Douglas was an American writer chiefly noted for her 'Kathie' series and for her 'Little girl' series published in 10 volumes from 1897 to 1909. (Allibone Supp). A little girl in old Quebec is her only book with a Canadian setting. It is a highly romantic tale of Quebec City in the days of Champlain. The history is combined with the unusual story of a fey child who finally succumbs to love and marriage. There are interesting comments on the lot of women (both native and non-native), and religion. 470 DUNCAN, Norman, 1871-1916. THE YOUNG EXILES/OR/THE WILD TRIBES OF THE NORTH/BY ANNE BOWMAN/AUTHOR OF "ESPERANZA," "THE CASTAWAYS," ETC./WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY HARRISON WEIR/ [publ. device] /LONDON/GEORGE ROUTLEDGE & SONS, LIMITED/NEW YORK: E.P. DUTTON & CO./ [191-?]. Half-title. Anne Bowman was an English writer. According to her listing in Allibone Supp she was most prolific and chiefly wrote boys' adventure stories. The young exiles is set chiefly in Russia and Siberia as a freedom-loving Russian family of the nobility flees from persecution by the Emperor. They cross from Siberia into America and with the help of friendly Indians and fur-trading factors, they make their way across Canada and eventually to England. Although the three young people in the story are not the chief protagonists, the Preface makes it clear that the book was intended for the young. In the Preface also the author remarks on Robinson Crusoe and The Swiss Family Robinson. Indeed this work has elements of these survival stories as well as their strong Christian component. 520 DWIGHT, Mary Lane.

From the official Canadian Heritage website: The Sovereign's birthday has been celebrated in Canada since the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday, was declared a holiday by the Legislature of the Province of Canada in 1845. After Confederation, the Queen's birthday was celebrated every year on May 24 unless that date was a Sunday, in which case a proclamation was issued providing for the celebration on May 25. After the death of Queen Victoria in 1901, an Act was passed by the Parliament of Canada establishing a legal holiday on May 24 in each year (or May 25 if May 24 fell on a Sunday) under the name Victoria Day. Nellie McClung (1873-1951) the outstanding activist who led the fight for women's rights including the right to vote and to run for office made some profound statements in 1929. She said, "We may live to see the day when women will no longer be news!" In recent years this hope has been realized - no one questions women in politics today and they have been leaders in every political arena. Later in this article I will look at the involvement of women in the recent municipal election and see if Nellie's admonition that "we object to barriers, just as range horses object to fences" became true. One reference summarized the role of many women in the early days of the last century as having "lives filled with endless toil, too numerous pregnancies, cumbersome clothes and second class citizenship." The Election Act of the Dominion stated that "no women, idiot, lunatic, or child" could vote. Early Voters List in Chisholm Township for Poll #2 - 84 men - no women.

Pembina Mountain
With the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway to Winnipeg, and its extension westward, transportation was provided for the stream of settlers who came to establish homes for themselves on prairie homesteads. The flat lands adjoining Winnipeg were at first avoided in favor of those with higher altitudes, especially those where wood and good water were available. It was not long before homesteads dotted the different districts known as Riding Mountain, Moose Mountain, Turtle Mountain and Pembina Mountain, and it is more particularly of the Pembina Municipality, with Manitou as its centre, that I write. The Red River Valley, which scientists tell us is the bottom of Lake Agassiz, had its western shore just west of the present town of Morden, where traces of the old lake beach can still be seen. From the point where Dead Horse Creek enters the valley, the ground rises abruptly until within twenty miles west there is a rise in altitude of over a thousand feet. This was the area known as Pembina Mountain, for the most part rolling prairie with occasional poplar bluffs, and some sloughs, most of which have since been drained by municipal ditches. Each year, in the early summer, the Indians from the Swan Lake Reserve gathered seneca root on the open prairie, for which manufacturing chemists furnished a market.

Oldtown Folks
by Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896)
While she is invariable remembered today for her anti-slavery writings, Harriet Beecher Stowe also wrote a number of stories and novels of set in her native New England, including Oldtown Folks (1869). The quality of her work varies, but at her best, Stowe was an early and effective realist. Her settings are often accurately and detailedly described. Her portraits of local social life, particularly some of the minor characters, reflect an awareness of the complexity of the culture she lived in, and an ability to communicate that culture to others.
Tales of the Punjab
by Flora Annie Steel (1847-1929)
Flora Annie Steel went to India as a young bride in 1868. Under conditions that sent many memsahibs home in shattered health, or killed them outright, she flourished. She travelled through the hill country, collecting folk-tales, which were eventually published as Tales of the Punjab: Told by the People (1894). She worked actively in the Indian communities, in roles as diverse as school inspector, nurse, 'doctress', and even Municipal Hall designer. She also published the definitive Complete Indian House-keeper and Cook (1890) as well as histories and novels of British India.
