THE DEVELOPMENT OF PAGANISM:
HISTORY, INFLUENCES AND CONTEXTS, 1880-2002

'A longing for the wood-world at night': the Influence of the Literature of the Occult Revival on Modern Paganism
Nick Freeman, Department of English, University of the West of England For Erricson had got upon his old subject: that the gods were not dead, but merely withdrawn, and that even a single true worshipper was enough to draw them into touch with the world, into the sphere of humanity, even into active and visible transformation. Algernon Blackwood, 'The Sea Fit', Pan's Garden (1912) . . . he was filled with a longing for the wood-world at night, with a desire for its darkness, for the mystery of it beneath the moon. Arthur Machen, 'Midsummer', Ornaments in Jade (1924) This paper will seek to address ways in which literature from the so-called 'occult revival' of the has influenced Paganism in the 20th century. Focusing on the work of writers such as Arthur Machen (1863-1947), Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951), and Saki ([H.H. Munro] 1870-1916), it will examine the ways in which the 'weird tale' emerged from the late Victorian interest in the occult and passed into a wider imaginative framework. As such, their work has had considerable impact both on major figures in post-war Paganism (Gerald Gardner was a Kipling enthusiast, for example) and on a wider reading public. Significantly, major reprints of the work of Machen, Blackwood and Saki coincided with the upsurge of popular interest in the occult during the 1960s. All of these writers specialised in short fiction, and this had led to their being frequently anthologised, both for adults, and notably, for children.

    Machen, Arthur
    3 March 1863 - 30 March 1947
A Welsh writer who spent much of his adult life in London, Machen devoted many of his supernaturalist works to an exploration of a mythic vein of the post-Gothic. His works have frequent recourse to the idea that some vestige of a primitive, malefic, pre-Christian "Little People" has survived into the present, and Machen explores the metaphysical implications of this possibility with gusto. Largely eschewing the mid- to late-Victorian interest in the psychological implications of the supernatural, Machen set the stage for the Cthulhu horrors of Lovecraft and others at the same time that his work testifies to the demise of Victorian complacency.
