W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM W. Somerset Maugham
(1874–1965)— Born in Paris, Maugham became an orphan at age ten and moved shortly afterwards to London . He studied at Cantebury and Heidelberg before returning to London to become a surgeon. With the minor success of his first novel, Liza of Lambeth , he turned to writing full time. Though best known for his short stories, particularly Rain , originally published in the collection The Trembling of a Leaf (1921), he also experienced success as a novelist and playwright. In 1908 four of his plays ran simultaneously in London theaters. Among his most successful plays were The Moon and Sixpence The Circle East of Suez (1922), and Cakes and Ale (1930). His 1915 semi-autobiographical novel Of Human Bondage was considered by critics and the author himself to be his best work. Maugham said of his work: “I write stories about people who have some singularity of character which suggests to me that they may be capable of behaving in such a way … that I can make use of, or about people who by some accident or another, accident of temperament, accident of environment, have been involved in unusual contingencies.” Though his mind began to slip in his later years, Maugham continued writing until his death in 1965. Maugham, William Somerset (1874-1965) Frightened by the Oscar Wilde trial, Somerset Maugham avoided treating homosexual themes and characters in his novels and plays. Maugham was an extremely productive writer who both mastered and gained popular success with novels, short stories, and plays. In 1908, he had four plays running simultaneously on the London stage; before he died, his novel Of Human Bondage (1915) had sold over ten million copies; and from Orientations (1899) to Creatures of Circumstances (1947), he was regarded as a master of the well-made short story, especially for stories such as "Rain" and "The Colonel's Lady." Nevertheless, when assessing his long career, Maugham declared that he was "in the very first row of the second-rate." Maugham was born in Paris, the son of the solicitor and legal adviser to the British embassy. Orphaned by the age of ten, he was sent to Whitstable, Kent, to be cared for by his uncle. He was educated at King's School, Canterbury, which later received his books, some manuscripts, an endowment, and his ashes; at Heidelberg University, where he did not take a degree; and St. Thomas's Hospital, London. In 1897, he received his medical MRCS and LRCP, but the success of his first novel

Perfection is what American women expect to find in their husbands ... but English women only hope to find in their butlers. There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are. I made up my mind long ago that life was too short to do anything for myself that I could pay others to do for me. Death is a very dull, dreary affair, and my advice to you is to have nothing whatever to do with it. The trouble with young writers is that they are all in their sixties.
