Visit the Famous 5 Foundation Web Site Nellie Letitia (Mooney) McClung Suffragist, politician Photo courtesy of the National Archives of Canada (PA-030212) Nellie McClung was born in 1873 in Ontario, but her family moved to Manitoba in 1880 as pioneer homesteaders. She was a pioneer teacher, author, suffragist, social reformer, lecturer and legislator who lived in the West (Manitou, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary and Victoria) until her death in 1951. A well-rounded and capable woman, her various careers cannot be described separately, as her teaching, writing and public speaking abilities all fueled her desire to improve the rights of Canadian women. This desire, combined with her true activist nature, Christian faith and sense of duty, meshed perfectly with the social and moral reform movements arising in the West in the early 1900s and produced one of Canada's great social activists. Rural life, the plight of immigrants, conditions in cities and factories, the movements for prohibition and women's suffrage, World War I, the Depression and World War II provided the historical context for Nellie, both as a writer and a social reformer. Although some call her a crusader, it is said that she was a practical and realistic leader who put words into political action. While a young mother in Manitou, she started working with the Women's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). She founded many organizations: the Winnipeg Political Equality League, the Federated Women's Institutes of Canada and the Women's Institute of Edmonton, for which she was also the first president. She was also active in, among others, the Canadian Authors Association, the Canadian Women's Press Club, the Methodist Church of Canada and the Calgary Women's Literary Club.

Nellie Letitia (Mooney) McClung was born at Chatsworth, Ontario on October 20, 1873, the youngest of six children of an Irish immigrant family. When Nellie was six years old, the Mooneys moved to a homestead near Wawanesa, Manitoba. Although she was ten when she started school, Nellie earned a teaching certificate by the time she was sixteen. When she married a druggist named Robert Wesley McClung in 1896, she gave up her teaching career. While living in Manitou, Manitoba Nellie became active in the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union, a group that believed the abuse of alcohol caused unemployment, disease, poverty and immorality. In addition to campaigning to prohibit alcohol, the WCTU promoted the idea that women should be permitted to vote. McClung published her first novel

"Holy Terror" When Helen Letitia Mooney married pharmacist Wes McClung in 1896, she was already a seasoned pioneer, for, when she was six, her family had moved from Grey County in Ontario to homestead on the banks of the Souris River. Both before and after her marriage, Nellie was also a pioneer in everything to do with Women’s Rights, including campaigns for suffrage, temperance, and the decade-long, all-important Persons’ Case which finally, in the celebrated Privy Council judgement of 1929, changed the demeaning and inferior status of women as previously set down in the British North American Act.
A dynamic lecturer, Nellie McClung was one of the few women speakers of her day who could fill Toronto’s Massey Hall. Her name appears on a plaque in Ottawa at the entrance to the Senate Chamber, with those of four other fighters for women’s suffrage who succeeded in opening the doors of the Senate to women. [Photo, courtesy The Toronto Star] Because of the difficulties and poverty associated with establishing the family farm, Nellie couldn’t begin school until she was ten, but she was a clever scholar and an eager one, and she was just 16 when she finished Normal School in Winnipeg and began teaching in a country school. As soon as she could save enough money, she returned to Winnipeg to finish the Collegiate Institute there. Always, wherever she was, she became a reforming activist in the organizations she believed in. Living in Winnipeg, and later in Edmonton, she became prominent politically for her outspoken convictions and her quick wit. She saw humour in a situation as readily as she saw corruption, and pompous politicians were one of her most frequent targets. She toured Manitoba in a mock Parliament that was a wicked satire on certain Members of the day, and the enfranchising of Manitoba women in 1916 was in no small part her victory.

Review by Mary Thomas. excerpt:
The smell of fresh-brewed coffee was just beginning to waft in from the kitchen as the last woman stepped into the room and found herself a chair. It was Mrs. Ingram. Nellie wondered again why Mrs. Ingram came to the meetings. Perhaps she was acting as some sort of spy. Still, what faster way to spread news about the organization? Mrs. Ingram always told everything to everyone, whether they wanted to hear it or not! "As many of your are now aware," Nellie began, "The WCTU has begun to expand its work. We do little things and big things - any good work to help a neighbour or a child....We are best described as organized motherhood, for we have banded together to make life easier and safer for girls and boys. Whatever tries to destroy our homes - whatever hurts our children - whatever makes it harder for anyone to do right - these are our enemies - these we are pledged to fight. "But WCTU women no longer feel their 'homemaking' efforts lie only within their own four walls. We could work our fingers to the bone, helping other women, teaching children, and fighting the liquor traffic. But we would not be much further ahead. So we must branch out in our efforts.... I have just received a telegram from one of our fellow members in Winnipeg...She has finally succeeded in getting an appointment with Manitoba's premier, Sir Rodmond Roblin, regarding the horrible working conditions in the factories in Winnipeg's North End. This is a perfect example of the type of thing we all must do."

Nellie McClung has been a very influential person in this century and will be remembered for centuries to come. Nellie McClung changed history forever and is a very important role model for people today that is why I picked her for my project, and because she gave women the rights that they deserve. One big thing that stands out to me is the fact that she taught seven years of school from grade one to grade eight with only five months of training when she was fifteen. She started teaching when she was sixteen and today teachers have to go through years of training and they usually do not find a job until they are out of school Nellie was born on October 20th, 1873 in Grey County, Ontario and the youngest of six children and was brung up by a strict Scottish Presbyterian mother and an Irish Methodist father. Nellie had a long important life that changed the world forever but then dying sometime in 1951 when she was seventy-seven. Nellie and her family moved to Manitoba to find a better farmland and homesteaded near Wawanesa in 1880. In 1889 she went to Winnipeg to study to get her teaching degree. (www.bcarchives.gov.bc.ca). The Topic:
Women's Suffrage Movement Easier - Women's suffrage is the right of women to vote. The women's suffrage movement was the struggle to gain the same right to vote as men. Harder - With a few exceptions, women today have the same voting rights as men. However, this was not always the case. During US colonial times, voting was limited to adult males who owned property. Many people thought that property owners had the strongest interest in good government; therefore, they were the best qualified to make decisions. In the early nineteenth century, changing social conditions and the idea of equality led to the beginning of the woman suffrage movement. By then, more women were receiving education. Women also began to participate in reform movements and take increased interest in politics. Women and men began to question why women were not also allowed to vote. Supporters of this drive were called suffragists.
