Edgar Lee Masters
A Biography Herbert K. Russell
This is the first book-length biography of Edgar Lee Masters, author of the celebrated Spoon River Anthology, one of the most widely read and discussed volumes of poetry ever written in America. Like Carl Sandburg, Vachel Lindsay, and the other "prairie poets," Masters (1868-1950) left his small midwestern hometown for Chicago in the hope of becoming a successful writer. He was a family man and a partner in Clarence Darrow's Chicago law firmwriting on the sidewhen, at the age of forty-six, his boyhood dream of literary success suddenly came true. His Spoon River Anthology, a series of monologues spoken by the dead in a midwestern cemetery, became a literary sensation overnight. Castigated by some critics for its "shredded prose" and offensive subject matter, Spoon River Anthology was hailed by others as a watershed in American poetry: a direct, unsentimental, realistic treatment of the blood, grit, and pathos of life in middle America. It was Masters's only lasting success. Herbert K. Russell, acknowledged as the foremost authority on Masters, brilliantly conveys the internal contradictions that drove Masters throughout his life and kept the happiness, love, security, and success he dreamed of always out of reach. Masters was one of America's most prolific authors, publishing fifty-three books during his lifetime; yet only one of his works afforded him lasting recognition. He was a successful Chicago lawyer yet he detested the practice of law and always regarded it as an obstacle to his writing. He married twice but constantly pursued other women, seeking an elusive combination of intellectual compatibility, sexual fireworks, and uncritical admiration.

REH to H.P. Lovecraft, ca. February 1931: "My antipathy for Rome is one of those things I can't explain myself. Certainly it isn't based on any early reading, because some of that consisted of MacCauley's 'Lays of Ancient Rome' from which flag-waving lines I should have drawn some Roman patriotism, it seems. At an early age I memorized most of those verses, but in reciting, changed them to suit myself and substituted Celtic names for the Roman ones, and changed the settings from Italy to the British Isles!" Prior to their removal and near annihilation by the white man, the Sauk were one of the proudest and most advanced tribes on the North American continent. Iola Fuller succeeds in re-creating the daily life at Saukenuk, the village shared by the Sauk and Fox nations, during the twelve years prior to the Black Hawk War. She deals kindly with her subjects, writing sympathetically of Chief Black Hawk and his unflagging efforts to remain at peace with the white man and still maintain dominion over the land of his fathers. She gives a factual account of the Black Hawk War, in which a small band of determined Indians under the leadership of Black Hawk wage guerrilla warfare in a futile effort to save their homes. She writes of the faith of the Indians which leads them to believe in the coming of a kind of Messiah who will deliver them from the white man's oppression. The success of The Shining Trail lies in the author's genuine understanding and sympathy for the Indian and the intimacy with which she tells his story.

The writers reflect the rich diversity of Illinois literature, ranging from Edna Ferber and Ernest Hemingway to Studs Terkel and Gwendolyn Brooks. They include poets, such as Edgar Lee Masters; former newspaper reporters, such as Ben Hecht; contemporary writers, such as Saul Bellow; a Sauk Indian, Black Hawk; and a United States President, Abraham Lincoln. There are those who brought social change, such as Jane Addams, whose book Twenty Years at Hull House , describes her life as founder of the Chicago-based social agency that was one of the first in the nation to care for the indigent. There is Robinson native James Jones, whose novels From Here to Eternity The Front Page, that describes the halcyon days of Chicago journalism in the 1920s. There is the futurist science-fiction works of Waukegan’s Ray Bradbury and the "big shoulder" of Galesburg’s Carl Sandburg. Regardless of the type of writing each engaged, they all have a place in American literature and Illinois history.
