TAUSCHER URGES PASSAGE OF MARRIAGE PENALTY TAX CUT CALLS GOP TACTICS DESTINED FOR FAILURE Washington, DC Below is the statement that Rep. Tauscher gave on the House Floor this morning in opposition to the measure. Treasury Secretary Lawrence Summers had written a letter to the House Republicans urging them to consider the measure under regular order. Rep. Tauscher will support ending the marriage tax penalty as part of this year’s budget: " Mr. Speaker, as a supporter of eliminating the Marriage Penalty Tax, I am disappointed in the way the Republican leadership has brought this issue to the Floor. It’s like Ronald Reagan said more than a decade ago, ‘here they go again.’ Only this Republican leadership can take a consensus issue such as the Marriage Penalty Tax Cut and politicize it to the point of failure. "It is irresponsible for the Republican leadership to bring this kind of tax cut measure to the Floor outside of the context of the entire budget. If we are to be fiscally responsible and maintain our balanced budget and the era of surpluses, we cannot make these kinds of decisions in a vacuum.

Wedding Belles: Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche
Actresses Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche have said they may tie the knot in Vermont if same-sex marriage is legalised in the state. The famous lesbian couple were speaking in Vermont, where the Supreme Court is considering a landmark case filed by three same-sex couples who want to marry. "There is no one who is keeping their fingers crossed more than us. We'd love to celebrate that with you," Heche told a packed gym at the University of Vermont. The couple have been together for nearly three years and made headlines last year when they announced they were leaving Hollywood for a more lesbian-friendly community. Abba hit proves a winner with fans Abba fans have voted The Winner Takes It All as their favourite-ever song by the legendary pop group. More than 10,000 people voted in the Channel 5 poll via telephone and the Internet during the TV station's weekend celebration of the band. The Winner Takes It All grabbed almost 11% of the vote, with Dancing Queen second and Thank You For The Music third.

Marital commitment now has different ring ELLEN GOODMAN; The Boston Globe BOSTON - Let's just say that the man selling newspapers at the entrance of the subway station hadn't yet caught the spirit of the day. Marriage comes with three rings, he was telling a customer: "engagement ring, wedding ring, suffering." But the headline in the paper he was hawking had a different take on this historic moment. It announced simply: "FREE TO MARRY." Monday was the first day in which gay couples in Massachusetts could tie the legal knot. "Free to marry" might sound like a contradiction in terms - liberated to be committed? - but not among those lined up to get licenses. Men and men, women and women formed an ad hoc reception line snaking out of Boston City Hall as the media walked up and down with pens and cameras. Rebecca Priest and Madonna Berry wanted to tell me they had met through a newspaper personals ad eight years ago - "fortysomething, independent, loves the movies." Mark Strickland and Tread Pearson wanted to be sure that I knew they were being married by a Methodist minister.

// Included to access cookie for webpub email feature Hello, welcome to my home page! I was born and reared on Ocracoke Island. I left Ocracoke in 1963 and returned there to live in 1983. After fighting a loosing battle to preserve Ocracoke, I decided "you can't go home again" and gave up in 1996 and moved to Atlantic, NC. I chose Atlantic because it is one of the few places that has not been commercialized and over developed. My father was from Harkers Island and both of my daughters live in Carteret County so I am close to my family and still a short distance from Portsmouth Island, on which I have one of the leased historical homes through Cape Lookout National Seashore, my favorite place in the whole world.
I am working on names in Eastern North Carolina, Carteret, Craven, and Hyde Counties. I would like to share information with descendants of those that left Carteret County on a wagon train, bound for Ala. in 1823. Also would like to share information with anyone working on names of Portsmouth or Ocracoke Island, NC

e-mail: peter-alexander@uiowa.edu Release: April 12, 2002 UI Martha-Ellen Tye Opera Theater presents Mozart's 'Marriage of Figaro' April 26, 28 The Martha-Ellen Tye Opera Theater at the University of Iowa School of Music will present one of the great operas of the 18th century, Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro," in performances at 8 p.m. Friday, April 26 and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 28 in the UI Hancher Auditorium. The opera will be sung in English. Sally Stunkel will direct a cast of UI students, and William LaRue Jones will conduct the University Symphony. The first of three operas Mozart wrote on a text by the poet Lorenzo Da Ponte, "The Marriage of Figaro" was first performed May 1, 1786 in Vienna. It was very successful, with nine performances in the first year and 26 more when it was revived in 1789-90. It was even more popular in Prague, leading to the commission for Mozart's second opera with Da Ponte, "Don Giovanni." The subject of "The Marriage of Figaro" was carefully chosen by Mozart and Da Ponte. An opera on that subject was bound to attract a lot of attention for two reasons: It was based on a play by the French playwright Beaumarchais that had created a sensation in Europe and had quickly been banned because of its revolutionary sentiments; and an opera based on the preceding Beaumarchais play about the same characters, "The Barber of Seville," was popular throughout Europe in a setting by the Italian composer Paisiello.
