"Sea-Fever"
I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.
I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over. By John Masefield (English Poet Laureate, 1930-1967.)

THE JOHN MASEFIELD SOCIETY - JOHN MASEFIELD (1878-1967): A BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH - When I am buried, all my thoughts and acts
Will be reduced to lists of dates and facts First printed in 1912, Masefield’s poem ‘Biography’ demonstrates unease with the genre. His own fragmentary autobiographical works have an intriguing reticence and when Sanford Sternlicht admitted difficulty in writing the biographical introduction to his critical study ( John Masefield , Twayne Publishers, 1977) he was highlighting the lack of factual information available. This situation changed in the centenary year of Masefield’s birth when a biography was published with the support of the Masefield family and estate. Constance Babington Smith’s work ( John Masefield: A Life , Oxford University Press, 1978) must be regarded as definitive because of her access to family and friends. John Masefield was born on 1 June 1878 in Ledbury, Herefordshire. His childhood was idyllic and the beauty of the local countryside and a dreamy imagination led him to a Wordsworthian communion with Nature. Masefield’s ‘paradise’ was not to last; at an early age he was orphaned and entrusted to the guardianship of an aunt and uncle. The aunt viewed his love of reading with suspicion and, after a brief period at the King’s School Warwick, it was thought that the school-ship H.M.S.

Sonnets
Long long ago, when all the glittering earth
Was heaven itself, when drunkards in the street
Were like mazed kings shaking at giving birth
To acts of war that sickle men like wheat,
When the white clover opened Paradise
And God lived in a cottage up the brook,
Beauty, you lifted up my sleeping eyes
And filled my heart with longing with a look;
And allhe day I searched but could not find
The beautiful dark-eyed who touched me there,
Delight in her made trouble in my mind,
She was within all Naure, everywhere,
The breath I breathed, the brook, the flower, the grass,
Were her, her word, her beauty, all she was.
Night came again, but now I could not sleep.
The owls were watching in the yew, the mice
Gnawed at the wainscot; the mid dark was deep,
The death-watch knocked the dead man's summons thrice.
The cats upon the pointed housetops peered
About the chimneys, with lit eyes which saw

    John Masefield was born on June 1st 1878 in a house, 'The Knapp', which means a little hill dwarfed by higher ground. It had recently been built on the northern edge of Ledbury near to the Hereford and Gloucester Canal which was operational until rendered obsolete with the opening of the railway in the early 1880's. John's maternal grandparents were from Great Comberton near to Bredon Hill and the Avon in Worcestershire where his grandfather, Revd Charles Hubert Parker, was rector. Grandpa Parker had shown a talent for pen-and-ink drawings of churches during his youth as an Oxford undergraduate. He devoted himself to his parish for fifty-seven years where he helped to restore the church, putting up new cottages, and keeping up the schoolhouse . He had a great influence on John, manifesting itself in the biblical language and allusions that were to enter his writings later on. John maintained throughout his life that as a child he had lived in paradise. He often described places, people and events that filled his memory amongst the meadows, orchards, woodlands and hoplands of Herefordshire.

    Edward Harold Physick was born in Ealing on July 20 1878, the son of E.J. Physick the sculptor. Educated at Hitchin Grammar school and privately, in 1897 he became a clerk in the Indo-European Telegraph Company's office in Mincing Lane, London. Apart from an unhappy spell in the company's Manchester office, he remained there and continued to live with his family in London until the First World War, when he left, registered as a conscientious objector and became a schoolmaster for a short time. E.H. Physick's aim was always to devote himself entirely to scholarship and writing and this he eventually managed to do. His first book

    Présentation.
    Eléments biographiques. Analyse de l’œuvre. Bibliographie. ... Me contacter.
