Lyell in America
Transatlantic Geology, 1841-1853 Leonard G. Wilson
$52.00 hardcover 0-8018-5797-X (20 ctn qty) 1998 444 pp. 39 illus. Add hardcover to shopping cart A pioneering geologist from Scotland, Charles Lyell (1797-1875) was one of the nineteenth century's most important and controversial scientists. His landmark 1830 book Principles of Geology , for example, went against the received wisdom of the age and posited that throughout the history of the earth, geological changes occurred largely through slow and ongoing processes. And although he is today perhaps best known as Charles Darwin's mentor, Lyell's contributions are still felt in the disciplines of geology and evolutionary biology. In Lyell in America , Leonard Wilson continues his acclaimed study of Lyell's life and works with this chronicle of Lyell's extensive travels throughout America which blends detailed scientific observations with colorful travelogue. In his travels, Lyell also made insightful observations about American society and the continent's pronounced regional differences. Traveling along the entire Atlantic coast and as far inland as the Mississippi River, he and Mary saw villages, towns, and cities of every size and temperament, and they met and came to know many Americans. Lyell marveled at the prosperity and rapid growth of pioneer settlements into flourishing cities, as well as at the vigorous enterprise of the American people. He enjoyed the speed and comfort of the river steamboats and the friendliness of the people. In the South, he studied slavery and challenged many of the racist suppositions of white intellectuals there, pondering how the institution of slavery might be ended.

Sir Charles Lyell was born in Scotland on November 14, 1797 and died in London on February 22, 1875. He attended Oxford University at age 19. He was knighted for scientific accomplishment in 1848. He later became a Baron in 1864. He grew up the oldest of 10 children. Lyell's father was an active naturalist. Lyell had access to an elaborate library including subjects such as Geology. When Lyell was at Oxford, his interests were mathematics, classics, the legal system (law) and geology. He attended a lecture by William Buckland that triggered his enthusiasm for geology. Lyell originally started his career as a lawyer, but later turned to geology. His zoological skills aided in his extensive studies and observations throughout the world. He became an author of T he Geological Evidence of the Antiquity of Man in 1863 and Principles of Geology (12 editions). Lyell argued in this book that, at the time, presently observable geological processes were adequate to explain geological history. He thought the action of the rain, sea, volcanoes and earthquakes explained the geological history of more ancient times. Lyell rebelled against the prevailing theories of geology of the time. He thought the theories were biased, based on the interpretation of Genesis. He thought it would be more practical to exclude sudden geological catastrophes to vouch for fossil remains of extinct species and believed it was necessary to create a vast time scale for Earth's history. This concept was called Uniformitarianism. The second edition of

John van Wyhe
Charles Lyell was the son of a wealthy gentleman who had inherited a large estate in Scotland. Lyell went to university at Exeter College, Oxford. Later he moved to London where he planned to become a barrister. However his poor eyesight made this profession impossible and so Lyell turned to his real interest- science. Geology soon became his forte and as member of the Geological Society, he took part in the lively debates in the 1820s about how to reconcile the biblical account of the Flood with geological findings. Lyell, as well as Roderick Murchison and George Poulett Scrope became an outspoken opponent of the diluvial position. Lyell is most famous for his great geological opus: The Principles of Geology: Being an Attempt to Explain the Former Changes of the Earth's Surface, by Reference to Causes now in Operation (3 vols 1830-33).
Lyell advocated what William Whewell later dubbed a uniformitarian view of geology. This assumed first of all the constancy of natural laws (except as regarded the origin of new species which was left rather vague). The kinds of causes which affected the earth in the past must be assumed to have been exactly those we see in operation today (such as erosion, sediment deposition, volcanic action, earthquakes etc.) Furthermore, these causes must be assumed to have been of the same intensity in the past as we observe them today. To demonstrate that gradual processes could be responsible for great changes, Lyell used an engraving of the temple at Serapis as his frontispiece. The temple had, during the course of human history, been above sea level, then for a long period partially submerged, and again was above sea level as attested by the dark bands of damage caused by waterborne life across the columns.

