Ellen White and the Negro Race
Forbids Interracial Marriage
"But there is an objection to the marriage of the white race with the black. All should consider that they have no right to entail upon their offspring that which will place them at a disadvantage; they have no right to give them as a birthright a condition which would subject them to a life of humiliation. The children of these mixed marriages have a feeling of bitterness toward the parents who have given them this lifelong inheritance. For this reason, if there were no other, there should be no intermarriage between the white and the colored race ."Manuscript 7, 1896 ( Selected Messages Book 2, page 343, paragraph 2). "In reply to inquiries regarding the advisability of intermarriage between Christian young people of the white and black races, I will say that in my earlier experience this question was brought before me, and the light given me of the Lord was that this step should not be taken ; for it is sure to create controversy and confusion. I have always had the same counsel to give.

BOSTON Now that we've arrived at the wedding, can we take a minute to describe how the laws walked us down this aisle? After all, the laws emerged from two different backgrounds and went down two separate paths. Then they came together before the justice of the peace, as groom and groom, bride and bride. On Tuesday, the Massachusetts high court ruled that gay couples have the right to marry. In the same decision, the justices redefined both gay rights and marriage. And yet for all the hoorays and all the boos, the decision may be as evolutionary as it is historic. Consider first the path of gay rights. For generations, the state labeled some lovers as criminals. When the last laws against sodomy finally fell this year, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia dissented. He argued that if moral disapproval wasn't enough to make sodomy illegal, nothing was: "What justification could there possibly be for denying the benefits of marriage to homosexual couples ... ?" He was bitter ... and right. The statutes that made homosexuals outlaws had to end before they could become in-laws.

Ellen Goodman: Same-sex couples reinforce the power of marriage
Ellen Goodman, Boston Globe May 19, 2004 BOSTON Let's just say that the man selling newspapers at the entrance of the Government Center subway station hadn't yet caught the spirit of the day. Marriage comes with three rings, he was telling a customer, "engagement ring, wedding ring, suffering." But the headline in the paper he was hawking had a different take on this historic moment. It announced simply: "FREE TO MARRY." Monday was the first day in which gay couples in Massachusetts could tie the legal knot. "Free to marry" may sound like a contradiction in terms liberated to be committed? but not among those lined up to get licenses. Men and men, women and women formed an ad hoc reception line snaking out of Boston City Hall as the media walked up and down with pens and cameras.

39. PBS - American Experience: Woodrow Wilson | Wilson- A Portrait
After Marriage, Ellen devoted herself to her family and to Woodrow s career, garnering private praise as her husband s intellectual equal.
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/wilson/portrait/wp_ellen.html
The future 28th first lady was born in Savannah, Georgia, on May 15, 1860, and lived most of her childhood in Rome, Georgia An extremely bright but shy girl, Ellie Lou, as she was known, read widely and even taught herself trigonometry. She graduated from Rome's Female College, and was recognized for her artistic ability. At eighteen, she won a bronze medal for freehand drawing at the Paris International Exposition, and launched a promising career as a professional artist. A few years later, when her mother died and her father suffered a severe mental breakdown, Ellen's plans for a career as an artist were derailed. Her siblings looked to Ellen as the head of their suddenly parentless household.
Woodrow Wilson
then a lawyer, came into Ellen's life when he visited Rome on business and they met at church. A cousin once said that if Ellen ever married, the man would probably be of no consequence, since smart men were rarely interested in smart women. But Woodrow Wilson was eager for the love and support of a strong woman like Ellen. Almost immediately engaged, the couple waited to marry for two years because both had decided to continue their studies. Woodrow entered graduate school, while Ellen, whose father had died while confined to a mental asylum, used money from her modest inheritance to restart her study of art at the innovative Art Students' League in New York City. After marriage, Ellen devoted herself to her family and to Woodrow's career, garnering private praise as her husband's intellectual equal.
