In order to better understand the family relations ,which at times appear to be very confusing, certain extracts of the books written on or about the families have been incorporated into this web page. It is suggested that if you are interested in the history of that period of time, whether it be Scottish, English, Swedish, European, Canadian or for that matter American you should take the time to obtain the books in question and read them in their entirety.
One must realize also at this time in Scotland, the industrial revolution was beginning to run at full speed, many new inventions were coming into play that allowed adventuristic gentlemen, and others, some very unscrupulous, to embark on schemes that for some of them, made them very very rich . The majority of these families, while not belonging to the upper crust of Society, or to the Aristocracy, managed to find their own level of social interaction. Mingling, associating, and marrying amongst themselves, provided them with the ways and means of enforcing their status and increasing in most cases, their financial portfolios. What Royalty had accomplished in the past to ensure their own strong succession, was now being practiced several social levels below, by the rising industrial entrepreneurial class.

In the Spring of 2002 I visited East DeKalb Cemetery in the town of DeKalb to photograph and record the tombstones within the cemetery. Below is the inventory I developed during that visit. Pictures are available for most names (some didn't get saved on my camera and I'll have to retake them). When a picture is available, the name of the person will be 'clickable' to bring up the picture. NOTE: The only names recorded here are for people who had markers that I could find in the cemetery. It does not include any other people who might have been buried but for whom no marker could be found. All comments can be directed to Anne M. Cady
East DeKalb Cemetery is located on East DeKalb road, just west of Route 11 on the right-hand side of the road across from a school

    Biographical Note
The Biddle family papers preserve almost two hundred years of material related to this prominent Philadelphia family. William Biddle (1630-1712) and Sarah Kemp (1634-1709), were Quakers who emigrated to America from England in 1681 to escape religious persecution. They settled in Mount Hope, New Jersey, with their children, William and Sarah, the only two out of five to survive past infancy. William Biddle II (1669-1743) married Lydia Wardell of Shrewsbury, New Jersey, and together they had six children (see genealogical chart 1). Their first child, William (1698-1756), married Mary Scull (1709-1790) and together they had ten children, eight of whom survived past infancy. William Biddle relocated his family to Philadelphia, where the family still continues to prosper. The descendants of William Biddle and Mary Scull comprise the first major branch of the Philadelphia Biddles, and their collected papers are housed in Series I.
