Sir Thomas Malory Sir Thomas Malory or Maleore of Newbold Revell in Warwickshire was born in the first quarter of the fifteenth century. A member of the gentry, he became a soldier in the service of Richard Beauchamp, Earl of Warwick, with whom he fought in the siege of Calais in 1436. In records of the period he is accused of various crimes including armed robbery, attempted murder, and rape and he is said to have executed several dramatic escapes from prison. As in King Arthur's time when post-Roman Britain was in a state of fierce tribal war, he lived in an age of great unrest. Europe was still recovering from the Black Plague and a century of war. In England, two powerful families fought for the throne. Although he may have been a scoundrel, Malory was also, it seems clear, a man of ideals who believed in courage and loyalty, and who mourned the passing of chivalry. Incarcerated for long periods, he had many hours to fill his imagination with French romances and tales of chivalry, volumes of which were readily at hand. It is thought that Le Morte d'Arthur was written during his imprisonment.

King Arthur the Real Story

From: trox1

In 1469, when Sir Thomas Malory wrote Le Morte d'Arthur (The Death of Arthur), he might have engaged in the only conventional impulse of his life. At the time that Malory wrote his book, he was in prisonpossibly for the eighth time.
As many as six Sir Thomas Malorys lived when the book was written, but the scholarly consensus is that the author of Le Morte was a soldier and a politician. He was jailed repeatedly, getting in trouble for a range of offenses, including: debt, attempting to ambush the Duke of Buckingham, insulting and stealing from a clergyman, adultery, extortion, and cattle-theft. Malory even managed to escape from prisontwice. Eventually, Malory joined a rebellion against the throne. When it failed, an infuriated King Edward IV refused to include Malory in a general pardon. Malory died in prison in 1471, where he finished the book that made his name.
In Le Morte d'Arthur, Malory collected the hundreds of popular tales about King Arthur and his knights. The job was enormous, and Malory collected his materials carefully, adding his own narrative where necessary. He divided the story into three parts: the adventures of Arthur and his knights, the story of the Holy Grail, and the downfall of the kingdom.

Thus, for instance, Gabrielle D Annunzio (18631938) was a contemporaryof Flannery O Connor (1935-1964), but not of Thomas Malory (d. 1471).
http://www.math.grin.edu/courses/Scheme/fall-1997/exercise-2.html
Let's say that two authors were contemporaries just in case both of them were born before either of them died. Thus, for instance, Gabrielle D'Annunzio (1863-1938) was a contemporary of Flannery O'Connor (1935-1964), but not of Thomas Malory (d. 1471). In this exercise, you will design, write, and test a Scheme procedure named contemporaries that takes information about an author (in the form of a three-element list comprising the author's surname, year of birth, and year of death), searches through a database for contemporaries of that author, and displays the surnames and pseudonyms of any contemporaries that it finds. Here is what a typical interaction with this procedure should look like. The user wishes to see a list of the contemporaries of Francis Bacon (1561-1626). Here is a modest database containing the surnames or pseudonyms of various authors and their dates of birth and death. Again, each surname is given as a Scheme string literal and each date as a Scheme integer, and these three data about each author are assembled into a list. The database is a list of such three-element lists and is named list-of-authors . You may include this definition in your program. I am indebted to The World almanac and book of facts: 1996 (Mahwah, New Jersey: World Almanac Books, 1995), pp. 357-360, for this collection of data.

It is believed that he was knighted in and entered the British Parliament representing Warwickshire in In , it appears that he turned towards a life of crime, being accused of murder, robbery, stealing, poaching, and rape.
