Key Figures CHAPMAN, John (1801-1854):
Born in Loughborough, Leicestershire, Chapman started in manufacturing and later turned to political writing. He was instrumental in the Great Indian Peninsular Railway project (1844-46), and published the popular "Principles of Indian Reform" in March 1853, as well as several other articles on India. He died suddenly of cholera in September 1854. CLIVE, Robert, First Baron Clive of Plassey (1725-1774): Clive became the Governor of Bengal in 1757 after the Battle of Plassey, which consolidated Bengal under British rule. He also systematically extracted funds from the puppet Nawab (ruler) who was established after the battle. This led to his being tried for corruption in England from 1767 to 1773. CORNWALLIS, Charles, First Marquis and second Earl Cornwallis (1738-1805): Governor-General of India (1786-1793), Cornwallis implemented many reforms in the East India Company's organization to counteract financial corruption. The East India Company was divided into three branches (revenue, judicial and commercial) and salaries were raised. In order to strengthen relations between British authority and Indian landowners, land revenue assessment was assigned to native zamindars, who were expected to pay taxes to the British. HASTINGS, Warren (1732-1818):

E xecutives really want to build effective organizations. They care about their organization's success and about the people who work for them. This is why they repeatedly try new ideas: T.Q.M., B.P.R., empowerment, flattening, self-directed teams . . . . And repeatedly they are frustrated when nothing seems to make much of a difference. Meanwhile, people get cynical when their leaders experiment with a seemingly disjointed series of changes, each of which is implemented half-heartedly and does little good. RoadMap has helped many leaders document why changes are needed; describe a vision of the end-point; define a clear, comprehensive path forward; and explain where each initiative fits within a broader plan. This book is for executives who have the vision, patience, and commitment to look past the fads and quick fixes, and solve organizational problems once and for all with lasting, systemic change.

SOUTH ASIAN HISTORY History of British Rule and Colonization in India British Education in India As has been noted by numerous scholars of British rule in India, the physical presence of the British in India was not significant. Yet, for almost two centuries, the British were able to rule two-thirds of the subcontinent directly, and exercise considerable leverage over the Princely States that accounted for the remaining one-third. While the strategy of divide and conquer was used most effectively, an important aspect of British rule in India was the psychological indoctrination of an elite layer within Indian society who were artfully tutored into becoming model British subjects. This English-educated layer of Indian society was craftily encouraged in absorbing values and notions about themselves and their land of birth that would be conducive to the British occupation of India, and furthering British goals of looting India's physical wealth and exploiting it's labour. In 1835, Thomas Macaulay articulated the goals of British colonial imperialism most succinctly:

Thomas Macaulay Richard Whately (1787-1863) was a contemporary of Jane Austen, a scholar, and a churchman. He was professor of political economy at Oxford and would rise to the position of archbishop of Dublin. He is remembered as a critic of the use of dogma in theology. He also knew how to read as he demonstrated with this review of Jane Austen's last two novels. I will quote a very small part of the much longer essay. I recommend the full version to you; the essay was written over 175 years ago, but contains an excellent analysis of novels in general and Jane Austen's novels in particular. Among the many good things that I will not quote is the best analysis of Mansfield Park that I have ever seen. (I do not reproduce Whately's spelling of either "Shakspeare" or "Austin".)
Among the authors of this school there is no one superior, if equal, to the lady whose last production is now before us, and whom we have much regret in finally taking leave of: her death (in the prime of life, considered as a writer) being announced in this the first publication to which her name is affixed. ...
