Visitors Since Aug. 04, 1997 ! May 30 2004 Annual Meeting Notice Download November 2003 Macphail Newsletter in PDF Format! Welcome to the Sir Andrew Macphail Foundation! Our purpose is to honour and acknowledge the contribution of Sir Andrew Macphail to our heritage. Our objectives are: To secure, maintain and manage the property known as the Macphail property so as to reflect the significance of the life of Sir Andrew Macphail. To promote public appreciation of Sir Andrew and the property. To develop educational and interpretive activities that reflect John Andrew Macphail's life, interests and times. To support the continued existence of the Macphail property as defined by the former Macphail provincial park boundaries. To complement the objectives of Orwell Corner Historic Village. To provide an organization through which people interested in and supportive of our purpose and objectives can participate. The Macphail Homestead was the home of one of P.E.I.'s most famous writers, physicians, and scholars, Sir Andrew Macphail. His father, William M(a)cphail was a schoolmaster, born in Nairn, Inverness, Scotland in 1830. The 2 year old William and his parents William Macphail and Mary MacPherson departed Fort William, Scotland in 1832, and after a shipwreck, settled in River John, Cape Breton. In 1844, they came to P.E.I. William, at 28 years of age, married Catherine Moore Smith on Newton, PEI. By this time William was himself a Schoolmaster, and to move closer to his work they then bought the 100 acre Fletcher farm in Orwell, and moved in on May 24th, 1864.

Most Reverend Francis C. Kelley
A native Islander, Bishop Francis C. Kelley attended St. Dunstan’s in the 1880s. During his time at the College, Francis Kelley established the literary journal, The Collegium, acting as business manager, and in 1886 he launched the College’s first student newspaper. Following College, Kelley was the Founder and president of the Catholic Church Extension Society of the United States of America, later holding the same position in Canada. He was consecrated Bishop of Oklahoma in 1924. As a great diplomat and writer, he integrated truth among the organized bigotry in the South. Among his many literary pieces was his well-read autobiography, A Bishop Jots It Down. Bishop Kelley was one of the College’s best ambassadors in Canada and the US. Jacob Gould Schurman

Schurman later became a professor at Acadia and Dalhousie Colleges, and eventually at Cornell University. It was there that he became President in 1892, turning the small private college of Cornell into a major university. Schurman was founder and editor of Philosophical Review, and author of The Ethical Import of Darwinism (1887) and other philosophical works. He later served as United States Ambassador to Greece, Montenegro, China, and Germany.

THE MASTER'S WIFE by Sir Andrew Macphail ROYALTIES DONATED TO THE SIR ANDREW MACPHAIL FOUNDATION Sir Andrew Macphail (1864–1938) was a native of Orwell, Prince Edward Island. A professor of the history of medicine at McGill University and a distinguished man-of-letters, Macphail has written a semi-autobiographical portrait of turn-of-the-century life in the rural community of Orwell, Prince Edward Island.
Originally published in 1939, The Master's Wife is a facsimile of the original 1939 edition, with its handsome type and historic illustrations.
"…this edition is a tribute to a man who, with Lucy Maud Montgomery and Milton Acorn, ranks at the summit among writers rooted in Prince Edward Island…. The text itself is testimony to a full life and evidence that the author never lost sight of who he was, the forces that had shaped him, and where he had come from. The Master's Wife is a tribute to his people and his place in their time."
— Dr. Ian Ross Robertson, from the Introduction to The Master's Wife " A classic of Canadian social history."
