Administrative/Biographical History
The sixth generation of Longmans, Robert Guy and William L., became partners in 1909. They took a keen interest in expanding the overseas branches. Educational publishing continued to be the mainstay of the firm during the twentieth century, but their literary reputation was maintained, with authors such as Stella Gibbons, Mary Renault and Thornton Wilder, and later Gavin Maxwell, Stevie Smith and the children's writer Leon Garfield. Other useful earners were Roget's Thesaurus and Gray's Anatomy
Scope and Content
Longman premises suffered from two fires, the first in 1861 and the second in the Blitz in December 1940. The archives which remain are therefore not complete, but do form an extensive collection. They are divided into three parts

    Henry Green (Henry Yorke): Loving

"Loving stands, together with Living, as the masterpiece of this disciplined, poetic and grimly realistic, witty and melancholy, amorous and austere voluptuarycomic, richly entertaininghaunting and poeticwriter." - TLS (*****)
    Henry Green (Henry Yorke): Nothing

The British writer Henry Green's literary skill went far beyond a comedy of manners, which this book appears to be on the surface. Dense with meaning, "Nothing" is a short literary gem, which forces the reader to read a million nuances into the witty and yet deeply dense conversations which make up the entirety of the book. Arnold Bennett: The Old Wives' Tale

Published in 1908. This study of the changes wrought by time on the lives of two English sisters during the 19th century is a masterpiece of literary realism. Constance and Sophia Baines, the daughters of a shopkeeper, grow up in the rural town of Bursley. Sophia eventually runs off and settles in Paris with her husband, who is a cad, and Constance remains behind in England and marries the mild-mannered shop assistant. The sisters are reunited years later when they are old, and Bennett skillfully contrasts what has remained stable in their characters with the differences time and environment have produced in their personalities. This long and ambitious work established Bennett's reputation as a novelist. (*****)

Scottish Historical Figures
This page lists a very few of the Scots who have made their mark on the world over the ages. Scotland is a small country but, for all that, Scots have had an exceptional influence on the world. Many are the factors which have contributed to this centuries-old phenomenon. Some we can be pleased about, others are less worthy of broadcast, but interesting nonetheless: the poverty of the country in times past, encouraging those with ambition to seek their fortunes outwith the country's borders, the forced emigration of large numbers from the Highlands by greedy landowners more interested in money than responsibility, but also the remarkable educational system all had their part to play. The unique educational system which Scots enjoyed for hundreds of years gave them the intellectual tools to tackle the world. From the 16th century until modern times education was available to a far higher percentage of the population in Scotland than in any other country.
Some of the people described are very famous, some less so, some not well known at all. I've just chosen a few who've captured my interest at particular times. The selection is therefore an arbitrary one. If you wish to see someone included you can contact me here . Send me the name and some information about the person.
George Buchanan 1506-1582 More Famous Than Shakespeare Born at Killearn, Stirlingshire. The son of a minor Stirlingshire laird, he was educated at the local parish school until fourteen. He then studied at St.Andrews and Paris under John Major (see below). When he was prosecuted in Scotland as a heretic he fled to England. He journeyed to France and then Portugal, where the Inquisition imprisoned him for a year and a half. During the years 1551-1561 he was in Paris. By 1566 he was back in Scotland and principal of St.Leonard's College at St.Andrews. He became James VI's personal tutor. He exercised a very strong influence over the King, although James did not share Buchanan's severe Calvinist beliefs. His fame was not based on merely one area. The greatest Latinist of his day, (Latin was the universal language of scholarship at that time) he wrote Latin plays and poems, tracts against
