John McCrae was born (November 30 1872) and raised in Guelph, Ontario, where the McCrae home still stands, serving as a museum. John graduated from the University of Toronto medical school, receiving the gold medal, in 1898, but soon found himself leading an artillery battery in the Boer War. Years later, when the Great War began, he felt compelled to enlist as soon as possible. No one could have imagined the horrific events that would unfold in the next four years, but John was one of many witnesses who saw the bitter fruits of War. Like thousand of school children, I memorized the words to John's moving poem. May I never forget them, nor the sacrifice made by brave soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom, and now lie in Flander's Field.

McCrae joined the Bouer War as a soldier. 224 Canadians died in the Bouer War, but John McCrae survived. He became a member of the Canadian Medical Corps.
By the time he was a veteran of the Bouer War in South Africa, John McCrae was described as a person with "the eye of a gunner, the hand of a surgeon, and the soul of a poet". He went into the line at Ypres on the 22nd of April, 1915. McCrae came away from Ypres with 15 lines scribbled on a scrap of paper. Those lines were a poem which started, "

William Noel Hodgson was a Georgian poet in the style of Rupert Brooke . He volunteered in 1914, and served with the Devonshire Regiment. In September, 1915, during the Battle of Loos, "[u]nder heavy enemy fire Hodgson, three other young officers and a hundred men held a captured trench for 36 hours without reinforcements or food. Hodgson was awarded the Military Cross" (Powell, A Deep Cry 99). Marching out of this hell-hole, Hodgson composed the incredibly resilient " Back to Rest ." In 1916, Hodgson began writing stories, poems, and essays about the front under the pseudonym "Edward Melbourne." Hodgson was especially fond of telling tales about his resourceful "batman" (his aide). His pieces enjoyed an audience in the leading magazines of the day. As his unit waited to move up to its jumping off position at the Somme Offensive, Hodgson composed his last poem " Before Action ." On July 1st, Hodgson's battalion attacked the German trenches south of Mametz. "At the end of the day the bodies of 159 men, including Noel Hodgson were found. The body of Hodgson's batman was lying at his side. The men of the 9th Battalion were buried in their Mansel Copse trench, and a notice above the trench read: "The Devonshires held this trench.
