Despite his popularity, Maugham did not gain serious recognition. This was expressed in his autobiography THE SUMMING UP (1938), that he stood 'in the very first row of the second-raters'. Maugham's skill in handling plot has been compared by critics in the manner of Guy de Maupassant . In many novels the surroundings are international and the stories are told in clear, economical style with cynical or resigned undertone. "I have never pretended to be anything but a story teller. It has amused me to tell stories and I have told a great many. It is a misfortune for me that the telling of a story just for the sake of the story is not an activity that is in favor with the intelligentsia. In endeavor to bear my misfortunes with fortitude." (from Creatures of Circumstance W. Somerset Maugham was born in Paris as the sixth and youngest son of the solicitor to the British embassy. He learned French as his native tongue. At the age of 10 Maugham was orphaned and sent to England to live with his uncle, the vicar of Whitstable. Educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University, Maugham then studied six years medicine in London. He qualified in 1897 as doctor from St. Thomas' medical school but abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays.

W. Somerset Maugham Quotes
It is an illusion that youth is happy, an illusion of those who have lost it. The unfortunate thing about this world is that good habits are so much easier to give up than bad ones. People ask for criticism, but they only want praise. Dying is a very dull, dreary affair. And my advice to you is to have nothing whatever to do with it. Imagination grows by exercise, and contrary to common belief, is more powerful in the mature than in the young. It's a funny think about life; if you refuse to accept anything but the best, you very often get it. Only a mediocre person is always at his best. The common idea that success spoils people by making them vain, egotistic, and self-complacent is erroneous; on the contrary it makes them, for the most part, humble, tolerant, and kind. Failure makes people bitter and cruel. Love is only the dirty trick played on us to achieve continuation of the species. The ability to quote is a serviceable substitute for wit. It wasn't until quite late in life that I discovered how easy it is to say 'I don't know'. There is only one thing about which I am certain, and that is there is very little about which one can be certain.

W. Somerset Maugham (1874-1965)
W(illiam) Somerset Maugham, playwright, novelist and short story writer was born of British parents in Paris in 1874. Brought up originally in France, Maugham lost his mother at the age of eight. Two years later his father died of cancer and Maugham the orphan was moved to Kent, where he boarded at King's School, Canterbury. His holidays were spent with an uncle in Whitstable. About this time Maugham developed the stammer which made it difficult for him to make relationships and contributed to his shy and introverted manner. Maugham studied philosophy and literature at Heidelberg University and then in London he qualified as a surgeon at St. Thomas's Hospital. Of Human Bondage (1915) is an autobiographical novel describing his unhappiness and anxiety in early life and recounting his experiences as a medical student. Maugham served in the British Intelligence Service in World Wars I and II. In 1914 he was part of a Red Cross unit in France, later acting as a secret agent in Geneva. In Petrograd he was involved in trying to prevent the outbreak of the Russian Revolution. These experiences are related in Ashenden, or the British Agent

Somerset Maugham lived a long time; almost one hundred years. He was young in Queen Victoria's England, when the sun never set on the British Empire, Europe was the center of the civilized world, and the horse drawn carriage was the preferred mode of transportation. He lived to see the collapse of the great colonial empires, the rise of America, and to fly in an airplane. He seems to have taken it all in with his usual phlegmatic demeanor. Educated at King's School, Canterbury, and Heidelberg University in Germany, Maugham then studied six years medicine in London. He qualified in 1897 as a doctor from St. Thomas' medical school.
He abandoned medicine after the success of his first novels and plays but he studied the craft of writing as assiduously as he had medicine, often writing out passages of other novelists. He never owned a typewriter but wrote everything by hand. He eventually developed a habit of writing four hours each morning.

OF HUMAN BONDAGE BY W. SOMERSET MAUGHAM
I
The day broke gray and dull. The clouds hung heavily, and there was a rawness in the air that suggested snow. A woman servant came into a room in which a child was sleeping and drew the curtains. She glanced mechanically at the house opposite, a stucco house with a portico, and went to the child’s bed. “Wake up, Philip,” she said.

November 23 ~  Funny Thing About Life Heart Behind the Hero
"It is a funny t h i n g about life ; if you r e f u s e to accept anything but the b e s t you very often get it." ~ W. Somerset Maugham Versatile British novelist William Somerset Maugham (1874-1965) created tales of suspense and irony. With over 20 novels, 25 plays, and 100 short stories, he celebrated the best in storytelling and creativity Imagination grows by exercise," he said. "Contrary to common belief, is more powerful in the mature than in the young." Orphaned at age 10, Maugham was a shy child who spoke with a stutter and used his lonely childhood experiences to create stories with first-person narration. With precision, he wrote his first novel, Liza of Lambeth, during his final year in medical school. Maugham was known for his clear, clean writing style. George Orwell called Maugham his biggest influence and said he"admired (Maugham) immensely for his power of telling a story straightforwardly and without frills." "To write simply is as difficult as to be good," Maugham said. "There are three rules for writing a novel. Unfortunately, no one knows what they are."

Maugham, W. Somerset
English author, whose novels and short stories are characterized by great narrative facility, simplicity of style, and a disillusioned and ironic point of view.
Maugham was born in Paris and studied medicine at the University of Heidelberg and at Saint Thomas's Hospital, London. His partially autobiographical novel Of Human Bondage (1915) is generally acknowledged as his masterpiece and is one of the best realistic English novels of the early 20th century. The Moon and Sixpence (1919) is a story of the conflict between the artist and conventional society, based on the life of the French painter Paul Gauguin ; other novels are The Painted Veil (1925), Cakes and Ale (1930), Christmas Holiday (1939), The Hour Before the Dawn (1942), The Razor's Edge (1944), and Cataline: A Romance (1948). Among the collections of his short stories are The Trembling of a Leaf (1921), which includes "Miss Thompson" later dramatized as Rain; Ashenden: or The British Agent (1928); First Person Singular (1931); Ah King (1933); and Quartet (1948). He also wrote satiric comedies-The Circle (1921) and Our Betters (1923)-the melodrama East of Suez (1922), essays, and two autobiographies.

19. The Book
William Somerset Maugham (18741965). Chronology. JAN. 25, 1874. W Somerset Maughamwas born in the British Embassy in Paris. 1882. Mother died of tuberculosis.
http://curator.hotbox.ru/maugham.html
William Somerset Maugham ( Some quotations: To the lover waiting for his love, no sound is sadder than the tardy striking of the hours. It is but seldom that a man loves one and for all; it may only show that his sexual instincts are not very strong. Human sorrow is like a child born in the night who sees the sun rise and thinks that yesterday never existed. The writer must be playful and serious at the same time. When you are in love what use it is to you if all you get in return is kindness, friendship, affection ? It is Dead Sea fruit that sticks in your throat. People will sometimes forgive you the good you have done them, but seldom the harm they have done you. Death is a very dull, dreary affair, and my advice to you is to have nothing whatsoever to do with it. People ask for criticism, but they only want praise. The unfortunate thing about this world is that the good habits are much easier to give up than the bad ones. Art for art's sake makes no more sense than gin for gin's sake. There are two good things in life - freedom of thought and freedom of action.
