The factory was located in two buildings owned by W. R. Shope and the fire started in a small passageway between the buildings, according to the best evidence obtainable. Both buildings were of frame construction and the flames made rapid progress; in fact had made such a start by the time firemen arrived upon the scene that it was impossible to save the plant, and the efforts of the firemen were directed to keeping the fire from spreading to adjoining buildings. At the time of going to press it was impossible to get any figures on the loss sustained by several owners, but it was all insured. The burning of the plant will probably put an end to the skewer factory in Bellefonte.

The Shawnee are an almost forgotten Native American tribe, although their historical role in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was significant. I have created this site to provide some basic information about the Shawnee way of life and the history of the People. The Shawnee (or "Shawanwa", meaning "southerner") were the southernmost of the Algonquian tribes. They were a very migrant people, but their villages were found primarily in the Ohio (Skipakicipi) River Valley region, in the present-day states of Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, and Kentucky. The role of Shawnee men was to hunt game and protect the villages and the People. Shawnee women grew corn and other crops, built the family wegiwas (homes), and cared for the children. The Shawnee were a very religious people, and admired courage and strength above all else. The Shawnee were divided into five sects: The Chillicothe and Thawakila sects were in charge of political matters; the principal chief of the tribe must belong to one of these sects. The Mekoce sect was responsible for religious ceremonies. The

ROCKEFELLER SECURES VA HEALTH CARE SERVICES FOR VETERANS IN THE LOGAN COUNTY AREA
- New VA Outpatient Clinic to Open Soon
LOGAN Rockefeller has been pushing to get Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care into this area for some time, and in May, he personally took his concerns to Dr. Thomas Garthwaite, then VA's Acting Under Secretary for Health. "I am delighted that the VA responded to my request and is now ready to provide primary health care services to the veterans living in and around Logan," said Rockefeller. "Too many veterans living in that part of our state have had to travel too far for their VA medical care. Providing veterans the quality health care they deserve means making sure those services are close and convenient. With our veteran population aging, it becomes even more critical to bring VA medical care closer to the communities where our veterans live." As partner with the Department of Family and Community Health at Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, VA will be providing health care services at the family practice office of Logan physician, Dr. Harry Fortner. Veterans currently enrolled with the Huntington VA Medical Center will be given priority to transfer their primary care to the new clinic through a process that will begin in October.

Craig is undertaking studies of the kerogen in and around the 1640 Ma McArthur River hydrothermal system to look for changes related to ore fluid and organic matter interaction. The main themes are: 1. Development of a new methodology for determining the organic geochemistry of organic matter in hydrothermal mineral deposits. 2. Establish a relationship between thermal alteration/ degree of oxidation and chemical structure of organic matter in hydrothermal deposits. 3. Determine the role of microbes and organic matter in ore formation.

Peter Rosin, 1914. Camp Logan was an Illinois National Guard Training Facility that operated between 1892 and the early 1970s. The National Guard, in its present state, is a voluntary military organization dedicated to providing protection to civilians during an emergency within the state and augmenting the US Army during crises of greater magnitude. The training provided at Camp Logan covered handling of small weapons, tactical maneuvers, and other military tasks, but it especially excelled at promoting rifle marksmanship. Historically, the Illinois National Guard grew out of the Illinois Territorial Militia, which provided the manpower against the British and their Indian allies during the War of 1812. After Illinois gained statehood in 1818, the Illinois Militia was formed by state law. Under this act all free white men between ages 18 and 45 were required to join the militia and provide the basic materials for defending the state. This militia was reserved for emergencies and seldom trained.
