Home Biography Historical Figures BIOGRAPHY : Historical Figures Charles Darwin Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802) was a well renowned doctor, poet and philosopher who wrote many books concerning nature. Among his works Zoonomia, a medical textbook, has received the most attention. In this work Erasmus Darwin expressed such ideas as "evolution by natural and sexual selection, protective adaptation, inheritance of acquired characteristics, and even the evolution of mankind" almost fifty years before Charles Darwin (Nelson & Jurmain., 1991, p.32). Erasmus Darwin had said that all different living things were produced over millions of years by one original ancient parent, such that each offspring had a natural tendency to improve itself (Karp, 1968, p.14). However, fossil records show that this theory of one original parent was not probable (Karp, 1968, p.14). Erasmus' opposition toward any form of organized religion and his rejection of Christianity was considered to be superficial and eccentric (Chancellor, 1973, p.21). His tendency to theorize and create wild speculations without testing his theories caused his reputation as a scientist to suffer. By the end of the 18th century all discussions of evolution were suppressed because of the rigid creationist views held by the Church who persecuted anyone who challenged their beliefs (Chancellor, 1973, p.41). It was not until the publication of Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species that the discussion of evolution was revived.

Darwin (1809-1882), while visiting a friend in London in December 1881, suffered a mild heart seizure. On the 12th of February 1882, his 73rd birthday, Darwin wrote to a friend that "my course is nearly run" and within two months, on Wednesday, the 19th of April 1882, he had a heart attack and died. Darwin's remains, however are not in the community of Down (where he lived from 1842 until 1882), but are localed in the chapel of St. Faith in Westminster Abbey, in London. Upon his death, twenty members of Parliament requested that Darwin be buried in the Abbey and his four-horse funeral carriage (accompanied by his sons Francis, Leonard, and Horace) made the 16 mile journey to London on the 25th of April 1882. If one considers how fiercely Darwin had been attacked by certain of the orthodox clergy during his lifetime it does seem somewhat interesting that he once intended to become a clergyman and that he is, in fact, buried in one of the most symbolic religious structures of the British Empire.

SIR CHARLES LYELL
Born on November 14, 1797, this British lawyer turned geologist rebelled against the prevailing theories of geology, catastrophism, of the time. Lyell further developed James Hutton's 1785 theory of Uniformitarianism . This theory says that the natural processes that change the earth in the present have operated in the past at the same gradual rate. He rejected the idea that the earth's history was dominated by catastrophic events, he favored gradualism. Lyell supports his theory with geological observations that he made in his extensive travels to Europe and North America. He is also considered one of the founders of the study of the lawyers in the earth's surface, which is called stratigraphy. Between 1830 and 1872 he published his theories in "Principles of Geology", which was about the factors that can change the surface of the earth. This book went through 12 editions and was followed by "The Geological Evidence of the Antiquity of Man" in 1863, which was about mans early appearance on earth. His works greatly influenced his friends Charles Darwin's theroy of evolution . Lyell was knighted in 1848 and became a Baron in 1864. Sir Charles Lyell died on February 22, 1875.

"Named on July 2, 1863, by William H. Brewer and Charles F. Hoffmann of the California Geological Survey. 'Mount Lyell, for Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1875), whose admirable geological works have been well known to students of this branch of science, in this country, for the past thirty years.' ( Whitney Yosemite Guide-Book Mount Lyell is the highest peak in Yosemite National Park. The first ascent was by John Boies Tileston of Boston, on August 29, 1871. 'I was up early the next morning, toasted some bacon, boiled my tea, and was off at six. I climbed the mountain, and reached the top of the highest pinnacle ("inaccessible," acording to the State Geological Survey), before eight. I came down the mountain, and reached camp before one, pretty tired.' ( SCB 12, no. 3, 1926: 305.)"
- Peter Browning, Place Names of the Sierra Nevada "July 2 we are up early. First, a hasty and substantial breakfast, then we prepare to climb the highest peak back. The frost lies heavy on the grass, and we are some distance before the sun peeps over the hill. Over rocks and snow, the last trees are passed, we get on bravely, and think to be up by eleven o'clock. We cross great slopes all polished like glass by former glaciers. Striking the last great slope of snow, we have only one thousand feet more to climb. In places the snow is soft and we sink two or three feet in it. We toil on for hours; it seems at times as if our breath refuses to strengthen us, we puff and blow so in the thin air.

UP WITH CATASTROPHISM! - IMPACT No. 38 August 1976 by Henry M. Morris , Ph.D.*
The Uniformitarian Century One of the surprising developments of the past decade has been the resurgence of catastrophism in geological interpretation. Although the great men who were the real founders of geology (Steno, Woodward, et al) were not only catastrophists but believed in the Noahic Flood as the most important geologic event in earth history, the principle of uniformitarianism has dominated geological thinking for the past 150 years. The Scottish agriculturalist, James Hutton, and then the British lawyer, Charles Lyell, persuaded their contemporaries to reject the Biblical chronology and its cataclysmic deluge in favor of very slow processes acting through aeons of time. In his widely used textbook, Zumberge stated as recently as 1963: "Opposed to this line of thinking was Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1875), a contemporary of Cuvier, who held that earth changes were gradual, taking place at the same uniform slowness that they are today. Lyell is thus credited with the propagation of the premise that more or less has guided geological thought ever since, namely, that the present is the key to the past. In essence, Lyell's doctrine of uniformitarianism stated that past geological processes operated in the same manner and at the same rate they do today."

    J. Peter Lesley Papers (7.75 linear feet) B L56 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract After a brief career in the Congregational church, J. Peter Lesley left the ministry in 1852 to work full-time as a geologist. Having gained experience in structural geology and stratigraphy with the First Pennsylvania Geological Survey (1836-1842), Lesley became an expert in the geology of coal, working for the Pennsylvania Railroad and other corporations and conducting some of the first systematic studies of the state's hydrocarbon resources. A long-time professor at the University of Pennsylvania, he was elected to the APS in 1856, serving variously as its librarian, secretary, and vice president, and he was selected as Director of the Second Pennsylvania Geological Survey (1875-1889). Lesley died in 1903. The Lesley Papers include letters to and from Peter Lesley and his wife, Susan on geology, coal and iron mining, abolition, educational reform, organized charity, and Unitarianism. The collection offers important insight into academic and applied geology in late 19th century Pennsylvania, the development of the coal and iron industries, as well as into the Lesleys' progressive social and intellectual milieu. It is divided into three series: Lesley's general correspondence, his correspondence with his brother Joseph, and microfilms of Lesley's research notes.
