B orn Arthur Llewellyn Jones in Caerleon-on-Usk, Wales, Machen was the author of "The Great God Pan" (1894), The Three Imposters (1890) (an episode novel containing "The Novel of the White Powder", "The Novel of the Black Seal," and others), The Hill of Dreams The Terror (1917) and other supernatural horror. His adopted surname is pronounced mack'n (rhymes with "blacken"). He was also an essayist, a journalist, a Shakespearean actor, an occultist (he was a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn along with Blackwood, Yeats, and Aleister Crowley), and a translator (of Cassanova's Memoirs , Beroalde de Verville's Moyen de Parvenir (Fantastic Tales) , and the Heptameron of Marguerite, Queen of Navarre). His autobiography was issued in three volumes beginning with Far Off Things in 1922 (the title is borrowed from Wordsworth). By the estimate of many, Machen deserves a premier place among the best of his field. Lovecraft counted him foremost of the four "modern masters" of supernatural horror (with Algernon Blackwood, Lord Dunsany, and M. R. James): "Of living creators of cosmic fear raised to its most artistic pitch, few if any can hope to equal the versatile Arthur Machen, ... master of an exquisitely lyrical and expressive prose style." Lovecraft ranked Machen's story "The White People" a close second to Blackwood's "The Willows" as the best weird story ever written. On the other hand, Carl van Vechten considered the highly autobiographical Hill of Dreams to be Machen's masterpiece; Machen said he had intended it to be "a Robinson Crusoe of the mind" and "an interior tale of the soul and its emotions." Fantasy connoisseur Lin Carter called Machen "one of the noblest stylistic masters of the English language in our century." And genre historian E. F. Bleiler listed him as "probably the outstanding British writer of

(1993) Arthur Machen (1863-1947) was a prolific writer and much has been written about him, but these letters to an American admirer tell more about the man, from his own pen, than much of what has been put to paper elsewhere. The period is 1923-26, near the end of Machen’s writing career, and in memory his gaze wanders back and forth over the years, lighting on his youth, the sources of his inspiration, his compulsion to write, his hardships, his utter steadfastness to his beliefs, his complete uncommercialism. S eudónimo de Arthur Llewelyn Jones, prolífico escritor de literatura fantástica nacido en Cærleon-on-Usk, en las serranías de Gales. La muerte de su padre en 1887, le ayuda a lograr una cierta independencia económica lo que le permite escribir entre 1889 y 1899, algunas de sus mejores obras, Los tres impostores El gran dios Pan (1894), en la que mezcla a la mitología romana con la celta para crear una de las más altas cotas del horror; y El pueblo blanco (1898). La muerte de su esposa en 1899, le apartó momentáneamente de la escritura, uniéndose a la logia secreta Golden Dawn (Orden del Amanecer Dorado) por invitación de su amigo el escritor Arthur Edward Waite. Durante su ocupación de reportero en el London Evening News, volvió a escribir novelas, obras como El Regreso (1915), quizá el más célebre de sus libros y El Terror (1917). También es autor de la obra de carácter realista Chronicles of Clemendy (1888) y de distintas autobiografías. Machen construye sus obras a la manera de Stevenson, mediante episodios, aparentemente independientes pero que al final resultaran obedecer todos a una trama sin fisuras y en el que el mal siempre está representado por personajes de características abiertamente latinas. Entre los creadores actuales del miedo cósmico que han alcanzado el más alto nivel artístico son pocos los que pueden compararse con él. Su poderosa producción de horror, a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, sigue siendo única en su clase y marca una época distinta en la historia de este género literario. Su influencia en la obra de otros escritores, como H.P. Lovecraft, T.E.D. Klein o Peter Straub es considerable. Desde 1929 vivió en Amersham (Buckinghamshire), hasta el final de su vida, el 30 de marzo de 1947 a la edad de 84 años. ©

Gekle Collection of Arthur Machen consists of correspondence and miscellaneous material relating to the Welsh translator, novelist, and storywriter Arthur Machen (1863-1947) that was collected by the American businessman and author William Francis Gekle. Collection Description
Scope Note Consists primarily of correspondence of Gekle concerning his collection of Arthur Machen books and manuscripts. Included are letters by James Branch Cabell, August Derleth, Arthur Machen (four letters), Charles Parsons, Paul Seybolt, Vincent Starrett, Edwin Steffe, and Joseph Kelly Vodrey, as well as a separate section of Vodrey's correspondence. Also present are a few images of Machen (one photograph), bibliographies of his works, material on the Arthur Machen Society, reviews and publicity matter for Gekle's work Arthur Machen: Weaver of Fantasy (1949), a pamphlet entitled "A Machen Miscellany" (1957) by Gekle, and other miscellanea.
