A prickly visitor calls by
by Peter Walker WELCOME VISITOR: Hedgehogs can prove to be a real benefit to your garden. A YOUNG hedgehog appeared in our garden this week and it did not seem at all worried or alarmed at our presence. My wife and I were busy with our gardening chores when we noticed him. He was snuffling around among some vegetation near a flight of steps and it was only when I started the lawnmower that he showed real concern. The noise alarmed him and he tried to hide, but when the mower ceased, he resumed his foraging. Even though we were working only a few feet away from him, he continued his hunt for food and we had no wish for him to leave our garden. On the contrary, it is in our interests that he remains because hedgehogs are wonderful pest controllers, eating a range of creatures like slugs, snails, beetles, caterpillars and other garden nuisances. As we worked, he pottered around the borders and we could hear him snuffling and disturbing the vegetation as he explored our little patch of England. Eventually, having finished my lawn mowing, I moved to another part of the garden and, as I stood on a path, I noticed my new friend heading towards me.

Administrative/Biographical History
The sixth generation of Longmans, Robert Guy and William L., became partners in 1909. They took a keen interest in expanding the overseas branches. Educational publishing continued to be the mainstay of the firm during the twentieth century, but their literary reputation was maintained, with authors such as Stella Gibbons, Mary Renault and Thornton Wilder, and later Gavin Maxwell, Stevie Smith and the children's writer Leon Garfield. Other useful earners were Roget's Thesaurus and Gray's Anatomy
Scope and Content
Longman premises suffered from two fires, the first in 1861 and the second in the Blitz in December 1940. The archives which remain are therefore not complete, but do form an extensive collection. They are divided into three parts

Lytton district and holding was named by Sir George Bowen in 1859 after Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer, the first Baron Lytton, 18031873.

Suburb Notes kindly provided
by Ron Potter of Piula Publications Short History of Brisbane
With all the fervor of an evangelist, the Rev. Dr. John Dunmore Land spent 1846 to 1848 recruiting migrants for Moreton Bay. He worked in competition with the official migration scheme, but his chartered vessel, the Fortitude, arrived a month after the Land and Emigration Commissioner’s Artemesia. Although led to believe that they would be given land on arrival, Lang’s migrants were denied this. When they came ashore they had nowhere to go and many were almost destitute. They were allowed to form a shanty town out on the slopes of what is now Gregory Terrace and Water Street near the notorious fringe settlement of York’s Hollow, close to where the Exhibition Grounds are now. The name Fortitude valley came from that early village of Fortitude migrants. On occasions, the later inhabitants have misplaced Aboriginal place names. This happened to Pinken-ba, the place of tortoises. It originally referred to what we now call New Farm, and the Aboriginal people referred to the area now known as Pinkenba as Dumben, a kind of tree fern. When the N.S.W. Governor advised the establishment of an agricultural station away from the Brisbane settlement, Captain Logan and Colonial Botanist Fraser, selected a tract of land on the north side of the Brisbane River backed by ‘a fine creek’ (Serpentine Creek). It comprised undulating ridges of a gentle height with a small watercourse between each one. The soil was a rich, brown loam which supported a luxuriant growth of native grasses and was lightly timbered mainly with blue gum. An agricultural establishment was commenced there in 1829 using convict labour. Later it was used as the place for women prisoners. It got its name from the large number of eagles seen in the area.
