Dialectical and Historical Materialism The tone and tendency of liberalism...is to attack the institutions of the
country under the name of reform and to make war on the manners
and customs of the people under the pretext of progress.
Benjamin Disraeli
Speech In London, June 24, 1872
Karl Marx (1818-1883) adapted the theory of Uniformitarianism, and the darwinist notion of the "survival of the fittest," to his theory of "class warfare." This is the theory of Dialectical and Historical Materialism (the logic of conflict dealing with only the material things of this world), wherein one society (the thesis) clashes with another society (the anti-thesis), and results in the formation of a third and "better" (the "building-up" process) society (the synthesis). Supposedly Communism would clash with Capitalism, and the result would be the perfect Socialist state. The average American now expects a "new secular order," or "New World Order," to appear through the efforts of the United Nations or a United Europe, not realizing that it is only another socialist and totalitarian scheme. Even Christians expect the New World Order to appear soon, courtesy of the Anti-christ.
In practice, such socialistic things as a "common purse" or "holding all things in common" can only work successfully among very small units of people, usually among only a few families. As a positive force in society Socialism is a failure. When people are not allowed personal ownership and reward for their labors, individual initiative disappears. If everyone is to receive an equal share from the common store, why would anyone want to work harder or produce more than his neighbor?

Mandel, Ernest, “Marx, Karl Heinrich,” The New Palgrave: A Dictionary of Economics , Vol. 3 (K to P), John Eatwell et al., eds. (Macmillan Press, 1987), pp. 367–383. Karl Marx was born on 5 May 1818, the son of the lawyer Heinrich Marx and Henriette Pressburg. His father was descended from an old family of Jewish rabbis, but was himself a liberal admirer of the Enlightenment and not religious. He converted to Protestantism a few years before Karl was born to escape restrictions still imposed upon Jews in Prussia. His mother was of Dutch-Jewish origin. Life and Work Karl Marx studied at the Friedrich-Wilhelm Gymnasium in Trier, and at the universities of Bonn and Berlin. His doctoral thesis, Differenz der demokritischen und epikurischen Naturphilosophie , was accepted at the University of Jena on 15 April 1841. In 1843 he married Jenny von Westphalen, daughter of Baron von Westphalen, a high Prussian government official. Marx’s university studies covered many fields, but centred around philosophy and religion. He frequented the circle of the more radical followers of the great philosopher Hegel, befriended one of their main representatives, Bruno Bauer, and was especially influenced by the publication in 1841 of Ludwig Feuerbach’s Das Wesen de Christentums (The Nature of Christianity). He had intended to teach philosophy at the university, but that quickly proved to be unrealistic. He then turned towards journalism, both to propagandize his ideas and to gain a livelihood. He became editor of the

The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it. All our inventions have endowed material forces with intellectual life, and degraded human life into a material force. The writer must earn money in order to be able to live and to write, but he must by no means live and write for the purpose of making money. A commodity appears at first sight an extremely obvious, trivial thing. But its analysis brings out that it is a very strange thing, abounding in metaphysical subtleties and theological niceties.

Karl Marx (1818-1883)
Marx was born in 1818 of Jewish parents in Trier, in what was then the Rhineland province of Prussia. His father was a successful liberal lawyer who had been baptised when his job was threatened by anti-Jewish laws. Marx studied philosophy, history and law at the universities of Bonn and Berlin and gained his PhD from the University of Jena. Disappointed in his hopes of an academic career because of his radicalism, he turned to journalism. He was briefly editor of the Rheinische Zeitung until it was suppressed by the Prussian censorship. In 1843 he moved to Paris where he began a lifelong friendship and collaboration with Frederick Engels. In Paris he started another radical journal with Arnold Ruge, but this too was soon suppressed and, in 1845, Marx was expelled from France and moved to Brussels. In 1847 Marx and Engels helped found the Communist League, for which they wrote the Communist Manifesto (1848). In 1848, a year of revolutionary upheaval throughout Europe, Marx was in Cologne where he again edited a radical newspaper. After the failure of the 1848 revolution, the paper was closed and Marx was expelled from Germany. He made his way eventually to London, where he settled in exile for the rest of his life. In London he lived with his family on the brink of poverty by occasional journalism and with financial assistance from Engels (who had by then become a partner in the family cotton firm in Manchester). Aided by the resources of the British Museum Library, he devoted himself to producing a systematic theory of capitalism, embodied in the volumes of his major work
