By the standards of the 14th century, the writing style of the man who called himself Sir John Mandeville is so informal as to be nearly chummy: "He who wants to pass over the sea to Jerusalem, may go by many ways, both by sea and by land depending on the countries he comes from; many ways come to a single end. But do not think I shall tell of all the towns and cities and castles that men shall go by, for then I must make too long a tale of it." Historians remain skeptical as to whether the a...

The Bundahis is a Pahlavi text, meaning that it was written in the Middle Persian language. (300 B.C. - 950 A.D.) It is one of two great works about the ancient prophetic religion, Zoroastrianism, which was founded around the 12th century B.C. The work itself took an extraordinary amount of time to come together, having finally stopped growing in 1178. There are three subjects that the Bundahis covers; creation, the nature of earthly creatures, and the Kayanians (an ancient dynasty of Iran). According to the Bundahis , Gryphons were the largest and the first of all birds upon creation, and is associated with the bat. There are also remarks of "the griffin of three natures". These three natures, I can only presume to mean those of the eagle, lion, and the monstrous (chimerical). Bundahis Online Chapter 14 Chapter 19 ... Each click tips me about 3 cents. The Travels of Sir John Mandeville Posted on Friday 24 October 2003 to Story So Far Sir John Mandeville was an Early-Renaissance writer of travel tales, similar in style and content to his near-contemporary, Marco Polo. But history has judged the two quite differently: whereas Marco Polo has become a household word, synonymous with bold explorations, Mandeville has been largely forgotten. It was not always so. During his lifetime, and for a couple of centuries afterwards, Mandeville was the more famous of the two. A copy of Mandeville - but not Polo - was in the possession of Leonardo da Vinci. More telling, about 300 manuscripts (hand-written copies) of Mandeville survive, compared to only about 70 of Polo. So what accounts for these reversals of fortune?"

Bernard J. Shapero Rare Books
MANDEVILLE, Sir John The Voiage and Travaile ... which treateth of the way to Hierusalem; and of marvayles of Inde, with other ilands and countryes. Now publish'd entire from an original ms. in the Cotton Library. Woodman, London 1727 8vo., xvi, [8], 384, [7]pp., title printed in red and black, occasional light staining to inner blank margins, handsomely bound in modern brown half morocco gilt, spine lightly faded, top edge gilt, an excellent copy. Although the travels are imaginary, they are based upon traveller's tales extant in the fourteenth century and as such are of considerable interest. His travels take him through Turkey, Armenia, Persia, Amazonia, Arabia, etc., and he recounts the exotic tales of Prester John, Gog and Magog, and the men "whose heds do grow beneath their shoulders". This edition was first published in 1725. This item is listed on Bibliopoly by Bernard J. Shapero Rare Books ; click here for further details.
