THE TRAVELS OF SIR JOHN MANDEVILLE
THE PROLOGUE
For as much as the land beyond the sea, that is to say the Holy Land, that men call the Land of Promission or of Behest, passing all other lands, is the most worthy land, most excellent, and lady and sovereign of all other lands, and is blessed and hallowed of the precious body and blood of our Lord Jesu Christ; in the which land it liked him to take flesh and blood of the Virgin Mary, to environ that holy land with his blessed feet; and there he would of his blessedness enombre him in the said blessed and glorious Virgin Mary, and become man, and work many miracles, and preach and teach the faith and the law of Christian men unto his children; and there it liked him to suffer many reprovings and scorns for us; and he that was king of heaven, of air, of earth, of sea and of all things that be contained in them, would all only be clept king of that land, when he said, Rex sum Judeorum Virtus rerum in medio consistit See now, how dear he bought man, that he made after his own image, and how dear he again-bought us, for the great love that he had to us, and we never deserved it to him. For more precious chattel ne greater ransom ne might he put for us, than his blessed body, his precious blood, and his holy life, that he thralled for us; and all he offered for us that never did sin.

Jean de Mandeville
(MAUNDEVILLE, MONTEVILLA) The author of a book of travels much read in the Middle Ages Mohammedan is taken from the work "De statu Saracenarum" (1273) of the Dominican William of Tripolis. His account of the Armenians, Persians, Turks, etc., is borrowed from the "Historia orientalis" of Hayton, the former Prince of Armenia and later Abbot of Poitiers. For the country of the Tatars and China he made use almost word for word of the "Deseriptio orientalium" of the Franciscan Odoric of Pordenone, and in parts of the "Historia Mongolorum" of the Franciscan John of Plano Carpini. Apart from books of travels he plagiarised from works of a general nature, the old authors Pliny, Solinus, Josephus Flavius (Breslau, 1840); NICHOLSON in The Academy , 11 Nov., 1876, and 12 February, 1881; NICHOLSON AND YULE in Encycl. Travels of Sir John Mandeville > Customer Review #1: anarchy and imagination

This is a fourteenth-century travel book telling us of the English "Sir" John Mandevilles real or imagined adventures in the East. The first part deals with the land of Egypt and the second with "the lands beyond" -. But did he actually ever leave England Did this Knighted author actually exist? Was he French? Well never know, but this volume is a thorough compendium of medieval mythic lore, which he artfully blends in collage-form (very much in the fashion of the allegedly "post-modern" writing), which would be a great success throughout Europe for centuries to come. One of these pleased readers would be Christopher Columbus, who here fed his imagination on the passion for distant travels! Together with this book I recommend the popular VOYAGE OF ST BRENDAN by Benedeiz, an earlier, twelfth-century text about the adventures of an Irish monk who never got tired of looking for fantastic islands on his tiny boat. The anarchy and imagination of the Middle-Ages always seems more fantastic when we read the original medieval authors directly.

The Riddle and the Knight: In Search of Sir John Mandeville, the Worlds Greatest Traveller > Customer Review #1: A trip worth taking...

A fascinating read! The satisfaction comes not in finally putting to rest the historical debate whether Sir John Mandeville ever made his epic pilgrimmage but rather in going along with Milton as he makes his journey. Settle into your favorite armchair and take off on a most engaging travel narrative. Along the way you will decide for yourself the truth about Sir Johns narrative, which is exactly the way all such quests should be pursued.

The Riddle and the Knight : In Search of Sir John Mandeville , the World's Greatest Traveler
    , by Giles Milton
    Hardcover - 230 pages
    First Edition, October 2001
Published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux
ISBN 0-374-24997-0 / 0374249970 In 1322, Sir John Mandeville, the most popular writer in England, who later influenced Shakespeare, Milton and Keats, announced that he was leaving immediately on a journey to find the holy city of Jerusalem. The famous knight didn't return to England until 1356. He reported that, during his 34 years of exploration, he had visited Jerusalem, then India, China and Tibet, and then Java and Sumatra. Was his claim accurate, or a fabricated boast? British historical writer Giles Milton set out recently to do the detective work to verify or falsify Mandeville's reports. "If archaeologists can unravel the lifestyle of Palaeolithic man from a couple of teeth and the odd jawbone, I felt sure I could learn something about Sir John from the sixty-one leaves of vellum and the handful of documents that have survived the centuries."

But fast beside that isle, for to pass by sea, is a great isle and a great country that men clepe [call] Java. And it is nigh two thousand mile in circuit. And the king of that country is a full great lord and a rich and a mighty, and hath under him seven other kings of seven other isles about him. This is full well inhabited, and full well manned. There grow all manner of spicery, more plenteously than in any other country, as of ginger, cloves-gilofre, canell, seedwall, nutmegs and maces. And wit well, that the nutmeg beareth the maces; for right as the nut of the hazel hath an husk without, that the nut is closed in till it ripe and that after falleth out, right so it is of the nutmeg and of the maces. Many other spices and many other goods grow in that isle. For of all things is there plenty, save only wine. But there is gold and silver, great plenty. The king of this isle is a full great lord and a mighty, and hath under him fifty-four great isles that give tribute to him. and in every [and each] of these isles is a king crowned; and all be obeissant to that king. And he hath in those isles many diverse folk.
