mong great benefactors, Martin Luther is one of the most illustrious. He headed the Protestant Reformation. This movement is so completely inter-linked with the literature, the religion, the education, the prosperityyea, even the political historyof Europe, that it is the most important and interesting of all modern historical changes. It is a subject of such amazing magnitude that no one can claim to be well informed who does not know its leading issues and developments, as it spread from Germany to Switzerland, France, Holland, Sweden, England, and Scotland. The central and prominent figure in the movement is Luther; but the way was prepared for him by a host of illustrious men, in different countries,by Savonarola in Italy, by Huss and Jerome in Bohemia, by Erasmus in Holland, by Wyclif in England, and by sundry others, who detested the corruptions they ridiculed and lamented, but could not remove. It was then that a kind and enlightened friend visited him, and recommended him to read the Bible. The Bible never has been a sealed book to monks; it was ever highly prized; no convent was without it: but it was read with the spectacles of the Middle Ages. Repentance meant penance. In Saint Paul's Epistles Luther discovers the true ground of justification, not works, but faith; for Paul had passed through similar experiences. Works are good, but faith is the gift of God. Works are imperfect with the best of men, even the highest form of works, to a Mediaeval eye,self-expiation and penance; but faith is infinite, radiating from divine love; faith is a boundless joy, salvation by the grace of God, his everlasting and precious boon to people who cannot climb to heaven on their hands and knees, the highest gift which God ever bestowed on men, eternal life.

Martin Luther (1483-1546)
Martin Luther was born in Eisleben, Germany, the son of Hans Luther, who worked in the copper mines, and his wife Margarethe. He went to school at Magdeburg and Eisenach, and entered the University of Erfurt in 1501, graduating with a BA in 1502 and an MA in 1505. His father wished him to be a lawyer, but Luther was drawn to the study of the Scriptures, and spent three years in the Augustinian monastery at Erfurt. In 1507 he was ordained a priest, and went to the University of Wittenberg, where he lectured on philosophy and the Scriptures, becoming a powerful and influential preacher. A papal bull containing 41 theses was issued against him. He burned it before a multitude of doctors, students, and citizens in Wittenberg. He was excommunicated, and Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, convened the first Diet at Worms in 1521, before which Luther was called to retract his teachings. Luther refused to relent. An order was issued for the destruction of his books, and he was put under the ban of the Empire. On his return from Worms he was seized, at the instigation of the elector of Saxony, and lodged (for his own protection) in the Wartburg, the elector's fortress. During the year he spent there, he translated the Scriptures and composed his cogent controversial treatise, "Refutation of the Argument of Latomus'.

, a text which was later called textus receptus . The translation was published in 1521. The translation of the Old Testament followed in 1534. He chose to omit parts of the Old Testament that were found in the Greek Septuagint but not in the Hebrew Masoretic texts then available. Those parts were eventually omitted by nearly all Protestants, and are known in Protestant circles as the Apocrypha. Today most Protestant denominations follow ideas based in Luther's teachings, and the Lutheran Church in particular is directly descended from his work.
Martin Luther and the Jewish people
Luther initially preached tolerance and love towards the Jewish people, convinced that the reason they had never converted to Christianity was that they were discriminated against. However, after his overtures to Jews failed to convince Jewish people to adopt Christianity, he began preaching that the Jews were inherently evil, and that they should be destroyed. Luther called the Jewish people "venomous beats, vipers, disgusting scum, canders, devils incarnate. Their private houses must be destroyed and devastated, they could be lodged in stables. Let the magistrates burn their synagogues and let whatever escapes be covered with sand and mud. Let them force to work, and if this avails nothing, we will be compelled to expel them like dogs in order not to expose ourselves to incurring divine wrath and eternal damnation from the Jews and their lies." Martin Luther (1483-1546)
Martin Luther often referred to his humble origins saying that he was from German peasant stock. This was only partly true; his father had started out as a peasant but he moved to a mining town, called Mansfield, and later graduated from miner to an employer when he rented a smelting works. His father's rise in prosperity was probably the reason for Luther receiving a good education. His parents wanted him to become a lawyer and encouraged his studies. Luther started school at the age of seven and spent ten years in primary and secondary schools. Religion was always very important to him and he joined in church activities, such as singing in the choir. In 1501 he entered Erfurt University. He studied Latin, philosophy and logic. He graduated from Erfurt with a master's degree in 1505. He was twenty one years old when he decided, quite suddenly, to enter the Augustinian monastery and become a friar. The Augustinian order was very strict and the friars begged for their sustenance. In 1507 Luther was ordained as a priest and, two years later at the age of twenty six, he was transferred to the Wittenberg monastery in Saxony. Luther always felt that he was unworthy and that, after his death, God would punish him for all his sins. He joined such a strict monastic order so that he could dedicate his life to God. Luther kept all of the rules, even though they were strict, and spent hours confessing every possible sin he could think of. In 1510 he was sent to Rome on monastery business. He was shocked by the behaviour of many of the clergy he met during his visit, most of whom were not keeping to their vows.