Sir Charles Lyell The son of the wealthy landowner of Kinnordy, Perthshire, Charles was brought up in Hampshire at the request of his mother who feared that drunkenness was endemic in Scotland. Having studied Classics at Oxford, he became a lawyer but gave this up in favour of geology, encouraged by the eccentric Dr. William Buckland. A European tour with Murchison, and his knowledge of Hutton's Theory of the Earth , provided the inspiration for his Principles of Geology (1830-1833). This text, forming the basis of modern geology, was highly controversial and greatly influenced his friend Charles Darwin who read it while on the voyage of the Beagle . Lyell cared deeply about social rank, and having already been ostracised by some of his more pious friends, was careful not to admit his support for Darwin's theory until sometime after its publication. His lecture tours of the United States in the 1840s were nevertheless highly successful. Lyell's visit to the Cupar area in November 1838 was recorded in the Fifeshire Journal. "Professor LYELL - This distinguished geologist yesterday visited some of our most interesting localities, and was particularly struck with the beauties of Dura Den. He inspected, with great admiration, some specimens of the insects and fishes belonging to Mr. Dalgleish of Dura, and which had been exhibited at the meeting of the Fifeshire Literary and Antiquarian Society on Tuesday." He later visited Dura Den with John Anderson in 1842. Back to Denizens of the Deep See Geology and Genesis Back to biographies next

Charles Lyell (1797-1875)
Founder of modern geology and the great early 19th century exponent of Hutton 's scientific gradualism. Trained as a lawyer, he lived off an inheritance and on profits from his famous Principles of Geology. He defined the epochs of the Cenozoic and made key advances in stratigraphy, sedimentology, and paleontology. His original views on earth history held species to be immutable and specially created at the beginning of each geological era. This non-progressive view of organic succession was opposed to Owen 's theistic views and taken up by Huxley . A close friend and mentor of Darwin , he admitted evolution after the Origin but never fully accepted natural selection despite having been consulted on the theory as early as 1844. With Hooker , he worked out the professional compromise leading to the joint Darwin- Wallace publication that introduced the selection theory in 1858. Career:

Lyell, Sir Charles [l I u l] Pronunciation Key Lyell, Sir Charles , British geologist. After studying and briefly practicing law, he spent most of his life in travel and in popularizing scientific ideas. He championed and won general acceptance of the theory of uniformity of causes, which was first proposed by James Hutton (as opposed to the theory of catastrophism ) in his Principles of Geology uniformitarianism , that the present processes acted on the earth in the same way all the way through time and at about the same intensity. He also brought up the idea that all processes (i.e., biological and geological) were delicately balanced. In addition to Elements of Geology (1838) and The Geological Evidences of the Antiquity of Man (1863), he wrote two books on his travels in North America. Lyell's work was influential in shaping 19th-century ideas not only in geology specifically, but in scientific fields as a whole; he facilitated later acceptance of Charles Darwin's theory of evolution. Among Lyell's other important contributions was the division of the Tertiary period into the Eocene, Miocene, and Pliocene epochs.

    Sir Charles Lyell
Influential geologist. Born on the family estate at Kinnordy (Angus), the eldest son of a noted botanist. Lyell spent much of his childhood at their other home, Bartley Lodge in the New Forest of England becoming interested in natural history. Lyell studied law at Oxford and practised for two years, but with a growing interest in geology he was asked to contribute to a geological map of Scotland by surveying Angus (then Forfarshire). He read his first paper, " On a recent formation of freshwater limestone in Forfarshire ", to the Geological Society in 1822. An enthusiast of fieldwork, Lyell travelled to Mount Etna in Italy and, with Sir Roderick Murchison, to France (1828). He was impressed by James Hutton's theory of uniformitarianism which suggested that landscapes evolve over millions of years and developed these ideas in his Principles of Geology (1830). Lyell put in place the intellectual framework which encouraged Charles Darwin to propose his theories for the evolution of living things. These ideas were explosively challenging at a time when the literal interpretation of creationism, and of a biblical flood which shaped the landscape, were universally accepted. He became Professor of Geology at King's College (London) in 1831 and married Mary, daughter of social reformer Leonard Horner (1832). Lyell's
