    Meditations
It's at times like these that a reading of the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius (121-180), Roman emperor and philosopher, brings comfort. A brilliant general, he was engaged in wars on the northern and eastern frontiers of the empire throughout his reign. In his domestic policy, Marcus Aurelius was a champion of the poor, for whom he founded schools and hospitals and lessened the burden of taxes. He even sold his personal possessions to alleviate the effects of famine and plague within the empire. He also tried to humanise criminal law and the treatment of slaves by their masters As a philosopher he is remembered for his Meditations , a compendium of 12 books of moral precepts written while on his various campaigns. The work is an important formulation of the philosophy of Stoicism and reveals his belief that the moral life leads to tranquillity. It stresses the virtues of wisdom, justice, fortitude, and moderation. Consider: "Every moment think steadily as a Roman and a man to do what thou hast in hand with perfect and simple dignity, and feeling of affection, and freedom, and justice; and to give thyself relief from all other thoughts. And thou wilt give thyself relief, if thou doest every act of thy life as if it were the last, laying aside all carelessness and passionate aversion from the commands of reason, and all hypocrisy, and self-love, and discontent with the portion which has been given to thee. Thou seest how few the things are, that which if a man lays hold of, he is able to live a life which flows in quiet, and is like the existence of the gods; for the gods on their part will require nothing more from him who observes these things."

Its first printing appeared in English in 1634. During the reign of Marcus Aurelius the celebrated Pax Romana collapsed - perhaps this made the emperor the most believable of all Stoics. An important feature of the philosophy was that everything will recur: the whole universe becomes fire and then repeats itself. Constantly regard the universe as one living being, having one substance and one soul; and observe how all things have reference to one perception, the perception of this one living being; and how all things act with one movement; and how all things are the cooperating causes of all things which exist; observe too the continuous spinning of the thread and the contexture of the web. (from The Meditations Marcus Aurelius was born in Rome. He came from an aristocratic family long established in Spain. His father was Annius Verus. When only a small child, he attracted the attention of the Emperor Hadrian (r. 117-138) - a pedophile and his fellow-countryman. He was appointed by the Emperor to a priesthood in 129, and Hadrian also supervised his education, which was entrusted to the best professors of literature, rhetoric and philosophy of the time. From his early twenties he deserted his other studies for philosophy. The Emperor Antoninus, who succeeded Hadrian, adopted Marcus Aurelius as his son in 138. He treated Aurelius as a confidant and helper throughout his reign. Aurelius was admitted to the Senate, and then twice the consulship. In 147 he shared tribunician power with Antoninus. During this time he began composition of his

Roman Emperor, A.D. 161-180, born at Rome , 26 April, 121; died 17 March, 180. HIS EARLY LIFE (121-161) His father died while Marcus was yet a boy, and he was adopted by his grandfather, Annius Verus. In the first pages of his "Meditations" (I, i-xvii) he has left us an account, unique in antiquity, of his education by near relatives and by tutors of distinction; diligence, gratitude and hardiness seem to have been its chief characteristics. From his earliest years he enjoyed the friendship and patronage on the Emperor Hadrian , who bestowed on him the honour of the equestrian order when he was only six years old, made him a member of the Salian priesthood at eight, and compelled Antoninus Pius immediately after his own adoption to adopt as sons and heirs both the young Marcus and Ceionius Commodus, known later as the Emperor Lucius Verus. In honour of his adopted father he changed his name from M. Julius Aurelius Verus to M. Aurelius Antoninus. By the will of Hadrian he espoused Faustina, the daughter of

Marcus Aurelius u E E u s] Pronunciation Key Marcus Aurelius (Marcus Aelius Aurelius Antoninus), , Roman emperor, named originally Marcus Annius Verus. He was a nephew of Faustina, the wife of Antoninus Pius Commodus . Devoted to his duty and humanitarian in his conception of it, Marcus Aurelius was concerned with improving living conditions for the poor, particularly minors. He was always lenient with political criminals and tried to decrease the brutality at gladiatorial shows. He did, however, persecute the Christians, whom he regarded as natural enemies of the empire. His Meditations, available in several translations, expresses with great beauty and humanity a philosophy with a Stoic basis. The virtuous character of Marcus Aurelius is revealed in his letters to his tutor Fronto See biography by A. R. Birley (1966); study by J. H. Oliver (1970).

Aurelius, Marcus: Many of his fighting men knew Marcus hated war and tried to overthrow him. One of these conspirators was his friend, Avidius, who was also rumored to be having an affair with his wife, Faustina. Marcus learned of Avidius' plans and ordered his soldiers to find him and put down the rebellion. But Marcus did not want Avidius dead, he wanted to forgive him and restore the friendship they once shared. This desire reflects Marcus' following of the Stoic teaching, "Follow the pattern of your life; be true to your nature." For Marcus, this meant acting like a King, with firmness but not with malice or hatred. Marcus was never able to forgive Avidius, as he was killed, along with some of his followers. And eventually his wife died on a journey to the rebellious provinces Marcus wished to return to allegiance and friendship with Rome. In the end, Marcus died a Cynic, a philosopher doomed to be a king. He believed in peace and harmony, but practiced warfare, including the persecution of Christians because their teachings he saw as opposition to Rome, hence enemies of Rome. His contradiction in behavior and belief are justified by himself in his writing, "I, Marcus Aurelius, have never intentionally given pain to another." Marcus accepted his destiny to be emperor of Rome and detested his fortune because it prevented him from being good.
