George MacDonald offers a prayer for each day of the year, reflecting on some aspect of God's relationship with us.
Book Description
In this new edition of a popular classic, the Scottish poet and novelist George MacDonald (1824-1905) offers prayer for each day of the year. Seemingly simple, the poetic prayers spring from a deep understanding of the personal relationship between God and the individual Christian. "The whole," MacDonald's son remarked, "is a record of a life's rather than a year's religious thought." Colin Duriez, an authority on C.S. Lewiswho regarded his debt to MacDonald inestimablewrites in the introduction that The Diary "represents a true Christian mysticism, combining a desire for oneness with God with an essentially bright, clear vision that has captivated readers since the book appeared."

LOST AND FOUND by: George Mac Donald (1824-1905)
    MISSED him when the sun began to bend;
    I found him not when I had lost his rim;
    With many tears I went in search of him,
    Climbing high mountains which did still ascend,
    And gave me echoes when I called my friend;
    Through cities vast and charnel-houses grim,
    And high cathedrals where the light was dim,
    Through books and arts and works without an end,
    But found him notthe friend whom I had lost.
    And yet I found himas I found the lark,
    A sound in fields I heard but could not mark;
    I found him nearest when I missed him most;
    I found him in my heart, a life in frost,
    A light I knew not till my soul was dark.

APPROACHES by: George Mac Donald (1824-1905)
    Christ is this side of thy hill.
    When thou turnest toward good,
    Christ is walking in thy wood.
    Then the Lord is in thy garden.
    When stern Duty wakes to watch,
    Then His hand is on the latch.
    But when Hope thy song doth rouse,
    Then the Lord is in the house.
    When to love is all thy wit,
    Christ doth at thy table sit.
    Then is Christ thy very soul.

Phantastes (1853)
  • "I know that good is coming to methat good is always coming; though few have at all times the simplicity and the courage to believe it. What we call evil, is the only and best shape, which, for the person and his condition at the time, could be assumed by the best good."
    XXV
At the Back of the North Wind (1871)
  • "All kindness is but justice. We owe it."
    VII - The Cathedral
  • "Well, I'll tell you a secret. I'm a prince."
    "I know that."
    "How do you know it?"
    "By the curl of the third eyelash on your left eyelid."
    "Which corner do you count from?"
    "That's a secret."
    XXVIII - Little Daylight
  • Now wicked fairies will not be bound by the law which the good fairies obey, and this always seems to give the bad the advantage over the good, for they use means to gain their ends which the others will not. But it is all of no consequence, for what they do never succeeds; nay, in the end it brings about the very thing they are trying to prevent. So you see that somehow, for all their cleverness, wicked fairies are dreadfully stupid, for, although from the beginning of the world they have really helped instead of thwarting the good fairies, not one of them is a bit wiser for it. She will try the bad thing just as they all did before her; and succeeds no better of course.
    ibid.

Lilith (1895)

George MacDonald (1824-1905) was a Scottish preacher, poet, novelist, fantasist, expositor, and public figure who was most well known for his children's books-At the Back of the North Wind, The Princess and the Goblin, The Princess and Curdie, and fantasies-Lilith and Phantastes. His fame is based on far more than his fantasies. His lifetime output of more than fifty popular books placed him in the same literary realm as Charles Dickens, William Thackery, and Thomas Carlyle. He numbered among his friends and acquaintances Lewis Carroll, Mark Twain, Lady Byron, and John Ruskin. Among his later admirers were G.K. Chesterton, W. H. Auden, and C.S. Lewis. MacDonald's fantasy Phantastes was a turning point in Lewis' conversion; Lewis acknowledged MacDonald as his spiritual master, and declared that he had never written a book without quoting from MacDonald. Although in MacDonald's time he was one of Britain's top-selling and most respected authors, in the twentieth century his books eventually became harder and harder to find until the only MacDonald books in print were a few of his books for children. After decades of being overlooked, MacDonald is once again a literary and spiritual influence in the lives of thousands of people. We hope our publications renew his life changing words to another generation and century.
