Sir John Mandeville on Prester John
This text, attribuuted to "Sir John Mandeville" was written circa 1366, and presents a series of picturesque fables about the east. These stories fascinated Western Europeans, as did the more reliable [slightly!] stories of Marco Polo. One way of understanding Western interest in the rest of the world is to see the process by which interest became research, research became knowledge, and knowledge became power. By the time Europe was able to expand in the 16th century and later, it was far better equipped to understand, and if necessary undermine, other cultures than other cultures were to understand Europe. Questions:
1. Who is Prester John?
2. Do you think Mandeville really visited the East? Why or why not? Chapter XXX Of the Royal Estate of Prester John. And of a rich man that made a marvellous castle and cleped it Paradise and of his subtlety. This emperor, Prester John, holds full great land, and hath many full noble cities and good towns in his realm and many great diverse isles and large. For all the country of Ind is devised in isles for the great floods that come from Paradise, that depart all the land in many parts. And also in the sea he hath full many isles. And the best city in the Isle of Pentexoire is Nyse, that is a full royal city and a noble, and full rich. This Prester John hath under him many kings and many isles and many diverse folk of diverse conditions. And this land is full good and rich, but not so rich as is the land of the great Chan. For the merchants come not thither so commonly for to buy merchandises, as they do in the land of the great Chan, for it is too far to travel to. And on that other part, in the Isle of Cathay, men find all manner thing that is need to mancloths of gold, of silk, of spicery and all manner avoirdupois. And therefore, albeit that men have greater cheap in the Isle of Prester John, natheles, men dread the long way and the great perils m the sea in those parts.

THE TRAVELS OF SIR JOHN MANDEVILLE CHAPTER XX
OF THE EVIL CUSTOMS USED IN THE ISLE OF LAMARY. AND HOW THE EARTH AND THE SEA BE OF ROUND FORM AND SHAPE, BY PROOF OF THE STAR THAT IS CLEPT ANTARCTIC, THAT IS FIXED IN THE SOUTH
FROM that country go men by the sea ocean, and by many divers isles and by many countries that were too long for to tell of. And a fifty-two journeys from this land that I have spoken of, there is another land, that is full great, that men clepe Lamary. In that land is full great heat. And the custom there is such, that men and women go all naked. And they scorn when they see any strange folk going clothed. And they say, that God made Adam and Eve all naked, and that no man should shame him to shew him such as God made him, for nothing is foul that is of kindly nature. And they say, that they that be clothed be folk of another world, or they be folk that trow not in God. And they say, that they believe in God that formed the world, and that made Adam and Eve and all other things. And they wed there no wives, for all the women there be common and they forsake no man. And they say they sin if they

THE TRAVELS OF SIR JOHN MANDEVILLE CHAPTER XVI
OF THE LANDS OF ALBANIA AND OF LIBIA. OF THE WISHINGS FOR WATCHING OF THE SPARROW-HAWK; AND OF NOAH'S SHIP
NOW, sith I have told you before of the Holy Land and of that country about, and of many ways for to go to that land and to the Mount Sinai, and of Babylon the more and the less, and to other places that I have spoken before, now is time, if it like you, for to tell you of the marches and isles and diverse beasts, and of diverse folk beyond these marches.
For in those countries beyond be many diverse countries and many great kingdoms, that be departed by the four floods that come from paradise terrestrial. For Mesopotamia and the kingdom of Chaldea and Arabia be between the two rivers of Tigris and of Euphrates; and the kingdom of Media and of Persia be between the rivers of Nile and of Tigris; and the kingdom of Syria, whereof I have spoken before, and Palestine and Phoenicia be between Euphrates and the sea Mediterranean, the which sea dureth in length from Morocco, upon the sea of Spain, unto the Great Sea, so that it lasteth

