MACDONALD, GEORGE Both as preacher and as lecturer on literary topics Georg Macdonalds sincerity and moral enthusiasm exercised great influence upon thoughtful minds. His verse is homely and direct, and marked by religious fervour and simplicity~ As, a portrayer of Scottish peasant-life in fiction he was the precursor of a large school, which has benefited by his example. and surpassed its original leader in popularity. The religious tone of his novels is relieved by tolerance and a broad spirit of humour, and the simpler emotions of humble life are sympathetically treated. George MacDonald (1824-1905) was one of the most original of nineteenth century thinkers. His writing and lecturing brought him wide recognition in his own day, and into the company of many of the leading Victorians of the time. MacDonald's writing has an outstanding imaginative power, largely influenced by the German and English Romantics. It is in the realms of fantasy and children's literature, along with his visionary theology, that has made his greatest contribution. Phantastes is recognised as a seminal classic of adult fantasy writing. His influence upon twentieth century literature has been far-reaching. The works of C. S. Lewis, G. K. Chesterton and W. H. Auden, in particular, bear witness to the power of MacDonald's imagination, a power which remains undiminished for the reader of today. George MacDonald (1824-1905) is best known as a novelist, the author of fantasies such as Phantastes (1858) and Lilith (1895) and realistic works like David Elginbrod (1863) and Alec Forbes of Howglen (1865). He was also, however, a respected religious teacher. He pastored only one churchTrinity Congregational Church, Arundel, 1850-1853before turning to novels and poems, but he continued to preach and publish sermons after achieving literary fame. Until recently, our knowledge of MacDonald's homiletics was limited to the sermons he wrote for publication: The Miracles of Our Lord The Hope of the Gospel Unspoken sermons (3 vols, 1867-1889) and the discourses he incorporated into many of his novels. We now have records of the sermons he preached as well: J. Joseph Flynn and David Edwards have located 20 transcripts in Victorian periodicals and published them as George MacDonald in the Pulpit: The 'Spoken' sermons of George MacDonald (Whitethorn, CA: Johannesen Printing and Publishing, 1996).

George MacDonald
The novels of George MacDonald all have a common link. I believe his purpose in writing is for characters and his readers to experience spiritual growth by witnessing the New Testament as lived through others. " It moved me the way books did when, as a child, the great gates of literature began to open and first encounters with noble thoughts and utterances were unspeakably thrilling."- Elizabeth Yates, an editor for one of MacDonald’s novels. MacDonald’s main characters live out and apply the word, the lessons, and the life and character of Christ with excellence. The characters become part of the readers life, forever to be remembered and easily recalled when the reader finds himself in similar situations. MacDonald’s flavorful words and ability make the stories so real and captivates his readers. They left me encouraged, strengthened and caused me to question priorities, examining What is most important? What is my purpose? His books inspire the readers to be more thankful and more helpful to others.

George MacDonald
MacDonald was born in Huntly on 10th December 1824, but moved soon after with his family to a nearby farm. He went to university in Aberdeen in 1840 and to Highbury College in 1848 to train as a Congregational minister. He was forced to resign from his first charge at Arundel in 1853 and lived thereafter as a man of letters and on the charity of his friends and disciples. His first important original publication was a long religious poem, Within and without (1855) but a more important landmark was Phantastes (1858), his first major contribution to the genre of fantasy and a complex attempt to communicate that sense of otherness which is his abiding concern in his writing. Influenced by both English and German Romantic writers, and by religious poets of the Renaissance, Phantastes with its poetry and its visionariness was in turn an important influence on CS Lewis and his circle. Here, its hero starts a new day after a night at the foot of a protective beech:

George MacDonald
MacDonald, the son of a farmer, was born at Huntly (Aberdeenshire) on 10 December 1824. The family claimed descent from survivors of the Massacre of Glencoe (1692). MacDonald went to Aberdeen University, then to Highbury Theological College (1848-50) to train as a Congregationalist. He resigned his first charge at Arundel in 1853, and he turned to journalism and writing. He was offered a professorship at Bedford College, London, in 1859, and became a successful lecturer on religious issues in the US. His fantastic poems, novels and fairy tales were to prove influential on David Lindsay , J(ohn) R(onald) R(euel) Tolkein (1892-1973) and C(live) S(taples) Lewis (1898-1963). The need to support his large family encouraged him to write more realistic novels (eg "David Elginbrod" (1863), "Alec Forbes" (1865) and "Robert Falconer" (1868) ), often set in his native Aberdeenshire. MacDonald's literary friends included Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, 1832-98), John Ruskin (1819-1900) and (John) F(rederick) D(enison) Maurice (1805-72). MacDonald suffered from ill health and spent his later summers abroad (mostly in Bordigherra, Italy). He died in Ashtead, Surrey on 18 September 1905. A memorial to him was recently erected in Drumblade Churchyard, Aberdeenshire. AC
