Luther, Martin (1483-1546)
The most prominent leader of the Protestant Reformation, who was excommunicated from the Roman Catholic church because of his persistent efforts to change some of he church's doctrines and customs. He taught that the Bible alone, apart from church tradition, had authority to declare what was to be believed. In salvation Luther stressed justification by faith alone, apart from the works of law.

1483-1546), deutscher Theologe und Reformator.
Martin Luther wurde am 10. November 1483 in Eisleben geboren.

CITATION: Martin Luther Manuscript, MSS 090, Richard C. Kessler Reformation Collection, Archives and Manuscripts Dept., Pitts Theology Library, Emory University. Biographical Note Martin Luther was born in Eisleben, Germany, on 10 November 1483. In 1501 Luther entered the University of Erfurt. He completed his A.B. and M.A. degrees four years later. He unexpectedly entered the local Augustinian monastery on 27 July 1505. On 3 April 1507, Luther was ordained as a priest. At the urging of his superiors Luther decided to continue his education and was awarded a doctorate on 18-19 October 1512. From 1512-1518 Luther was appointed to a chair for Biblical Study at the University of Wittenberg. In 1514, while lecturing on Psalm 71, he discovered his principal of "justification by faith." This new key to the entire Bible became the centerpiece of his new theology. Luther's theology developed quickly, and soon the entire faculty of the university accepted his ideas. By 1517 Wittenberg had become a center of Biblical humanism. Luther's new Christocentric theology soon came into conflict with traditional Roman Catholic theology over the sale of indulgences. On 31 October 1517, Luther posted his Ninety-five Theses on the door of the Castle Church. His intent was to stir academic debate on the subject of indulgences and the position the university should adopt on the matter. The Theses spread rapidly throughout Germany and great numbers of people came to agreed with Luther's views. Indulgence sales dropped severely as a result.

26. Reformation: Martin Luther
Martin Luther (14831546) stands in history as one of those unique forces, an individual who by force of will and by his ideas changed the world fundamentally.
http://www.wsu.edu:8080/~dee/REFORM/LUTHER.HTM
Luther was not a person you would want to have dinner with; he was temperamental, peevish, egomaniacal, and argumentative. But this single-mindedness, this enormous self-confidence and strident belief in the rightness of his arguments, allowed him to stand against opposition, indeed, to harden his position in the face of death by fire, the usual punishment for heretics. Luther became an Augustinian monk in 1505, disappointing his equally strong-willed father, who wished him to become a lawyer. He earned a doctorate in theology from the University of Wittenberg, but instead of settling down to a placid and scholarly monkish life or an uneventful university career teaching theology, he began to develop his own personal theology, which erupted into outright blasphemy when he protested the use of indulgences in his 95 Theses
Luther's first writing was The Sermon on Good Works , in which he argued that good works do not benefit the soul; only faith could do that. Things took a turn for the worse: Pope Leo declared 41 articles of Luther's teachings as heretical teachings, and Luther's books were publicly burned in Rome. Luther became more passionate in his effort to reform the church. His treatise, "Address to the Christian Nobility of Germany," pressed for the German nation to use military means to force the church to discuss grievances and reform; "A Prelude concerning the Babylonish Captivity of the Church" literally called for clergy in the church to openly revolt against Rome.

    Medieval Sourcebook:
    Martin Luther (1483-1546):
On the Jews and Their Lies, 1543
At the beginning of his career it is often said that Luther was apparently sympathetic to Jewish resistance to the Catholic Church. He wrote, early in his career: The Jews are blood-relations of our Lord; if it were proper to boast of flesh and blood, the Jews belong more to Christ than we. I beg, therefore, my dear Papist, if you become tired of abusing me as a heretic, that you begin to revile me as a Jew. However, sometime before 1517, in his Letters to Spalatin , we can already see that Luther's hatred of Jews, best seen in tis 1543 letter, was not some affectation of old age, but was present very early on. Luther expected Jews to convert to his purified Christianity. When they did not, he turned violently against them. It is impossible for modern people to read the horrible passages below and not to think of the burning of synagogues in November 1938 on Krystalnacht . Nor would one wish to excuse Luther for this text. A number of points must, however, be made. The most important concerns the language used. Luther used violent and vulgar language throughout his career: he was not a man to say "manure" when he meant "shit". We do not expect religious figures to use this sort of language in the modern world, but it was not uncommon in the early 16th century. Second, although Luther's comments seem to be proto-Nazi, they are better seen as part of tradition of

    38. Martin Luther (1483-1546)

    http://membres.lycos.fr/ideologues/Luther.html
    Martin Luther

Martin Luther: A Biography of Martin Luther (1483-1546)
Luther was born in Eisleben, Germany, the son of Hans
Luther, who worked in the copper mines, and his wife
Margarethe. He went to school at Magdeburg and Eisenach, and
entered the University of Erfurt in 1501, graduating with a
BA in 1502 and an MA in 1505. His father wished him to be a
lawyer, but Luther was drawn to the study of the scriptures,
and spent three years in the Augustinian monastery at
Erfurt. In 1507 he was ordained a priest, and went to the
University of Wittenberg, where he lectured on philosophy
and the Scriptures, becoming a powerful and influential
preacher. On a mission to Rome in 151011 he was appalled by the corruption he found there. Money was greatly needed at the time for the rebuilding of St. Peter's, and papal emissaries sought everywhere to raise funds by the sale of indulgences. The system was grossly abused, and Luther's indignation at the shameless traffic, carried on in particular by the Dominican Johann Tetzel, became irrepressible. As professor