Giles Milton
The Riddle and the Knight
: In Search of Sir John Mandeville, the World's Greatest Traveler
Many will find this to be a strange and/or unsatisfying book. I must admit to having felt that way at times while reading, but overall I think I "got it." In the days before the Discovery Channel , before National Geographic , before airplanes, before transoceanic travel, and even before a southern hemisphere or American continent was thought to exist people had a tough time gaining information about the world beyond their village, city, or country. Without a remote control in hand or a travel agent on the other side of a phone or desk it wasn't so easy to explore the planet and its inhabitants. So the genre of medieval travel writers was born. They wrote of their travels, or pretended travels, to the delight of all classes of people. Among them, perhaps the most famous became Sir John Mandeville's Travels of the 14th Century. Milton sets out to uncover the truth about Mandeville as many claim he never existed, never went to the places he talks about, or had some sort of hidden agenda in his popular and well read work. My theory is that when Milton finds out that there isn't much to find out about Mandeville that will startle or shock his readers (Milton doesn't even really prove that Mandeville ever existed IMO) he decides to take a different approach and do what Mandeville probably didn't dovisit the places (Mandeville claimed to visit) and write a real, detailed, interesting, and in many ways symbolic travelogue of his (Milton's) adventures. On this level he succeeds. Those that don't like the book probably don't get as absorbed in Milton's travels as they should. Instead they are looking for findings on Mandeville which just aren't as forthcoming.

    Acton, Lord
Acton was against "programmes of reaction" and thought that there could be great reliance on those institutions that came about as the result of slow evolution. That, ultimately, what was to be trusted were those "changes arising from special historical situations rather than from the minds of presumptuous men."

    Bastiat, Frédéric
Bastiat was of the view that those who subscribe to socialism subscribe to putting in place mechanisms, a philanthropic tyranny, which would but force the human race (a futile effort) to behave as the social engineers think the human race ought to behave as opposed to how it behaves by nature.
    Bentham, Jeremy
In Bentham's writings, politicians, beginning with those of the early 19th century, found legitimization in their most favoured activity: the business of making laws; and, they have been doing it in great quantities ever since. Bentham the business Bentham figured that laws should be socially useful and not merely reflect the status quo; he thought it to be a "sacred truth" that "the greatest happiness of the greatest number is the foundation of morals and legislation."

Sir John Mandeville: History Rewritten! (Again...)
By Kitty Werner as published in the Country Courier
Forget your history lessons about Vermont. Forget everything you learned about our state’s history. Samuel de Champlain? Why he was a fraud! According to John Mandeville XXIX, forget just about everything you have ever learned about history. Read The Further Travels of Sir John Mandeville and learn the truth. The book is a milestone in publishing history. Not only does it turn history on its head, but it is a sequel to one of the world’s all-time bestsellers The Travels of John Mandeville published in Norman French in 1356 and translated into all European languages shortly thereafter. According to Mandeville, he was the first to cross land to the Orient followed by Marco Polo. Historians, naturally, are still arguing the facts. The local news? Vermont’s history has been rewritten. No, Samuel de Champlain didn’t discover Vermont. Neither did the passing tribes wandering through. No, in fact, Vermont was discovered by none other than Sir John Mandeville, the famous British explorer in 1364 — even before Columbus thought of setting sail, much less before old Chris was born. Just to get the record straight, it was following on his historic heels that Columbus, Champlain and the trappers and other ne’er-do-wells came. This, of course, according to author Mandeville himself.

The Travels of Sir John Mandeville
A splendid illuminated manuscript by a fifteenth century Bohemian master, The Travels of Sir John Mandeville presents 28 full-page miniatures that illustrate the popular and eventful story of Sir John's travels. Inspired by the text of the Travels, which is considered to be "the first romance of travel in modern times" and was the most widely read travel book of the Middle Ages, the miniatures offer a portrait of the personages, places, events, and myths encountered by Mandeville on his pilgramage through the exotic lands. Through their delicately beautiful rendering, the scenes center on the spheres of interest to all medieval Christians and the highlights of any medieval pilgramage.

L' aventura del cavaller Espèrcius , que acaba amb un final molt feliç, pot semblar un element inversemblant a la novel·la. És possible que el llibre no sigui el relat d'un viatge autèntic, sinó que hagi aprofitat notes d'altres autors, com