Martin Luther (1483-1546) by Helmar Junghans; Released by "Gesellschaft für Multimediaproduktionen in Berlin mbH"; ( http://www.is.in-berlin.de/~mib/ ); 1996; Price: DM 78.00 General and technical information: This CD-ROM provides a useful overview of Martin Luther’s life and times in German. Though not likely to offer many new insights to specialists in the field, it makes an appealing introduction for German-speaking students or non-specialists. This, indeed, is the audience for whom the product was designed. Released in 1996, the CD-ROM runs on most recent operating systems, beginning with Windows 3.1.x/NT 3.5.x, or Windows 95/NT 4. It is advertised as being compatible with MacOS and OS/2, though no installation instructions for these systems are provided. Installation itself is easily mastered, requiring only the loading of a new font. Beyond that, no more than a mouse-click gets the user underway. This assumes, of course, that the user reads German and can understand the "Liesmich" installation-instructions. As a whole, the CD-ROM is user-friendly. Navigation requires an initial deciphering of rather arcane symbols, but is easily negotiable once that is done. Both the accompanying booklet and an "Information" page within the program are provided and help in this respect. The user jumps back and forth between narrative texts, explanatory notes or short films, all the while accompanied by a quasi-medieval monastic drone, which becomes more ludicrous with increased use, but can, of course, be turned off.

    About the Author
Martin Luther (1483-1546), an Augustinian priest, biblical scholar, and linguist, was born and died in Eisleben, Saxony, a duchy in northwestern Germany. His attack on ecclesiastical abuses, the Ninety-five Theses, signaled the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. Luther's father wanted him to be a lawyer and sent him to the University of Erfut, where he received a B.A. degree in 1502 and an M.A. in 1505. Luther joined the Augustinian order in 1506 and was ordained a priest a year later. Like other German Augustinians of this era, Luther sought a stricter observance of the rules of the order and this was reflected in his teaching and writing. Luther taught at the new University of Wittenberg from 1508 to 1546 and received a doctorate of theology in 1512.

    Martin Luther's Life
The character of Luther's writings and speeches as well as his relationship to his environment changed drastically during his lifetime. Luther's life can be divided into four major phases. The first phase of Luther's life which encompasses his childhood university studies and his time as an Augustinian monk is characterized by his search for religious understanding. Luther was living as a university professor in Wittenberg at this time. When he finally reached the understanding he was searching for, he realizes that there are many problems in the world and the church. He rebels against the abuses of the church and his actions spark strong reactions. Luther hides at the Wartburg on the orders of his Elector, Frederick the Wise . The Reformation has caught on with some of the most powerful people and is unstoppable. Luther is able to return to Wittenberg to fight his adversaries and put his ideas into practice. During the last years of his life, Luther is no less active, but resignation and an inclination towards sudden outbursts of rage can be seen in the works and speeches of the aging reformer.
