Biography of Marion F. Johnson My Dad Marion F. Johnson served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 10 June 1934 to 21 March 1935. He was in the 560th Company. He first saw service at Camp F-160, Gold Center, Clarkia, Idaho doing labor (B. R. Control) type of work which he explained was really keeping the brush under control to prevent forest fires. He has many pictures that he took while there and also had the thrill of going hunting for the first time where he bagged his first deer. Dad next saw service at Camp P-216, Las Posadas, Angwin, California doing Brush Gang work but he explained that they planted a lot of trees. His one wish was to go back some day and see how the trees had grown. Sadly he never made it. After giving it much thought he decided not to re-enlist and was discharged at Fort Knox, Kentucky the same place he was enrolled eight months earlier. My Dad really enjoyed his days in the CCC's. He saw new places, made life long friends and carried a lot of memories in his heart for years. His record of service is as follows: a. From 7-10-34 to 7-16-34, under War Dept. at Fort Knox, Kentucky

My father was a H-46 helicopter pilot in Vietnam, and after seeing this book in his bookshelf I had to read it. It is a very clear and uniform account of what helicopter pilots in Vietnam experienced. There are gripping stories of courage and carnage, and several scenes that stand out in my mind as testimony to the bravery, comraderie, and absolute horror that so many men have experienced in times of war. I loved the quotations throughout the book from all periods of history, but which really...

Warrior Culture of the U. S. Marines

Marines and those who are intrigued by Marines will be reading this. The book describes the Marines as the "brotherhood", to which I have nothing but agreement, yet although there are centuries of traditions (blood stripe from the battle that Marines lost 68+% of their men etc, ) the current day gunk that keeps Marines together is their ballsy "I'll do you one better" attitude and the way the peacetime sweating helps them prevent bleeding in war. I've mentioned it before, yet it must be menti...

USS SLC...Enlisted Navy... Marion Francis Jordan, S1c
Dec. 3rd, 2000
I am a nephew of Marion Francis Jordan, S1c. He served on board the USS Salt Lake City from November 26, 1942 until the end of the war. I have him listed as being in Div. 2 and Div. 6. I have a lot of material that I would like to donate to the web site. I have his day to day journal he wrote from mid April 1945 to Sept. 1945. I have photo copies of his actual personnel records. I have several photos of him, the ship and unidentified friends. I have his honorable discharge in the original envelope. I also have items that I might be able to photograph...like a complete set of blue jumpers that he wore aboard ship.
His life was short. After being sent home to Alabama and discharged after the war he immediately joined the merchant marine and took a ship to Europe. After he returned to the States in February 1946 he was killed on his way back to Alabama in a commercial airline crash in Virginia.
Thank You
David Upton...

Dear Diary
I am kind of played out today, I stood a mid watch on the "5 in" last night. Commenced firing "Star Shells" at the beach (Okinawa) at 2:00 A.M. secured at 4 A.M. Sunrise G. Q. manned my battle station and commenced firing at the beach again, only it was "8 in" H.C. this time. Secured approximately 8:00 and ate chow. Stood a 12-4 this P.M. firing the main battery in Cond. two at the beach. Boby [Bernard "Boby" (pronounced Bobee)] in on West-end of island and can't help worrying about him. Death of President, flying flag at half-mast.
April 15, 1945 Approx. 6:00
The latest news received aboard ship at 5:15 P.M. "the sixth Marines, furiously battling a platoon of Japs- mortar and machine gun fire."
My prayers are for God to take care of Boby, so he may live to return home to the ones who love and need him.
We just had another air raid; I don't know how many planes were shot down. That kind of thing has been so common in the last few months; it doesn't even interest me anymore.
A few minutes before Sunset G.Q. I could see the Japs open up a barrage of fire on the beach. We also took off empty powder containers before G.Q. loaded them on an LCM. I haven't made the wash room yet. Have to go and wash clothes, take a shower and shave after securing from G.Q. Then I have the 12 to secure watch in Turret. Mod. Condition two. The ship will fire Star shells again tonight. Sure glad I don't have the "5 in". watch. It's been a busy day for me since last night at 12, only the important things I have written here.
